Make that 27 consecutive wins for the Miami Heat, as they took the Magic out of Orlando 108-94.  Playing without Dwyane Wade, still out with a sore knee, Miami got 24 points, 11 assists, and 9 rebounds from LeBron James.  This game was close, in fact, it was tied at 68-68 with just under 3 minutes left in the third quarter.  A LeBron monster dunk propelled the Heat on a 20-2 run, and that was the end of that. This streak is now the second-longest win in US major professional sports history, behind only the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who sit at 33 consecutive wins. The team is now in Chicago, where they will play the Bulls tomorrow night, then they will head to New Orleans for an encounter with the Hornets Friday night.  On Sunday, they will face what will probably be the biggest hurdle on the way to catching the Laker’s 33-game winning streak, when they face the Spurs in San Antonio.  Tonight’s game is first, and it tips off at 7:00 pm on Sun Sports and NBA-TV at 7:00 pm.  One more time: The Heat need to stay alert and keep their guard up, because long winning streaks have a tendency to come to an end against teams that you normally wouldn’t and shouldn’t lose to.  That being said, if they get past the Spurs next Sunday, I feel they will end up setting a new record for consecutive wins.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Heat’s streak is now the second longest in US professional major pro sports, behind only the LA Lakers 33-game winning streak in 1971-72.  Do you know who owns the longest winning streaks in MLB, the NFL, and the NHL?   Tell you later, alligator.

In the NBA yesterday,

Indiana 100 Atlanta 94
Gerald Green led six Pacers in double-figures with 19 points.  Roy Hibbert scored 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Washington 107 Memphis 94
John Wall had the game of his life, finishing with 47 points, eight assists, and 7 rebounds.

New Orleans 110 Denver 86
Ryan Anderson led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds as the Hornets put an end to Denver’s 15-game winning streak.

Utah 107 Philadelphia 91
Randy Foye and Gordon Hayward led a balanced Utah attack with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Golden State 109    LA Lakers 103
Stephen Curry scored 25 points and dished out 10 assists.  Kobe Bryant scored 36 in the loss for the Lakers, who have lost three in a row.

Eric Adelson of Yahoo! Sports tries to answer the question, “WHO IS FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY?”

The Palm Beach Post also takes a stab at the answer:

In exhibition baseball, the Detroit Tigers beat the Marlins yesterday, 6-3.  Marlins starter Wade LeBlanc got in trouble early, giving up 3 runs in the first inning.  He pitched a total of five innings, allowing a total of four runs.  Rob Brantly homered for the Marlins, Adeiny Hechavarria had a run-scoring triple.  For the Tigers, Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer while Alex Avila and Miguel Cabrera drove in runs as well.  Today, the Fish take on the Nationals in Jupiter, starting at 1:05 pm.  Henderson Alvarez will start for the Marlins, Dan Haren will open on the hill for the Nats.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed free agent pitcher Kyle Loehse to a 3-year, $33 million deal.  All the guy did last year was go 16-3, with a 2.86 ERA.  What took everybody so long?  Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports is all over it:

The Yankees have traded for outfielder Vernon Wells, pending league approval and a physcal.  The New York Post’s George King reports on why this deal makes sense for the Bombers:

In Miami Dolphin news, the Dolphins are offering to repay Miami-Dade County for their share of the costs of rebuilding the Seven Names Stadium, plus millions of dollars in penalties should the team fail to bring major events to South Florida, including four Super Bowls over the next 3 decades.  Here’s the complete report in the Miami Herald:

MLB - the New York Giants won 26 straight games in 1916

NFL - the New England Patriots won 21 consecutive games in 2003 and 2004.

NHL - the Pittsburgh Penguins won 17 games in a row back in 1993.  The Pens are on another streak right now, with 12 victories in a row.

