Monday, Monday!  Time to get started on  a brand new week.

Here’s the blog.

Lots of stuff going on - the major league trading deadline, the Dolphins and the NFL open their training camps, with the first preseason games for the Fins coming up on August 8th.

Speaking of the NFL, I will have my first analysis on all the teams later this week, as I take a look at the NFC, followed by the AFC next week.  Keep your eyes out for that.

In the NBA, LeBron James will wear #23 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Of course, all the idiots that burned his old #23 jerseys when LBJ brought his talents to South Beach, will just have to go out and buy another one before he leaves again and they have to burn them again.

Here is more on the Heat from Ira Winderman’s blog in the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

It’s all over but the shouting in Donald Sterling’s trial to determine whether or not his wife can sell the LA Clippers for $2 Billion.

What about Michael Beasley and Greg Oden?

Off to the diamonds we go:

The Hall of Fame in Cooperstown welcomed six new members on Sunday - Managers Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa, and Joe Torre; pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine; and slugger Frank Thomas.

There should be another big class of inductees in 2015.  Among the players that are eligible for induction next year (in alphabetical order):

Jeff Bagwell
Craig Biggio
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Randy Johnson
Edgar Martinez
Pedro Martinez
Fred McGriff
Mark McGwire
Mike Mussina
Rafael Palmeiro
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Gary Sheffield
John Smoltz
Sammy Sosa

You will notice that this list includes some guys with steroid implications, whether assumed or real (in italics above).  If the hall just inducted Tony LaRussa, who turned a blind eye to McGwire, Canseco, and others while in Oakland, then maybe it is time to let in these guys in as well.  I’m just saying . . . .

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Only three left-handers in MLB history ended their careers with more wins than Tom Glavine, who entered the Hall of Fame on Sunday with 305 wins.  Who are they?  The answer comes later, alligator.

The Marlins enjoyed the best road trip in the history of the franchise, as they took 6 out of 7 - - - - 3 out of 4 against the Braves, and sweeping the Astros in a 3 game series.  That is as good as it gets.  The Fish are now 51-53 for the season, and find themselves in third place in the NL east, seven games behind the Washington Nats, who lead the second-place Atlanta Braves by 1 ½ games.  Miami is 5 ½ games behind the Braves, both in the division and in the race for the second wild card, but the Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds are all in front of the Marlins in the wild card standings as well.

One thing at a time.  The Nationals are in town starting a three-game series against the Fish at Marlins Park today.  Next up will be the Cincinnati Reds for a four-game series this coming weekend.  These two series are pivotal if the Marlins are going to remain in the post-season chase.  You gotta beat the teams in front of you, it is that simple.  Here are the probable pitchers for the series against the Nationals and the first two games against the Red Stockings:

Mon 7:10 pm Jordan Zimmerman vs Nathan Eovaldi
Tue 7:10 pm Stephen Strasburg vs Henderson Alvarez
Wed  12:40 pm Tanner Roark vs Brad Hand

Thu 7:10 pm Johnny Cueto vs Tom Koehler
Fri 7:10 pm Mat Latos vs Jacob Turner

In my preseason analysis of the Marlins, I told you that this team was going to be better than last year, and that was counting on a full year from Jose Fernandez.  Even with the loss of Jose for virtually the entire season, the fact that this team is right around the .500 mark at the trade deadline is definitely a HUGE improvement.  Remember that the Fish were 62-100 in 2013.

The starting pitching needs to continue to improve, the bullpen needs to step it up a notch, and they need to plug that hole at second base.  We’ll see if GM Dan Jennings is able to pull the trigger on a trade this week.  Will they bring a starting pitcher in?  Will it be a veteran bat?  Second baseman?  I’ll keep you posted.

Let us move on to the Miami Dolphins and the NFL.

Training camp is open.

The Dolphins are making a lot of changes this season.  I sincerely hope that the “new and improved” offensive line lives up to that mantra.  The “new and improved” offense must include more connections between Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace, something that didn’t happen very much last season.  The addition of Knowshown Moreno to what has been a mediocre running back combination of Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas must make an impact.  Hopefully we’ll start seeing that when the preseason games start on August 8th, in less than two weeks.

