Please allow me a personal moment this morning:  Happy Anniversary to my wife, Grace.  Definitely my best pick ever.  I love you.

In the NFL yesterday, a double dose of Monday Night Football:

Philadelphia 33 Washington 27
The Eagles’ new high-powered offense was enough to beat the Redskins, who struggled in the return of Robert Griffin III.

Houston 31 San Diego 28
The Texans erased a 21-point deficit in the third quarter.

Here are the complete results and capsules for all the games in Week 1:

Here is the schedule for WEEK 2:

In Dolphins news, receiver Mike Wallace tried to take his foot out of his mouth by saying all the right things:

The Fins are looking for solutions to their running game woes:

In case you missed them, here are some of my thoughts from the Dolphins’ win on Sunday:

Nice win, but the lack of rushing offense concerns me.  Ryan Tannehill looked good enough, even without the threat of a running game.

Speaking of offense, why was Mike Wallace not targeted at all in the first half of the game?  Unless Cleveland cornerback Joe Haden is the greatest cornerback ever, he cannot possibly cover Mike Wallace one-on-one and get away with it.  Game plan needs to be tweaked to include Wallace.

I told you after the draft that rookie kicker Caleb Sturgis was going to have a huge positive impact.  3-3 on field goal attempts, and finding the end zone on his kickoffs consistently.

Sticking to the kicking game, punter Brandon Fields is again showing he is All-Pro material.  Five punts for just a hair under a 54-yard average yesterday.

To summarize, it is going to get a lot tougher for the Dolphins the next four weeks, so Dolfans need to savor this win and prepare for a possible rough stretch.  Their next four games: at Indianapolis (Andrew Luck), Atlanta (Matt Ryan), at New Orleans (Drew Brees), and Baltimore (Joe Flacco), before their bye week on October 13th.

The Herald has more Dolphin news, including how the Stephen Ross is prepared to improve his proposal to improve the Seven Names Stadium:

Here is Armando Salguero with all the latest:

I finished the week 3-2-1 on my picks against the spread, the Texans saved me from a losing week last night and gave me a push.  Not a bad start.  I’ll try and do better next week.

A good week as well in my Fantasy League, as I managed to win 177.28 to 161.18.

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with more news from all around the league:

Of course, we can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

The Marlins fell to the Braves last night at Marlins Park, 5-2, in the first game a four game series.  Kris Medlen shutout the Fish over the first six innings, before giving up a couple of runs in the seventh.  Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth inning to record his league-leading 45th save.  Evan Gattis had a two-run double. The Marlins will send Tom Koehler to the mound tonight for game two of the series at 7:10 pm.  Fredi Gonzalez will counter with Julio Teheran.  Make a note that Jose Fernandez’ last start this season will be on Wednesday:

WED Mike Minor vs Jose Fernandez 7:10 pm
THU  Alex Wood vs Nathan Eovaldi       12:40 pm

The Marlins are still the worst offensive team in the majors.  The Fish have been held to three runs or less 88 times this season, and their record in those 88 games is 17-71. Taking it one step further,

When scoring three runs in a game    - 6-16
When scoring two runs in a game - 9-18
When scoring one run in a game - 2-21

Of course, they lead the majors in getting shutout, having been blanked 16 times so far this season.

The Marlins are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, scoring only 463 runs in their 142 games, an obscene 3.26 runs per contest.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 53-89 463
White Sox 58-85 536
Phillies 66-77 539
Padres 65-77 543
Giants 65-79 544

In contrast, the Boston Red Sox (87-58) lead MLB with 757 runs scored and the Detroit Tigers (82-62) have plated 729.  The Sox have played one more game than the Tigers.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Nationals 9 Mets 0
Gio Gonzalez took a no hitter into the seventh inning, and finished with a one-hit shutout.  The Nationals blasted five home runs - Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Tyler Moore, Wilson Ramos, and Denard Span all connected long distance.

Cubs 2 Reds 0
Travis Wood combined with two reliever to shutout the Reds.  Ryan Sweeney and Luis Valbuena provided the offense with solo home runs.

Giats 3 Rockies 2 (10 innings)
Brandon Belt singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Dodgers 8               D-Backs 1
Juan Uribe belted three home runs and added an RBI single.  Ricky Nolasco improved to 13-9, winning his seventh straight decision.

Over in the American League,

Orioles 4 Yankees 2
Chris Tillman improved to 16-5 this season.  Nich Markakis went 3-4 with an RBI in the win.  Alex Rodriguez and Lyle Overbay connected long distance in the loss.

Indians 4 Royals 3
Carlos Santana homered in the seventh inning to decide the game.  Ubaldo Jimenez went seven innings, allowing just an unearned run.

Twins 6 Angels 3
Trevor Plouffe drove in three runs.

White Sox 5 Tigers 1
Chris Sale gave up only four hits and one run in eight innings, striking out eight.  Max Scherzer fell to 19-3, failing in his second attempt to reach 20 wins.

Pirates 1 Rangers 0
Gerrit Cole was just a little better than Yu Darvish, allowing just three hits in his seven innings of work, striking out nine in the process.

Astros 6 Mariners 4
The Astros scored four runs in the ninth inning, the last two coming on a two-run single by Jonathan Villar.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  As we approach the end of the regular season, there are a lot of opinions as to who will be the MVP’s in their respective leagues.  Who is the only player to win the Most Valuable Player in BOTH the NL and the AL?  The answer comes later, alligator.

The Herald’s Manny Navarro and Susan Miller Degnan have the latest scoop from the University of Miami, as the Canes return to the practice field and will enjoy a bye week this weekend:

FIU’s next game is this Saturday, at 6:00 pm, again at FIU Stadium, against Bethune Cookman, who pummeled Virginia Union 66-7 this past saturday.  FIU opened as a three-point favorite over Bethune, but after just a few minutes, the line had moved to Bethune Cookman being favored by three.

It is really getting ugly at FIU.  Reaction after their second blowout loss from the FIU faithful at the game was not a pretty picture.  They have even started a web site asking for the firing of FIU’s athletic director Pete Garcia.  www.firepetegarcia.com

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  As we approach the end of the regular season, there are a lot of opinions as to who will be the MVP’s in their respective leagues.  Who is the only player to win the Most Valuable Player in BOTH the NL and the AL?

Frank Robinson won the MVP while playing for the Cincinnati Reds in 1961, and won it with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
