Quick one today - before we go to the baseball playoffs, there was a huge gasp from the AAA last night when Dwayne Wade had to leave the first preseason game of the year with a hamstring injury. All indications are that he will be OK and ready to return in a couple of weeks after rest and rehab. The other two thirds of the "Tres Reyes Magos" (The Three Kings) looked really good.
Baseball playoffs begin today. Here are my picks:
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays
Contrary to popular belief, I'm going with the Rangers. Starting pitching is solid and their bullpen is downright nasty. Oh, and they can hit. Josh Hamilton may be the MVP this year and the rest of that lineup is very, very good. The Rays offense has shown a tendency to disappear for stretches at a time and a short series is not the time to do that.
New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins
The Yankees have issues with their starting pitchers, and there have been indications that Mariano Rivera is maybe beginning to show his age. They can still beat the life out of other teams with that lineup. Their weakest link this year has been Derek Jeter, and we all know what what Jeter does in the playoffs year in and year out. CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, and Phillip Hughes have to come through. Jorge Posada needs to get healthy, luckily the Twins have shown no indication that they can put pressure on other teams on the basepaths. For the Twins, this may be the time that they really miss Justin Morneau and Joe Nathan. I'm going with the Yankees in this series.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies
"H2O" - Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Roy Oswalt. In a short series, those three names should bring nothing but fear into the minds of opposing teams. Tough nut to crack for the Reds. Cincinnati has a chance, albeit a small one.....Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, and Brandon Phillips have to produce runs and the starters need to keep them in games for their bullpen to be a factor. Can't wait to see Aroldis Chapman and his 100+ MPH fastball on this stage and see him face Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Raul Ibañez. Still gotta like the Phillies in this one.
Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants
Gonna go with my heart and a hunch and pick the Braves. The Giants can throw Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez at you and that is just as scary as the Philly rotation. Brian Wilson is a great closer, and the rest of their bullpen has been outstanding. The Giants hitting can disappear every so often, and in a short series that may be costly. The Braves starting pitching, with a rotation of Derek Lowe, Tommy Hanson, and Tim Hudson is very solid and Lowe and Hudson are creators of slumps. The band-aid lineup that Braves manager Bobby Cox is forced to play with is missing Martin Prado and Chipper Jones. Their defense was horrendous, probably on a par with the Marlins, during most of the season, but Derek Lee at first base makes a HUGE difference. Again, gonna go with a hunch and pick the Braves in this one.

Un blog breve hoy - antes de irme para los playoffs del beisbol, ayer se escucho un grito de panico en el AAA cuando Dwayne Wade tuvo que salir del primer juego de exhibicion de los Miami Heat anoche con una lesion en el tendon de la corva (hamstring). Todas las indicaciones son de que la lesion no tiene mucha importancia y D-Wade estara listo para regresar des pues de un par de semanas de descanso y rehabilitacion. El resto de los tres Reyes Magos, LeBron James y Chris Bosh, lucieron muy bien.

LIGA AMERICANA

Jorge Posada tiene que regresar 100% fisicamente, y por suerte para el, los Twins no son un equipo que le pone presion a los contrarios corriendo las bases. Este puede ser el momento que los Twins empiezan a extrañar a Justin Morneau y a Joe Nathan. Me voy con los Yankees.

Su defensa fue mediocre por la gran parte de la temporada, pero al agregar a Derek Lee en primera base, resolvieron muchos problemas. Me voy con mi corazonada y me voy con los Bravos.

