WEDNESDAY BLOG - August 7th, 2013

Let’s go to the games.  Josh Harrison’s pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 win over the Marlins.  The Fish miraculously escaped from a bease-loaded, nobody out, situation in the bottom of the eighth inning, but couldn’t take advantage.  The Pirates keep playing good ball, and have won 12 of their last 17 games, while the Marlins have lost three straight and five of their last eight.  Charlie Morton takes the hill for the Pirates tonight, while the Marlins will counter with Tom Koehler.  Game time is 7:05 pm.  Get ready for a matinee tomorrow at 12:35 pm, as Gerrit Cole and Jose Fernandez square off in the series finale.

After tomorrow’s game, the Marlins will head to Atlanta to take on the Braves in a three-game set over the weekend.

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 354 runs in their 110 games.  But, here come the Yankees, as they join the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 43-68 357

Nationals 54-59 416
Yankees 57-55 423

Giants 50-62 426

In contrast, the Boston Red Sox lead the majors with 583 runs in 115 games.  The Detroit Tigers have scored 566 runs in 111 games.

Here are the latest trade rumors around the majors:

Here is ESPN chiming in with their gossip:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Miami product and Oriole third baseman Manny Machado is a
threat to break the all-time major league record for doubles in a season.  Who holds the record?  The answer comes later, alligator.

Here are the up-to-the-minute standings in MLB:

Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:

We still have some residue from the PED baseball story.

Good information in this in-depth article in the NY Daily News on what we can expect in this whole fiasco going forward:

Wallace Matthews of ESPN says Round One went to A-Roid:

Players Union director Michael Weiner told A-Roid that if MLB offered him a lower number of games suspension to take it:

From the peanut gallery, we here from Pete Rose:

We also hear from Mark McGwire:

Our lives would not be complete if we didn’t hear from the still embarrassing, yet very observant, Ozzie Guillen.  Here is his twitter post:

In case you missed it, here is my take:

Alex Rodriguez had an opportunity to come clean, take responsibility for his actions, admit he has been lying since lying to Katie Couric in 2007, since promising to stay clean in 2009, and just move forward.  He swung and missed at that chance.  Instead, he chose to fight and to “respect the process”, not because he is innocent, but because he is looking to reduce the time of the suspension and not lose all that money the rest of this season and next.  It is all about A-Roid and his money.

A-Roid has betrayed the game, the fans, his teammates, his peers, his employers, and even himself.  He hasn’t learned SQUAT from his mistakes and will continue on his little merry-go-round of life in which he is the center of the universe. However, he will not be able to lie to anyone ever again.  Nothing he says will ever be believed or accepted.

I still believe that the best (and only) choice for A-Roid is to come clean, accept a suspension and take his punishment like a man.  This is his opportunity, probably his last opportunity, to do the right thing.

The Biogenesis scandal is not limited to only baseball.  A very large number of athletes from the NBA, boxing, fighting, tennis, college sports, and even high school athletes were regular customers and clients.  Have any of these entities reached out to curtail PED use in their sports?

Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of the PED issues in baseball.  The players and the commissioner need to work out a strict punishment for the offenders.  One strike and you’re out sounds harsh, but maybe that is what the game needs, but with safeguards built in to protect the innocent.  Hit them where it hurts . . . in their wallets.  More and more, the MLB players and their union no longer support the cheaters and they want the game cleaned up, once and for all.  Once MLB implements these punishments and players get the message, then, and only then, will we be able to control the problem at its roots.  PED’s, steroids, etc. are in the hands of high school athletes as their over-zealous parents try to live their lives vicariously through their kids.

Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald takes a look at the problem in South Florida high schools:

The FHSAA is trying to step up and is saying the “right things” in the fight against steroids and PED’s at the high school level.  Unfortunately, they don’t have a clue:

HERE’S AN IDEA FOR ALEX AND THE REST OF THE DIRTY DOZEN WITH A SOUTH FLORIDA CONNECTION:  Why don’t you guys pay for the first couple of years of testing in high schools in South Florida?

In college football news, another pissing contest is brewing, this one between the clowns at the NCAA and the clown-wannabe and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel:

The University of Miami Hurricanes are practicing in preparation for this upcoming season.  Here is today’s Miami Herald daily report:

UM is getting some national attention.  Yahoo!Sports:

Speaking of UM and A-Roid, what’s going to happen to Alex Rodriguez Field?

In Dolphin news, here is Armando Salguero’s daily Dolphin report from the Miami Herald:

More Dolphin stuff, as undrafted players make a push to land a spot on the team:

Some changes in the offense, other news from Dolphins camp, and stuff from behind the peephole from the Herald’s Barry Jackson:

Remember, the Dolphins face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday in their second preseason game.  Game time is 7:30 pm, and you can watch the game on Channel 4 in South Florida.

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with news from all around the league:

We can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

It is official . . . the Miami Heat open defense of their NBA crown on my birthday against the Chicago Bulls

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Miami product and Oriole third baseman Manny Machado is a threat to break the all-time major league record for doubles in a season.  Who holds the record?

You have to set the DeLorean all the way back to 1931 to find Earl Webb, who hit 67 doubles while playing for the Boston Red Sox.  Machado has 40 doubles in his first 113 games this season.  He has a chance, but he has to pick up the pace.  The active player with the most doubles in a season is Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who hit 59 doubles in 2000.
