It is time again for my weekly NFL picks, as well the scheduled games involving state of Florida college teams.

A 4-2-1 record ATS last week took my season numbers to 28-13-2 against the spread, 21-8 overall.

Remember, I select the games based on the national telecasts, the Dolphins’ game, and at least one of the doubleheader games on Sunday.

These selections are for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY.  Don’t forget that wagering is illegal at Bushwood, sir.

Here are my SUPER SEVEN picks this week in the NFL:

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS):

My picks are highlighted.

Thursday

Jets @ PATRIOTS -8 8:30 pm CBS

The reports of the demise of the Patriots were greatly exaggerated.
Sunday

Dolphins + 3 over BEARS 1:00 pm CBS

I am sticking with the Dolphins, at least for one more week.  Their defense played extremely well against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers last week, and with any luck, and a little bit of better coaching, they would have won that contest.

Seahawks -6 over RAMS 1:00 pm FOX

After a stinker last week, the Seahawks are going to take it out on the Rams this Sunday.

COLTS -3 over Bengals 1:00 pm CBS

Riding the "Luck" train for awhile longer.

CHARGERS -4 over Chiefs 4:05 pm CBS

The Chargers are really good.

BRONCOS -5 over 49ers 8:30 pm NBC

Hard to pick against the Broncos and Payton Manning at home.

Monday Night

Texans +4  over STEELERS          8:30 pm             ESPN

The Steelers are struggling.  The Texans need a win after falling to the Colts.

Happy Tuesday!  Here is today’s blog.

Let’s kick it off with the NFL.

The Dolphins lost a close one to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, 27-24.  After  a very ineffective performance in the first half, QB Ryan Tannehill led the Fins to three second-half touchdowns to take the lead, but it wasn’t enough as Aaron Rodgers mounted one of his patented fourth-quarter comebacks, scoring the game-winning touchdown with three seconds remaining in the contest.

There are no such things as “moral victories”, so I’m not hanging my hat on that one.  However, it is good to see the Dolphins at a point where they were in a position to beat a very good Packers team, and, in fact, should have won the game.  A questionable timeout by the Dolphins during the Packers’s game-winning drive, some shoddy pass coverage schemes and poor tackling came into play as well after the game.  In order for the Dolphins to take a step in the right direction, they need to start winning these games.  It isn’t just the players . . . the coaching staff needs to also step up their game.

Next up:  the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, next Sunday at 1:00 pm.  Another opportunity for the Dolphins’ defense to step up, after a very impressive performance against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

The Dolphins got some more bad news, as RB Knowshown Moreno suffered a season-ending knee injury.  We have probably seen the last of Moreno, who only has a one-year deal for this season, in a Dolphins uniform.

How did I do on my picks this past week?

Once again, I went 4-2-1.  My record now, after six weeks, is a lofty 28-13-2 against the spread, 31-12 overall.

My winners, losers, and pushes for this past weekend are highlighted.:

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS):

Thursday

Colts 33 TEXANS 28 (Colts -3 over TEXANS)

Here are all of last weekend’s game recaps and scores:

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9

Indianapolis 33 Houston 28

Andrew Luck and T. Y. Hilton lit up the Texans.  Luck threw for 370 yards and 3 TD’s, and Hilton finished with nine catches for 223 yards and a score.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12

New England 37 Buffalo 22

New owners didn’t help the Bills against the Patriots, as the Pats beat the Bills for the 21st time in their last 22 encounters.  Tom Brady was 27-of-37 for 361 yards and threw four touchdown passes.

Cincinnati 37 Carolina 37 (OT)

Mike Nugent and Graham Gano each kicked field goals in overtime, but Nugent missed a potential game-winner as the Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers played to a 37-37 tie.

Cleveland 31 Pittsburgh 10

Ben Tate rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns.  Pittsburgh gave up 31 straight points after the first quarter.

Green Bay 27 Miami 24

Aaron Rodgers engineered a game-winning drive, throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass with three seconds remaining to Andrew Quarless.  Ryan Tannehill led three straight second-half touchdown drives for the Dolphins as they took the lead, but it wasn’t enough.