Sports Jam Session 9/27/10 - Descarga Deportiva 9/27/10
A loss is a loss, but a loss against the Jets is a little harder to swallow. Saw some good things last night, but some others....not so good.
Chad Henne and Brandon Marshall are an electric combination. Marshall doesn't seem fazed at all by wearing Ted Ginn Jr.'s number 19. Ten catches for 166 yards against against the Jets works for me. They still have to find a way to get the ball to a tight end in the middle of the field so the safeties have something to think about. The Fins really should not be adamant about ramming the wildcat down our throats. If you're going to use it, please get Henne off the field. The QB lined up wide doesn't really create any sort of matchup issues. On the defensive side of the ball, Jason Allen was victimized last night, but the Jets scheme had a lot to do with that. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan needs to get his linebackers involved in the pass rush. The LB's produced no sacks last night, and they definitely were abused in pass coverage by Keller and Tomlinson. Our special teams were HORRENDOUS! Bottom line, the Jets were the better team last night. Period, end of story. Buckle up and get ready for MNF against Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and the rest of the Patriots, Bill Bellichick's defense looked very ordinary against a very ordinary Buffalo Bills offense this week.
On a side note, I really couldn't care less if the fans booed Jason Taylor or not. Not an issue.
On my picks this week, I am 3-2, nailing the Colts, Cowboys, and Eagles games, while missing the boat on the Dolphins and the 49ers. For tonight's edition of MNF, I took the Packers minus 2 1/2. For the season so far, I am 11-6, pending tonight's game. Speaking of point spreads and predictions, this week the FIU Golden Panthers will visit the Pitt Panthers. For some reason, Pitt is favored by anywhere from 19 1/2 to 21 1/2 points. If I was a betting man (which I am not), I would jump all over this game. Take FIU and the points. This is the week that FIU breaks into the WIN column. Staying with college football, the Canes take their road show to Clemson this saturday to face the Tigers. I am still not sold on this team, and I believe this game will tell us what to expect the rest of the year. I like the Canes a little bit in this game, especially since the game is at 12 noon. Believe me, it is not easy playing at Clemson, much less in a night game when the natives tend to really get rowdy. Nick Satan and the Alabama Crimson Tide are favored by 9 over the #7 Florida Gators. The only reason I am leaning towards Alabama in this one is because they are at home. The Tide looked beatable on Saturday, and Florida may be peaking just in time for this SEC showdown.
The Heat open up their training camp today in military bases up in the Florida panhandle. Get ready to read and hear what will seemingly will be endless stories about chemistry, cohesion, egos, and mental toughness. Just circle October 26th on your calendars for the opening game against the old "Big 3" plus some guy named Shaq.

Wilson, and Colby Lewis and the Rangers in the opening round. In the National league, the Giants begin the week with a half game lead over the Padres in the West, and the Padres have a half game lead over the Braves in the Wild Card race. The Braves open up a three game series at home tonight against the Marlins, before finishing up against the Phillies, who are already in. The Giants are also at home all week, with four games against the Diamondbacks, and a three game series hosting the Padres. San Diego is at home for four games against the Cubs, before heading to the city by the bay.
Do I need to get concerned about Mariano Rivera's troubles. The best closer in the game has looked like anything but the past few weeks. He has blown three of his last six save opportunities and has seen his ERA skyrocket from 1.03 to 1.85 since September 10. Maybe we're just spoiled, but the fact that Mo will turn 41 in November is raising a warning flag. I'm gonna go out on a limb . . . don't worry, be happy. It'll be OK.
One last thing. Good to see that Tutico Zabala will again be promoting fights at the Miccosukee Resort, after a four-month absence. Next card will take place October 22nd. Try and get out there if you can.

