WEDNESDAY, September 4th, 2013

NOTE:  My fearless predictions and stone-cold lock picks for the NFL season will be here on Thursday’s edition of the blog.

Remember:  I still have some Marlins tickets for you as they take on the Nationals this weekend and the Braves next week.  E-mail me or send me a private message on Facebook.

The Marlins are ON FIRE.  They won their third in a row last night,  beating the Cubs 6-2.  Christian Yelich and Donovan Solano did most of the damage, with three hits each and they each drove in a pair of runs.  The bullpen pitched very well again, with 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief.  The three-game streak is the first such streak since July 31 - August 2.  The teams return to the field this afternoon at 2:20.  Brian Flynn will make his major league debut for the Marlins against Jeff Samardzija.  The Fish will have an off day on Thursday, and return to Miami to take on the Nationals at Marlins Park on Friday.  Jose Fernandez will start on Friday in what will probably be his next to last start of the season.

The Marlins are still the worst offensive team in the majors.  This is the sorry reality:  The Marlins have now been held to three runs or less 87 times this season, and their record in those 87 games is 17-70. Taking it one step further,

When scoring three runs in a game   - 6-16
When scoring two runs in a game - 9-17
When scoring one run in a game - 2-21

Of course, they lead the majors in getting shutout, having been blanked 16 times so far this season. Ouch.

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 441 runs in their 137 games, an underwhelming 3.21 runs per game.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 52-85 441
White Sox 56-81 518
Giants 61-77 519
Phillies 63-76 526
Padres 62-76 527

In contrast, the Detroit Tigers (81-58) lead MLB with 703 runs scored and the Boston Red Sox (83-57) have plated 700.  The Sox have played 1 more game than the Tigers.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Nationals 9 Phillies 6
Wilson Ramos blasted a three-run homer and finished with four RBI.

Braves 13 Mets 5
Andrellton Simmons two-run homer in the seventh inning was the difference.  Evan Gattis went 3-3 and also connected long distance.  The Braves have won eight out of nine and their magic number is down to 10 games.

Reds 1 Cardinals 0
Rookie Billy Hamilton scored the only run of the game for the Reds.  Homer Bailey got the win, Aroldis Chapman finished up to record the save.

Pirates 4 Brewers 3
Travis Snider homered in the ninth inning.  Andrew McCutchen also connected long distance, the 100th homer of his career. The win for the Pirates was #81 this season, their first non-losing season since 1992.

Dodgers 7 Rockies 4
Carl Crawford went 3-5 with two RBI and Ricky Nolasco won his sixth decision in his last seven starts.

Padres 3 Giants 2
Chris Denorfia drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

Blue Jays 10 D-Backs 4
Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Rajai Davis and Moises Sierra all connected long distance for the Jays.

Over in the American League,

Red Sox 2 Tigers 1
Great pitching duel between Jon Lester and Max Scherzer.  Lester got the better of it last night, going seven innings and striking out nine.

Yankees 6 White Sox 4
Eduardo Nuñez drove in two runs with a double as the Yankees scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal one from the Sox.  The Yankees are now 2 1/2 games behind the Rays for the second wild card spot in the AL.

Indians 4 Orioles 3
Ubaldo Jimenez threw six shutout innings and Asdrubal Cabrera and Yan Gomes each drove in two runs.

Royals 4 Mariners 3
Salvador Perez drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Mike Moustakas, who had doubled.  Perez and Alex Gordon connected long distance.

Twins 9 Astros 6 (12 innings)
Darin Mastroianni hit a two-run double in a three-run twelfth inning.

Rangers 5 A’s 1
Martin Perez notched his sixth straight start.  The Rangers moved back into first place in the AL West.

Rays 7 Angels 1
Matt Moore returned from the injured list to win his first start in more than a month.  Desmond Jennings and Yunel Escobar hit solo homers in the win.