Detroit 17 Minnesota 3

The Detroit Lions had eight sacks and three interceptions.  Matt Stafford was 19-for-33 for 185 yards and one touchdown.

Denver 31 NY Jets 17

Peyton Manning finished 22-of-33 for 237 yards. Demaryius Thomas had 10 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Julius Thomas caught four passes for 51 yards and two TD’s.

Baltimore 48 Tampa Bay 17

Joe Flacco threw for career-high five touchdowns, completing 21-29 passes for 306 yards.  Torrey Smith caught two of Flacco's touchdown passes and Steve Smith had another while amassing 110 yards on five receptions. Justin Forsett added 111 yards on the ground on just 14 carries.

Tennessee 16 Jacksonville 14

Ryan Succop connected on three field goals and the Titans needed a game-saving field-goal block in the final seconds to beat the Jags.

San Diego 31 Oakland 28

Branden Oliver's 1-yard touchdown run put San Diego ahead, and an interception by Jason Verrett sealed the win. Philip Rivers ended up with 313 yards and three TD’s on 22-of-34 passing.

Arizona 30 Washington 20

Carson Palmer completed 28-of-44 passes for 250 yards and two touchdown passes in his return, after missing the past three games with a nerve issue in his throwing shoulder.  Larry Fitzgerald had 98 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.

Chicago 27 Atlanta 13

Matt Forte rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Jay Cutler completed 26-of-38 passes for 381 yards and a touchdown, while Forte also added 77 yards on 10 catches.  Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall totaled 136 and 113 receiving yards, respectively.

Dallas 30 Seattle 23

DeMarco Murray joined Jim Brown as the only running backs in NFL history to surpass 100 rushing yards in six straight games to start the season.  Murray carried 29 times for 115 yards, and his go-ahead touchdown run with 3:16 to play gave the Cowboys the lead for good.

Philadelphia 27 NY Giants 0

LeSean McCoy exploded for 149 yards on 22 carries. Nick Foles completed 21-of-34 passes for 248 yardsand two touchdowns.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 13

San Francisco 31 St. Louis 17

Colin Kaepernick passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns after the Rams jumped out to a 14-0 lead.  San Francisco scored 24 straight points after that.  Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree each hauled in a TD pass.

Let’s shift gears, and head out to the baseball diamonds.

The Kansas City Royals have taken a 2-0 lead in their series with the Baltimore Orioles, and now are home for the next two contests.  Over in the National League, the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals are tied at one game apiece.

Here are the probable pitchers and schedules for the week:

TUESDAY

4:00 pm   Cards @ Giants John Lackey vs Tim Hudson    Fox Sports 1

8:00 pm Orioles @ Royals Wei-Yin Chen vs Jeremy Guthrie TBS

WEDNESDAY

4:00 pm     Orioles @ Royals Chris Tillman vs James Shields
TBS

8:00 pm Cards @ Giants      Shelby Miller vs Ryan Vogelsong
Fox Sports 1

Playoff news and notes:

In Wednesday’s game, since game Three was rained out in Kansas City on Monday, both managers have the options of going with their game one starters on regular rest.  Otherwise, the Royals could choose to go with Jason Vargas, while the O’s could opt for Miguel Gonzalez.

The Cardinals are keeping their fingers crossed on the status of catcher Yadier Molina.  Molina suffered a strained oblique muscle in Sunday’s game.  He is feeling better, but he is not in the starting lineup for game 3.  A. J. Pierzynski will be starting behind the plate for the Cards, hitting sixth in the lineup.  Molina may be available off the bench.  Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath for him to make an appearance in game 3.

The Orioles have an uphill battle as they face a 2-0 deficit in their series with the Royals.  Eleven times a home team has lost the first two games of a seven-game League Championship Series, and none have rallied to win the series.  We should remember however, that both the 1986 Mets and the 1996 Yankees lost the first two games of the World Series at home, and came back to win the series.

Can you believe that the Royals have had at least one runner on base in every inning so far in this series against the Orioles?  They are beginning to look like a team of destiny, as they are the first team in major league history to win four extra-inning games in the postseason.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Who has the record for the most postseason home runs in MLB history?  Who holds the record for the most World Series home runs?  The answer comes later, alligator.

