In last night’s Monday Night Football Extravaganza, Payton Manning led the Denver Broncos to a 37-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders.  Manning threw three touchdown passes and continues to amaze everyone around the NFL.
A late, meaningless touchdown by the Raiders made the game a PUSH against the spread, as Denver was favored by 16.  That put me at 4-2-1 for the week in my picks, and 5-2 straight up.  Good start to the season.

vs the Spread Straight Up         Season Total

WEEK 1 3-2-1                  4-2                 -----    -----
WEEK 2 5-2                     7-0                 8-4-1   11-2
WEEK 3 4-2-1                  5-2               12-6-2   16-2

The Dolphins got some bad news today. Cameron Wake’s injured knee may keep him out of the lineup for a couple of games.  Paul Soliai, Dimitri Patterson, and Koa Misi are also injuerd, but the extent of their injuries has not officially been released.  It doesn’t get any easier next week, as the Fins will travel to New Orleans for a Monday Night game against the Saints, who are also off to a 3-0 start.

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with more news from all around the league:

Of course, we can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

Let’s go out to the ballparks.

The Marlins got a brilliant performance from Nathan Eovaldi and the Fish shut out the visiting Phillies last night, 4-0.  Eovaldi allowed just three hits in his 7 2/3 innings of work, striking out five and walking two.  Mike Dunn came in to get the final out in the eighth inning, and Steve Chisek closed it out in the ninth.   Donovan Solano, Ed Lucas, Christian Yelich, and Justin Ruggiano drove in the Marlins’ runs in the win.  Tonight, the Fish will send Henderson Alvarez to the hill and he will face Zach Miner.  Game time is 7:10 pm. On Wednesday, it will be Brad Hand for the Marlins against Brad Hand.  Game time for Wednesday is also 7:10 pm.

After a day off on Thursday, the Marlins will close out the regular season against the Detroit Tigers in a three-game weekend series.  Although most baseball fans in South Florida are looking forward to seeing the Tigers and old friends Miguel Cabrera, Anibal Sanchez, and Omar Infante here next weekend, don’t count Detroit manager Jim Leyland among those happy people:

The Marlins are still the worst offensive team in the majors, and one of the worst in major league history.  The Fish have been held to three runs or less 97 times this season, and their record in those 97 games is 18-79. Taking it one step further,

When scoring three runs in a game       - 7-18
When scoring two runs in a game - 9-20
When scoring one run in a game - 2-23

Of course, they lead the majors in getting shutout, having been blanked 18 times so far this season.

The Marlins are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored this season in MLB, scoring only 503 runs in their 157 games, an obscene 3.2 runs per contest.  Here is the complete list of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 58-99 503
White Sox 62-94 582
Padres 73-83 584
Cubs 65-92 594
Phillies 71-85 595

In contrast, the Boston Red Sox (95-62) lead MLB with 812 runs scored.

The Marlins are, once again, the butt of all jokes around MLB, thanks to their incompetent owner, Jeffrey Loria.  Sources close to the Marlins are telling me that Larry Beinfest, Mike Hill, and even prodigal step-son David Samson will all be losing their jobs.  (I’ll believe the Samsom one when I see it).  Look for Dan Jennings to be named GM, President of Baseball Operations, Chief Minion, or whatever title Loria gives him, since he is one of Loria’s “yes-men”.  Loria blames everything going on with the ball club on these three since, of course, Loria is above blame. How long can this continue to go on, and how long is MLB going to allow it?

Here are the capsules and summaries from all the games in the majors yesterday.

Today’s games around the majors,

Here is the complete, month-by-month 2014 schedule for the Marlins:

Great finish this season as we race towards the playoffs.

In the American League, the division races are officially over.  The Wild Card is another story.  Tampa Bay leads Cleveland by one full game for the top spot, with the Texas Rangers one game behind the Indians.  Kansas City is 3 games back of the second wild card spot.  You can put a fork in the Yankees and the Orioles, who are pretty much done.  The Yanks and the O’s are sitting 4 and 5 games back of the second wild card spot, respectively.

Over in the National League, the only division that is yet to be decided is the Central, where the Cardinals lead both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds by 2 games.  All three teams won last night, so everything stays the same.  The two teams that don’t win the division, will face each other in the one-game wild card playoff.  The Cardinals’ five remaining games are all at home:  2 more against the Nationals, and 3 against the Cubs.  The Pirates are in Chicago to take on the Cubs, and will then hook up with the Reds in Cincinnati.  The Reds are also at home for their remaining five games, two more with the Mets, before their three-game series with the Pirates.

In other baseball news, Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles suffered a very ugly leg injury yesterday:

Buster Olney poses the question:  Will Mariano Rivera be the first unanimous selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown?

David Schoenfield of ESPN makes a case for three different MVP hopefuls in the American League:

My vote would still go to Miguel Cabrera.  To me, that one is a no-brainer.

In Miami Heat news, the team signed undrafted free agent rookie point guard Larry Drew II.

In other NBA news, I wouldn’t have guessed or predicted this one . . . The Memphis Grizzlies were just named the Number 1 Sports franchise by ESPN the Magazine.  The Miami Herald must have also been surprised and shocked, as they refer to them in their headline as the Titans.  Check it out.  I wouldn’t lie to you.  Congratulations to the Herald editors.  They continue to excel at their work.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  What member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown came the closest to being a unanimous selection for induction?

Tom Seaver missed being a unanimous selection by five votes, finishing with the all-time best 98.8% of the vote (425 out of 430 votes).  Other notable near-misses:

Cal Ripken Jr. 8 votes short Hank Aaron 9 votes short
Ted Williams 20 votes short Willie Mays 23 votes short

Before Mariano is eligible five years from now, watch out for this next election and Greg Maddux.  After 355 career wins and four Cy Young awards, you’d think . . . . .

Is it me, or are some hall of fame voters just plain STUPID?  Who wre the 9 idiots that left Hank Aaron off their ballot?  The 20 morons that chose to ignore Ted Williams?  Ridiculous.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