Una derrota es una derrota, pero una derrota contra los Jets no es facil de aceptar. Vi algunas cosas positivas en el juego de los Dolphins anoche, pero otras cosas....no muy buenas.
Chad Henne y Brandon Marshall son una combinacion tremenda. Marshall no ha sido afectado por vestir su camiseta con el numero 19 que pertenecia a Ted Ginn Jr. No se parecen en nada. Diez recepciones para 166 yardas contra una buena defensiva de los Jets me gusta. Los Fins tienen que buscar la forma de hacerle llegar la bola al tight end por el medio del terreno con mas consistencia, para darle a los safeties mas preocupaciones. Tambien no debian de ser tan cabezones y forzar el "wildcat". Si van a utilizarlo, por favor no tengan Chad Henne en el terreno alineado como recibidor. Eso no le mete miedo a nadie ni crea ningun tipo de problema para la defensa contraria. En el lado defensivo del terreno, Jason Allen lucio mal contra los Jets, pero la esquema que usaron los Jets tuvo que ver mucho con eso. El coordinador defensivo Mike Nolan tiene que asegurarse que los linebackers se conviertan en un factor, especialmente poniendole presion al QB. Los linebackers no registraron ni un sack anoche, y en la cobertura fueron victimas de Dustin Keller and LaDanian Tomlinson. Los equipos especiales fueron HORRIBLES! En el analisis final, los Jets fueron mejores que los Dolphins anoche. Punto y aparte. Esta noche, los Packers contra los Bears en la edicion semanal de MNF. Me voy con los Packers menos 2 1/2. Esta temporada, estoy 11-6, pendiente el resultado de esta noche. Hablando de predicciones, esta proximo sabado, los Golden Panthers de FIU visitan a los Panthers de la universidad de Pittsburgh. Por alguna razon, Pittsburgh es favorito por entre 19 1/2 y 21 1/2 puntos sobre la universidad de Westchester. Si yo fuera un apostador (no lo soy), me fuera con FIU y los puntos. Esta es la semana que FIU gana su primer juego de la temporada. La unica razon que me gusta Alabama un poco en este juego, es que estan en casa. Alabama paso trabajo el sabado, y la Florida lucio muy bien. Pudiera haber sorpresa en este encuentro de la SEC.
Los Miami Heat abren su campo de entrenamiento en unas bases militares en el norte de la Florida. Preparense para leer y oir un sin fin de reportajes hablando de "quimica", "acoplarse", "egos", y "fuerza mental". No se preocupen mucho, y marquen sus calendarios para el dia 26 de octubre cuando los "tres reyes magos" abren la temporada regular contra los antiguos "3 grandes", y un personaje llamado Shaq.
La ultima semana de la temporada regular en la pelota de las grandes ligas no nos trae nada para pensar en la liga americana, mientras que en la liga nacional hay mucho que ver. Los Yankees y el Tampa van a avanzar a la post temporada, pero esta por decidirse quien gana la division y quien va de wildcard. Mucha gente piensa que el wildcard es el camino mas facil, ya que se enfrentarian a los Twins de Minnesota. Nadie quiere ver a los Texas Rangers en la primera ronda de playoffs, especialmente con una rotacion de abridores bien descansada, con Cliff Lee, C. J. Wilson, y Colby Lewis. En la liga nacional, los Gigantes de San Francisco abren esta semana en primer lugar en la division del oeste, con medio juego de ventaja sobre el San Diego. Los Padres tienen medio juego de ventaja sobre los Bravos en el wildcard. Los Bravos abren una serie de tres juegos esta noche con los Marlins, antes de terminar contra los Phillies, que ya son los campeones del este. Piensan ustedes que me tengo que preocupar por los problemas de Mariano Rivera? El mejor cerrador en el beisbol no ha lucido bien las ultimas semanas. Ha desperdiciado 3 de sus ultimas 6 oportunidades de salvar juego, y su ERA ha subido de 1.03 a 1.85 desde el dia 10 de septiembre. Entiendo que estamos bien malcriados con Mariano, pero la realidad es que Mariano cumple 41 años de edad en noviembre. Voy a arriesgarme un poco . . . no tenemos razon para preocuparnos. Todo va a estar bien.
Para cerrar, me alegra mucho ver que Tutico Zabala regresa con sus carteleras boxisticas en el Miccosukee, despues de una ausencia de cuatro meses. La proxima cartelera sera el dia 22 de octubre. Traten de ir. Creanme, que lo van a disfrutar.