Rookies of the Year Mon   November 10
Managers of the Year Tue    November 11
Cy Young Awards Wed   November 12
Most Valuable Players Thu   November 13

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Who has the record for the most postseason home runs in MLB history?  Who holds the record for the most World Series home runs?

The postseason record for home runs is held by Manny Ramirez, with 29.  Bernie Williams is second, with 22 and Derek Jeter is third, with 20.  The World Series record for home runs belongs to Mickey Mantle, who blasted 18.  Babe Ruth is second, with 15 and Yogi Berra holds down the third spot with 12.

NOTE TO THE NEW COMMISSIONER:  BASEBALL NEEDS TO  DIFFERENTIATE AND SEPARATE WORLD SERIES RECORDS FROM POSTSEASON RECORDS.   THE WORLD SERIES RECORDS SHOULD REMAIN SEPARATE AND STAND ALONE.

Happy Tuesday!

Lots of great action this past weekend, both on the gridiron and on the diamonds.

Let’s kick it off with the NFL.

The Dolphins enjoyed their bye week, unless your name is Derrick Shelby.  The defensive end was suspended indefinitely by the team after his arrest in a Fort Lauderdale nightclub.  According to the police report, Shelby was touching women without their permission.  He appeared intoxicated, and was ordered to leave several times by an officer and he refused, asking “What are you going to do?”.  The officers then tried to place Shelby in custody, but he pushed them away and took an aggressive fighting stance.  He was placed on the ground and continued to resist arrest. Officers then used a Taser three times before he was subdued.

The rest of the team is busy preparing for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.  Game time at the Seven Names Stadium is 1:00 pm.

How did I do on my picks this past week?

I went 4-2-1.  My record now, after five weeks, is a lofty 24-11-1 against the spread, 27-9 overall.

My winners, losers, and pushes for this past weekend are highlighted.:

Here are all of last weekend’s game recaps and scores:

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2

Green Bay 42, Minnesota 10

Aaron Rodgers threw for three touchdowns and Eddie Lacy had a season-high 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5

New Orleans 37, Tampa Bay 31 (OT)

Khiry Robinson's 18-yard touchdown run on the first possession of overtime capped the Saints' comeback.  Drew Brees overcame a three-interception performance with 371 yards and two touchdowns.

Dallas 20, Houston 17 (OT)

Dan Bailey kicked a 49-yard field goal in overtime. The Texans scored the last 10 points of regulation to force overtime, but were forced to punt on the opening possession of the extra session.

Pittsburgh 17, Jacksonville 9

Ben Roethlisberger threw for a touchdown and Brice McCain returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown.  Antonio Brown caught five catches for 84 yards.

Philadelphia 34, St. Louis 28

Nick Foles threw a pair of touchdown passes but finished with just 207 yards with an interception and a lost fumble. The Rams scored the final 21 points and moved the ball just past midfield in the final minute, but two dropped passes and an incompletion on fourth down spoiled a chance at the miracle comeback.

Buffalo 17, Detroit 14

Former Dolphin Dan Carpenter hit a 58-yard field goal with just four seconds to play.  Kyle Orton threw for 308 yards and a touchdown on 30-of-43 passing.

NY Giants 30, Atlanta 20

Odell Beckham Jr.'s 15-yard touchdown catch, his first TD in the NFL, was part of a 20-point swing that brought the G-Men back from a 20-10 third-quarter deficit to post its third consecutive win.

Indianapolis 20, Baltimore 13

Andrew Luck passed for a touchdown and ran for another score.

Cleveland 29, Tennessee 28

Brian Hoyer's second touchdown pass of the fourth quarter to Travis Benjamin was the go-ahead score with 1:09 left in the contest, as the Browns rallied from a 28-3 first-half deficit. Hoyer ended the day 21-of-37 for 292 yards, three TD’s and one interception.

Carolina 31, Chicago 24

Former Cane Greg Olsen had six catches for 72 yards and two TD’s.

Denver 41, Arizona 20

Peyton Manning threw his 500th touchdown pass in the first quarter and finished with four TD tosses.  Manning finished 31-of-47 for 479 yards.  Demaryius Thomas had eight receptions for a career-high 226 yards and two touchdowns.