On a side note, I still have high hopes for Lamar Miller, especially in this “new and improved” offense being implemented by new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.  You may also want to keep your eyes on rookie wide receiver Jarvis Landry, the second round pick from LSU.

Monday, July 14, 2014

Monday has arrived! Let's get ready for a brand new week.

Here’s the blog.

Let's start it off today with the NBA and the Miami Heat:

Lebron is gone.  Back to Cleveland.  The people that live in the “Mistake by the Lake” are headed back to the stores to buy the LeBron jerseys so they can replace the ones they burned four years ago.  Rocket scientists, they're not.

What are they going to do if LeBron chooses to use his opt-out clause after ONE season?  This will be interesting to watch, to say the least.

The Heat and “The Godfather”, Pat Riley, are not standing still.  They re-signed Chris Bosh, Chris “The Birdman” Andersen, Mario Chalmers, Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem are on their way back, and replaced LBJ with at small forward with Luol Deng.  Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger are also already in the fold.

Watch for the possibility of yet another move(s):

Power forward Carlos Boozer, who may be amnestied by the Chicago Bulls.  The Chicago Bulls have until Wednesday to finalize Boozer’s status, as they need his $17 million off their payroll to sign Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic).

Other possibilities include veteran point guard Jameer Nelson and small forward Caron Butler.

Could the end of Norris Cole’s career with the Heat by near?

What about Ray Allen?  He’s still wavering on whether or not to retire, joining LBJ in Cleveland, or coming back to the 305.

My take remains the same on LeBron:  I still wouldn't have left Miami now to go and experiment with the Cavaliers.  Don't be fooled into thinking that Kyrie Irving is a stud guard.  He is one of the worst, if not the worst, defenders at his position.  Going back to Cleveland is the equivalent of going back to your lunatic ex-wife or ex-girlfriend after the inevitable ugly break-up.  Have LeBron and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert kissed and made up?  LeBron will try to be the GM in Cleveland, as well as trying to coach the team.  We’ll see how Cavs management and their new head coach, who has coached as many NBA games as I have, reacts and handles the large ego that comes in the same luggage with all the talent that is LBJ.  A plus for LeBron is that, in leaving Miami, and going home to Cleveland, he is no longer under the intense pressure of winning it all every year.  Anything less than a championship in Miami was still borderline failure.

Also remember: Cleveland is still Cleveland; Miami is still Miami.

As a Miami Heat fan, I am very thankful for the last four years of Heat success and domination, and what LeBron and the “Big Three” gave us.  Four trips to the finals and two championships are nothing to sneeze at.

This franchise is much more than just LBJ.  They did manage to win a championship in 2006 before the “Big Three” era.  Pat Riley is a magician, and the ability of Heat GM Andy Elisburg to put the numbers together and make this work.  The guy is a numbers-crunching genius.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  On Sunday, the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner became only the second pitcher to hit two grand slam home runs in the same season.  Who was the first?  The answer comes later, alligator.

The Fish ended the "first half" losing five out of six games, including an embarrassing three-game sweep at the hands of the Metropolitans in New York.  The Fish fell to fourth place in the NL East, and are 7 ½ games out of first.

The Marlins will be back in action on Friday, at Marlins Park, when they open a three-game weekend series against the San Francisco Giants.

According to Marlins GM Michael Hill, the Fish are looking to add a veteran starting pitcher to the rotation:

The Minor Leagues had their moment in the spotlight on Sunday, as the US took on the world in the Futures game in Minneapolis.

The Atlanta Braves suspended Dan Uggla on Sunday for one game.  Manager Fredi Gonzalez said it was an “internal matter” and there would be nothing further said on the issue.  Could the 34-year old second baseman be on his way out in Atlanta?  Is Miami in his future?

The All-Star game will probably be Derek Jeter’s last chance to say goodbye on a national stage.

From the NY Dailey News, here is video from Jeter’s first all-star game, way back in 1998.