The consecutive game winning streak is now at 26, after the Miami Heat took care of business this weekend, first beating the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, 103-89, and crushing the Charlotte Bobcats yesterday, 109-77.  LeBron James led the Heat in scoring both games, hitting for 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists on Friday, and then just falling short of a triple-double yesterday, as he finished with 32 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds.  Chris Bosh and Norris Cole added 15 points each in yesterday’s win.  Heat coach Erik Spolstra decided to give Dwyane Wade the night off after he complained of knee soreness before the game, something that the team medical staff considered minor.  The team was definitely ready for a couple of easy games this weekend.  The team hits the road this week, starting tonight in Orlando, against the Magic.  Remember thatthe Magics have given Miami fits this season.  After tonight’s game, they head for Chicago to face the Bulls on Wednesday, then to New Orleans for an encounter with the Hornets Friday night. I’ll repeat what I’ve been saying:  The Heat need to stay alert and keep their guard up, because long winning streaks have a tendency to come to an end against teams that you normally wouldn’t and shouldn’t lose to.  That being said, if they get past the Spurs next Sunday, I feel they will set a new record for consecutive wins.

In the NBA yesterday,

Atlanta 104 Milwaukee 99
Al Horford scored 24 points, Josh Smith finished with 23.

Houston 96 San Antonio 95
James Harden finished with 29 points, including the game-winning basket with 4.5 seconds left in the contest.
Oklahoma City 103 Portland 83
Kevin Durant scored 24 points, Russell Westbrook had 21 points.
Chicago 104 Minnesota 97
Nate Robinson led the way with 22 points and 10 assists, Carlos Boozer chipped in with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Dallas 113  Utah 108
Mike James scored a team-high 19 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 17 points in the win.

Brooklyn 102 Phoenix 100
Brook Lopez scored 21 points, Deron Williams had 20 points and 11 assists.

Philadelphia 117 Sacramento 103
Jrue Holiday had 21 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.  Dorell Wright scored 22 points to lead the Sixers to a rare road win.

In college hoops, the NCAA tournament is down to the sweet sixteen, and if you have a perfect bracket, you are either lying or you picked the games at random from out of a hat.  In the West Regional, we have the #2 Ohio State, #6 Arizona, #9 Wichita State, and #13 La Salle advancing.  In the Midwest, #1 Louisville, #2 Duke, #3 Michigan State, and #12 Oregon keep on dancing.  In the South Regional, #1 Kansas, #3 Florida, #4 Michigan, and #15 Florida Gulf Coast move on.  The Eastern Regional is the only one that came out as it was seeded, with #1 Indiana, #2 Miami, #3 Marquette, and #4 Syracuse all advancing to the round of sixteen.  My bracket is pretty much a distant memory.  I must say, however, it has been an exciting and very interesting tournament so far.

The Sweet Sixteen match-ups are as follow:

THURSDAY’S GAMES (March 28):

West Regional

Ole Miss vs Wichita State

Arizona vs Ohio State

Southeast Regional

Indiana vs Syracuse

Miami vs Marquette

FRIDAY’S GAMES (March 29)

South Regional

Kansas vs Michigan

Midwest Regional

Louisville vs Oregon

Duke vs Michigan

In exhibition baseball, the Marlins lost to the Houston Astros yesterday, 4-1, in a rain-shortened affair.  More importantly, Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner got rocked again, giving up 4 runs in 4 2/3 innings before the rains started.  At this point, it is very probable that the 21-year-old Turner will not be in the Marlins‘ starting rotation when the season opens.  The Fish host the Detroit Tigers this afternoon in Jupiter.  Wade LeBlanc will toe the rubber for the Marlins, while Rick Porcello will take the hill for the Tigers.  Game time this afternoon is 1:05 pm, and you can watch it on MLB.TV.