Tomorrow will be another day, and in the meantime, try and stay out of trouble.
Comprendo que son solamente dos juegos, pero los Miami Dolphins estan demonstrando que han dado un paso adelante esta temporada. Dos victorias cerradas, pero dos victorias, y estan solitos en primer lugar en la divisio del este. La defensa esta jugando muy bien, y vemos lo que adquisiciones clave, como Karlos Dansby, traen a un equipo. Vamos a no ponerlos en el Super Bowl todavia, y ganenle a los odiados New York Jets el domingo por la noche.
Siguiendo en la NFL, los Houston Texans estan cumpliendo la promesa que tienen hace años, y estan invictos tambien en sus primeros dos juegos. Dominaron a los Colts de Indianapolis en su primer juego, y ayer borraron un deficit de 17 puntos para ganarle a los Washington Redskins. Cuidado con los Texans, y siguiendo en ese tema, los Green Bay Packers meten miedo. Ayer dominaron a los Buffalo Bills, que no son nada, pero si la defensa sigue jugando asi, el QB Aaron Rodgers puede llevar a este equipo bien lejos esta temporada. Anoche, Peyton Manning le demonstro a su hermano menor Eli que los hermanos mayores saben mas que los niños. Los Colts apabullaron a los New York Giants de Eli 38-14. Esta noche en la edicion semanal de Monday Night Football, los New Orleans Saints viajan a San Francisco para enfrentarse a los 49ers.
Pasando al football universitario, los Huracanes de la universidad de Miami descansaron el sabado antes de su juego este jueves en Pittsburgh contra la universidad de Pittsburgh. Miami entra a ese juego 1-1 despues de la derrota contra Ohio State, y los Canes tienen que ganarle a los Panthers y el QB Jacory Harris tiene que jugar mucho mejor de lo que hizo contra Ohio State. La otra universidad local, la "universidad de Westchester", FIU, por poco se escapa con una victoria sobre un gran equipo de Texas A&M, perdiendo en el ultimo quarter despues de tener una ventaja de 20-6. El equipo del coach Mario Cristobal ya tiene que empezar a ganar juegos en el marcador final, y las llamadas "victorias morales" no resuelven absolutamente nada. La defensa de FIU esta jugando muy bien bajo su nuevo coordinador defensivo Geoff Collins, pero Cristobal y los coaches ofensivos van a tener que determinar quien es su quarterback titular y olvidarse de lo demas. Wesley Carroll tiene que ser el numero uno, y el es el unico que puede quitarse el trabajo. En el football, el equipo que se piensa que tiene dos abridores en la posicion de QB, no tiene ninguno.
En la pelota, que podemos decir de los Marlins. En este momento, no hay nada bueno, despues de seis derrotas consecutivas. Ayer, Andrew Miller y el bullpen les permitieron 13 carreras a los Cubs, y pudiera haber sido mas feo el juego, ya que los llamados lanzadores de los Peces regalaron 12 bases por bolas. Siguen siendo un equipo de .500, y nada mas. Hanley Ramirez sigue sin jugar con una lesion en el codo, y este equipo no se puede dar el lujo de no tener a todas sus piezas en el terreno de juego. Logan Morrison sigue partiendo la bola desde que lo subieron al equipo, y su racha de juegos consecutivos embasandose esta en 38. Dan Uggla esta a punto de llegar a las 100 carreras impulsadas por primera vez, y sus 31 jonrones lo han puesto en los libros de records como la unica segunda base en la historia en conectar 30 jonrones en cuatro temporadas. Hay que firmarlo a un contrato a largo plazo, al igual que a Ricky Nolasco y Anibal Sanchez. Tienen que traer un catcher de grandes ligas, y desde ahora estoy montado en la guagua de Victor Martinez. Las Medias Rojas de Boston le ofrecieron un contrato a Martinez de dos años, y el quiere mas tiempo. Si los Marlins le dan tres, pudieran convencer al Venezolano a que jugara en el sur de la Florida.
Los Phillies de Philadelphia y los Bravos de Atlanta estan peleando para posiciones en la post temporada. Philadelphia, que ha ganado siete juegos al hilo y 9 de sus ultimos 10, tienen tres juegos de ventaja sobre los Bravos en la division, y los Bravos se encuentran con dos juegos y medio de ventaja para el wild card, por delante de los Padres de San Diego. San Francisco tiene una ventaja de medio juego sobre los Padres, y un juego y medio por delante de los Rockies de Colorado, que no tienen intencion de irse tranquilos para sus hogares. Ayer los Yankees recibieron una gran noticia, aunque terminaron perdiendo su juego con los Orioles en 11 innings. Andy Pettitte regreso de una estancia de dos meses en la lista de los lesionados y tiro seis innings, en los que permitio solamente una carrera y tres hits. Los Yankees van a necesitar a Andy Pettitte en la post temporada, especialmente con AJ Burnett pasando trabajo. Burnett se aparecio el viernes con un ojo morado y no se sabe como ni quien fue. Como les mencione, las otras divisiones estan basicamente ya decididas, con los Texas Rangers y los Minnesota Twins comodamente arriba de sus divisiones respectivas.