Four pitchers added to the NL All Star team on Sunday, after the Marlins’ Henderson Alvarez was added on Saturday.

TGIF.

Here’s the blog.

Let's start it off today with the NBA and the Miami Heat:

What’s the latest with the Heat and LeBron James?

The sport pages and the internet are abuzz with speculation (remember, that is all it is . . . speculation) about what LeBron James is going to do.  Sources, whether reliable or not, are saying that a decision will be forthcoming on Saturday.  Stay tuned.

Most pundits, experts, and “reliable” sources have narrowed it down to Miami and Cleveland.  As an interested observer and “unreliable” source and pundit, I have this to say:

I’m going to stick to my original prediction that LeBron, D-Wade, and Chris Bosh will all be back.  Bringing back “The Big Three” (plus Jesus Shuttleworth) is still a no-brainer for the Heat.

What about LeBron?  What should he do?  What would I do?

Going back to Cleveland would be the equivalent of going back to your lunatic ex-wife or ex-girlfriend after the inevitable ugly break-up.  Trust me . . . that doesn't work.

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert went totally berserk when LeBron left Cleveland to “bring his talents to South Beach”.  This guy, who was the founder of Quicken Loans, is a brilliant businessman, but didn't behave like one at that time.  Not only did he act like a jilted lover and a spoiled brat who didn't get his way, but he took it one step further and accused LBJ of “tanking” it on the court in the playoffs.  That is totally unacceptable and shouldn't be forgotten or forgiven by LBJ.

If I were in LeBron’s shoes, I would re-sign with the Heat, albeit for two or three years max.  I would remain in a situation where I can continue to be in a position to win NOW, while keeping my options open two or three years down the road.  I must repeat that LeBron has not contacted me for advice, so this is just pure speculation on my part, as well.  However, in reality, this “Big 3” is at the peak of their level, and we must accept the fact that D-Wade is not what he once was and his game is probably on a downward trend.

We also need to realize that the Cleveland Cavs will be a very talented team and a legitimate force to be reckoned with two or three years down the road, and LeBron would be the guy to take them over the hump and lead them to a possible NBA Championship.

Another guy that is not calling me for advice is Pat RIley.  I have nothing to say that could possibly help the brightest and smartest guy in the NBA make the right moves, but I would probably be hedging my bet and convincing Chris Bosh to return to Miami, regardless of what LBJ does.

Here is more from Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

The Herald is all over this as well:

The Heat is participating in the NBA’s Pro Summer League in Orlando, and rookie point guard Shabazz Napier is in the middle of the action.  You may also want to keep your eye on James Ennis, last year’s second round draft pick.

Off to the diamonds we go:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  A consecutive scoreless-inning streak by Clayton Kershaw came to an end last night at 41.  Who holds the current major league record of consecutive scoreless innings and whose record did that player break?  The answer comes later, alligator.

The Marlins take their road show to the Big Apple, for a three-game set this weekend in New York against the Metropolitans.  The Fish come into this series with a 44-47 record, 5 ½ games behind the Nats and the Braves, who are tied for first place in the NL East.  It would be real sweet if the Fish can sweep this series with the Mets and take their record to .500, as we hit the  All Star break.  The Marlins return to the diamond on Friday, and they will be at Marlins Park to take on the San Francisco Giants for a weekend series July 18-20.

Here are the pitching match ups for the series with Metropolitans:

Friday           Henderson Alvarez vs Zack Wheeler        7:10 pm
Saturday         Tom Koehler vs Daisuke Matsuzak            4:10 pm
Sunday      Brad Hand vs Jacob deGrom   1:10 pm

While everyone is talking about Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGahee (and deservedly so), let’s not forget about Marcel Ozuna:

Regarding Ozuna, is it just me or shouldn’t he be playing in left field instead of center field?

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  A consecutive scoreless-inning streak by Clayton Kershaw came to an end last night at 41.  Who holds the current major league record of consecutive scoreless innings and whose record did that player break?

Both are former Dodgers.  The record is currently held by Orel Hershiser, at 59.  The former record belonged to Don Drysdale, who threw 58 consecutive shutout innings.