Great article in the April 1 issue of ESPN The Magazine.  Take the time to read it to get some real insight into Miguel Cabrera:

ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark talked to Jimmy Rollins, who wants the World Baseball Classic to be played every two years, instead of every four.  I TOTALLY AGREE.  Here’s Stark’s conversation with Rollins:

In Atlanta Braves news, I recently told you to look out for this name:  Evan Gattis.  David O’Brien from the Journal-Constitution fills us in:

The Yankees are in the process of adding some much needed help, as they are putting the finishing touches on a trade with the Angels for outfielder Vernon Wells.  The trade is still not complete, but it should be a done deal later today. Here are all the details from ESPNnewyork.com:

ESPN.com is reporting that Derek Jeter will definitely begin the regular season on the disabled list:

If that wasn’t enough, George King of the New York Post is concerned that Mariano Rivera’s headaches in recent weeks, have been severe migraines.  Here is his report:

In NFL news, the Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Elvis Dumervil.  There is no truth to the rumor that Broncos president John Elway has destroyed all the fax machines in their offices. ESPN.com has the full story:

In college baseball, FIU lost two out of three over the weekend to Western Kentucky, only managing to win yesterday’s game, 5-2.  The Panthers will take on Arkansas State in a three-game series beginning on Friday.  Meanwhile, over in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes fared much better, taking 2 out of 3 against Virginia Tech.  Miami will host Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, before heading to Charlottesville to take on the Virginia Cavaliers in a three-game weekend series.

After consecutive games in which they had to overcome a seventeen point deficit against the Boston Celtics on Monday, and then a 27 point deficit against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, the Miami Heat are probably in the mood for a couple of easier games this weekend.  They look for consecutive victory #25 tonight when they take on the Detroit Pistons at the AAA at 7:30, and you can watch the game on Sun Sports.  The Heat have beaten Detroit four consecutive times here at home, but lost to the Pistons in Detroit back on the 28th of December, 109-99, in a game in which the Heat were playing without Dwyane Wade, who was serving a one-game suspension.  However, Detroit is going through a rough patch right now, having lost their nine games in the month of March, and by an average of 18 points.  On Sunday, Miami welcomes the Charlotte Bobcats to the AAA, game time at 6:00 pm.  The team will again hit the road next week for games at Orlando on Monday, Chicago on Wednesday, and New Orleans on Friday.  Most probably, their biggest challenge in breaking the Lakers’ record of 33 straight wins will be next Sunday, when they visit the Spurs in San Antonio.

ESPNLosAngeles.com caught up with the man on the NBA logo, all-time Laker great Jerry West, and West talked about the Laker streak and the Heat:

In the NBA yesterday,

Portland 99 Chicago 89
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points and Damian Lillard had 24 points in the Portland win.

Denver 101 Philadelphia 100
Do the Nuggets think they’re the Heat?  Corey Brewer scored six points in the final nine seconds of the game as Denver overcame a five-point deficit in the last 14 seconds to win their 14th consecutive game.

Sacramento 101 Minnesota 98
Isiah Thomas had 24 points and six assists.  Tyreke Evans added 21 points, and DeMarcus Cousins finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Utah @ San Antonio 8:30 pm

If the NBA playoffs started today, the match-ups would be:

Miami vs Milwaukee San Antonio vs LA Lakers
Indiana vs Boston Oklahoma City vs Houston
New York vs Chicago  Memphis vs Golden State
Brooklyn vs Atlanta LA Clippers vs Denver

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The University of Miami basketball hopes to start a very successful run in this year’s NCAA tournament, as they take on Pacific at 2:10 pm on TNT.  After winning the ACC crown, Miami is expected by many of the experts around the country to at least reach the elite eight. (In my bracket selection, I have them beating Florida in the Final Four and reaching the Championship game).  Have the Canes ever even been in the NCAA tournament? Tell you later, alligator.

Here are my bracket selections for the tournament:

In exhibition baseball, the Marlins were off yesterday.  The Fish are back in action today at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, to take on the New York Metropolitans.  Henderson Alvarez will start for the Marlins, his first pitch will be at 7:05 pm.  Joe Frisaro, who covers the Marlins for MLB.com, has some thoughts on who is going to hit cleanup behind the Man-Child, Giancarlo Stanton.

The Canes reached the Sweet Sixteen back in 2000, but have advanced past their first game only three times in six appearances in the big dance, and they have an all-time record in the tournament of 4-6.  Head Coach Jim Larranaga took his George Mason team to the final four in 2006.