I know it is only two games, but the Dolphins are giving us the indication that they have made huge strides this season after beginning 2-0. Sunday's victory against the Vikings was good to see, and it put the Dolphins in first place all by themselves.. The impact that Karlos Dansby has had on this defense is impressive. Now, all the Fins have to do is beat the hated Jets on sunday night.
Continuing in the NFL, the Houston Texans are opening some eyes around the league. After dominating the Colts in week one, the Texans got to 2-0 as they erased a 17 point deficit in the end of the third quarter and beat the Washington Redskins in OT. Teams are going to need to be wary of the Texans, as well as the Green Bay Packers. Yesterday, the Pack beat up on the hapless Buffalo Bills, and if the defense keeps playing like that, Aaron Rodgers is looking like he's ready to take his team to the promised land. Last night, Peyton Manning showed no brotherly love for little bro Eli and the Colts destroyed Eli's Giants 38-14. Bibg brother does know best. Tonight on MNF, the New Orleans Saints travel to San Francisco to square off against the 49ers.
In college football, the Canes had the day off on saturday, before going to Pittsburgh to hook up with the Panthers on Thursday night. Miami is 1-1 after losing to Ohio State, and the Canes are not only going to have to beat the Panthers, but QB Jacory Harris is going to have to perform much better. You can already hear the cat calls all around the talk radio circuit. Meanwhile, over in Westchester, FIU almost escaped with a victory on the road against a superior Texas A&M team. That's two moral victories to begin the season, but Mario Cristobal's team is still 0-2. They're going to have to start putting up W's, especially once they hit the Sun Belt Conference schedule. FIU's defense is playing very well under new defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, but on the offensive side of the ball, they need to figure out that Wesley Carroll is the starting quarterback and let him play. Remember, if you have two starting quarterbacks, then you have none.
In baseball, what can I say about the Marlins? At this moment, nothing good, after six consecutive losses that have put them two games under .500, with 14 games left to play this season. Yesterday, Andrew Miller again reminded us of how the Fish got hoodwinked by the Tigers in the Miguel Cabrera trade. Miller lasted ony 1 1/3 innings, and the Marlins so-called pitching staff gave up 12 walks in the 13-3 loss to the Cubs. Hanley Ramirez is still nursing a sore elbow and this team cannot afford to not have their best player on the field. Logan Morrison extended his consecutive games getting on base streak to 38. Dan Uggla is about to reach the century mark in RBI's, (he's at 96) and his 31 homers have him in the record books as the only second baseman in MLB history to hit 30 or more dingers in a season four times. The Fish need to sign Uggla to a long term deal, as well as Ricky Nolasco and Anibal Sanchez. They also need to start thinking about the future, and they need to go out and get a catcher. I am now on the Victor Martinez bandwagon. The Red Sox are not inclined to offer Martinez more than a two year deal, so this may be an open door that the Marlins can run through and sign a legitimate star at that position.
The Phillies and the Braves are fighting for the Eastern division championship, and they open a three game series in Philadelphia today. The Phillies hold a 3-game lead over the Braves in the division, and the Braves are 2 1/2 games ahead of the San Diego Padres in the wild card race. San Diego has fallen to second place in the west, half a game behind the Giants, and the Colorado Rockies are only 1 1/2 games behind the Giants. Troy Tulowitzki is, dare I say it, "EN FUEGO". The central division is almost a done deal, with the Reds holding a six game lead over the Cardinals.
In the American league, the four playoff teams are pretty much set, with only the Eastern division in question. Only half a game separate the Yankees and the Rays, and those two teams open up a four game series at Yankee stadium tonight. The Yankees receives some great news yesterday, even though they lost to the Orioles in 11 innings. Andy Pettitte came back from a two-month stint on the DL and pitched very well. Pettitte threw six innings, gave up only one run and three hits. The Yankees are going to need Pettitte in order to repeat, especially with an ineffective AJ Burnett out there. BTW, Burnett showed up to the game on Friday with a black eye and no one is saying how or who.

Comprendo que son solamente dos juegos, pero los Miami Dolphins estan demonstrando que han dado un paso adelante esta temporada. Dos victorias cerradas, pero dos victorias, y estan solitos en primer lugar en la divisio del este. La defensa esta jugando muy bien, y vemos lo que adquisiciones clave, como Karlos Dansby, traen a un equipo. Vamos a no ponerlos en el Super Bowl todavia, y ganenle a los odiados New York Jets el domingo por la noche.

La defensa de FIU esta jugando muy bien bajo su nuevo coordinador defensivo Geoff Collins, pero Cristobal y los coaches ofensivos van a tener que determinar quien es su quarterback titular y olvidarse de lo demas. Wesley Carroll tiene que ser el numero uno, y el es el unico que puede quitarse el trabajo. En el football, el equipo que se piensa que tiene dos abridores en la posicion de QB, no tiene ninguno.
En la pelota, que podemos decir de los Marlins. En este momento, no hay nada bueno, despues de seis derrotas consecutivas. Siguen siendo un equipo de .500, y nada mas. Hanley Ramirez sigue sin jugar con una lesion en el codo, y este equipo no se puede dar el lujo de no tener a todas sus piezas en el terreno de juego. Hay que firmarlo a un contrato a largo plazo, al igual que a Ricky Nolasco y Anibal Sanchez. Tienen que traer un catcher de grandes ligas, y desde ahora estoy montado en la guagua de Victor Martinez. Las Medias Rojas de Boston le ofrecieron un contrato a Martinez de dos años, y el quiere mas tiempo. Si los Marlins le dan tres, pudieran convencer al Venezolano a que jugara en el sur de la Florida.

Philadelphia, que ha ganado siete juegos al hilo y 9 de sus ultimos 10, tienen tres juegos de ventaja sobre los Bravos en la division, y los Bravos se encuentran con dos juegos y medio de ventaja para el wild card, por delante de los Padres de San Diego.