San Francisco 22, Kansas City 17

Phil Dawson kicked five field goals.

San Diego 31, NY Jets 0

Philip Rivers completed 20-28 attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns, two of the TD’s went to Antonio Gates.  Jets’ quarterbacks Geno Smith and Michael Vick combined to go 13-of-32 for a measly 74 yards.

New England 43, Cincinnati 17

Bottom line - - - - never count out Tom Brady and the Patriots. Brady completed 23-of-35 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns.  Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen ran for 113 and 90 yards, respectively.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6

Seattle 27, Washington 17

Here is another bulletin for you - - - Russell Wilson is really good and a lot of fun to watch, unless he is playing against the team you root for.  Wilson set a career high for rushing yards with 122 yards and a TD on 11 carries.  He also completed 18-of-24 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.  Incredibly, the Seahawks had three touchdowns called back due to penalties.

Let’s shift gears, and head out to the baseball diamonds.

Be honest . . . Did ANYONE really expect both the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles to sweep their American League Divisional Series?  Personally, I did not see that one coming at all, especially the Orioles beating the Tigers and the last three AL Cy Young winners in three games in a row.  That was surreal.  Congrats to both teams.  The ALCS begins Friday at Baltimore.

Over in the National League, the San Francisco Giants lead their NLDS series against the Washington Nationals 2-1, and the St. Louis Cardinals also have a 2 games to 1 advantage over the LA Dodgers.  The probable pitchers for game 4 and game 5 (if needed):

TUESDAY

5:00 pm Dodgers @ Cards Clayton Kershaw vs Shelby Miller

9:00 pm Nats @ Giants Gio Gonzalez vs Ryan Vogelsong

THURSDAY (IF NEEDED)

5:00 pm Giants @ Nats Jake Peavy vs Steven Strasburg

9:00 pm Cards @ Dodgers Adam Wainwright vs Zack Greinke

By the way, the Dodgers are benching Yasiel Puig for Tuesday’s game 4, and he will be replaced by Andre Ethier.  Puig has struck out eight times in his 12 at-bats so far in the ALDS.

Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly is gambling as well in starting Clayton Kershaw on just three-days' rest.  Here’s a number for you:  teams using a starter on three-day’s rest against a team using a starter with four-days’ rest have a W-L record of 18-35.  In my opinion, you have to take that chance, especially as good as Kershaw is.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are going with Shelby Miller, instead of pitching Adam Wainwright on short rest.  In his last five starts during the regular season, Miller was 3-0, a 1.48 ERA, and 26 strikeouts vs only 5 walks. Good move, as well, by Cards' manager Mike Matheny.

In the other series, the Nationals are hoping that winning game three gives them a little momentum for tonight’s game 4.  It helps that they have Gio Gonzalez on the mound.  The Hialeah-product went 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA in his last seven starts of the regular season.  The Nats hope that this is enough to erase the bad memories of Gio in the 2012 playoffs, when he walked 11 batters in 10 innings to go with a 4.50 ERA.

On the other hand, Ryan Vogelsong has been anything but good for the Giants.  In September, Vogelsong went 0-4 with a 5.53 ERA.  The Nationals are licking their chops as they get ready to go against Vogelsong on Tuesday night.  Ian Desmond, Adam LaRoche, Wilson Ramos, Anthony Rendon, Denard Span and Jayson Werth are hitting a combined .362 against Vogelsong in their careers.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Panda, Pablo Sandoval, has hit in 14 consecutive post-season games.  Two part question:  Who holds the NL record for longest hitting streak (15 games) in the post-season and ho has the major league record (17 games)?  The answer comes later, alligator.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Panda, Pablo Sandoval, has hit in 14 consecutive post-season games.  Two part question:  Who holds the NL record for longest hitting streak (15 games) in the post-season and who has the major league record (17 games)?

The National league record is held by Marquis Grissom.  The Major League record for consecutive post-season games hitting streak is 18 and is shared by Hank Bauer (World Series 1956-1958), Derek Jeter (1998-1999), and Manny Ramirez (2003-2004).
