Good playoff football this past weekend, with some close games and one incredible comeback.

Good week in my playoff picks, as I finished 3-0-1 against the spread, 3-1 overall.  I went against the norm and took three road games and managed to win those, but pushed on the only home team I went with.

I finished the regular season with a 61-51-7 record against the spread, and 72-47 overall.

SATURDAY

Indianapolis 45 Kansas City 44 (INDY +3)

The Colts erased 28-point deficit to beat the Chiefs.  FIU grad TY Hilton caught 13 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 64-yarder.

New Orleans 26 Philadelphia 24 (NO +3)

Shayne Graham’s fourth field goal of the game lifted the Saints for their first road playoff win in team history.

SUNDAY

San Diego 27 Cincinnati 10 (SD +7)

The Chargers capitalized on four Bengal turnovers to beat Cincinnati, who  were 8-0 at home this past regular season.

San Francisco 23 Green Bay 20 (GB +3) PUSH

Phil Dawson’s 33 yard field goal as time expired was the difference.

Here is the complete NFL scoreboard, with game links:

Of course, we can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In other NFL news, another coaching casualty as Mike Munchak and the Tennessee Titans parted ways.  Munchak turned down a contract extension and a raise because the team wanted him to dictate specific coaching changes and changes in how the team was run.  Munchak is the leading candidate to take over the head coaching job at Penn State University.

What are the Dolphins up to?  Not much, really.  Thanks for asking.

Here’s more on the Fins from Armando Salguero:

There’s always next season.  The Dolphins will play the AFC West and NFC North in addition to their usual AFC East opponents.

Their home schedule includes a visit from Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay, and they will be traveling to Denver to face the Broncos and Peyton Manning.   One game date is already determined:  the Fins will play the Oakland Raiders in London on Sept. 28. That will count as a road game. The rest of the exact game dates will be announced in the spring.

2014 Home schedule: Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, Kansas City, San Diego, Green Bay, Minnesota and Baltimore.

2014 Road schedule: Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Oakland (in London), and Jacksonville.

Here is the 2014 draft order, according to ESPN.  There are coin flips pending and the final order will be determined by playoff results.  The only thing that is certain is that the Houston Texans are on the clock.

In college football, the National Championship game takes center stage tonight in Pasadena, as the #1 Florida State Seminoles take on the #2 Auburn Tigers.  Auburn is looking to become the eighth consecutive national champion for the Southeast Conference.  As good as they’ve been this year in close games and miracle finishes, I don’t see another miracle happening tonight.  Florida State will take home the trophy.

In other college football news, the speculation is over in Coral Gables.  University of Miami head coach Al Golden confirmed yesterday that he will remain at the “U”, after being in consideration for the job at Penn State.

Manny Navarro and Susan Miller Degnan have the latest from Coral Gables.

Here’s the latest from FIU.  David J. Neal of the Herald has the details:

Here’s the latest from Tallahassee and #1-ranked FSU:

From Gainesville and the University of Florida:

We welcome the Central Florida Knights to the blog:

In baseball news, I am hearing that the decision on the Alex Rodriguez suspension could be coming down as early as tomorrow.  If I was a betting man, I would bet that he gets suspended anywhere from 100-games to a full season.  Stay tuned.

The Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will announce the class of 2014 on Wednesday.  I will have my list of 10 that would have gotten my vote tomorrow:

In other news around baseball,

Marlins’ pitchers and catchers report February 16th, position players arrive February 20th, and the spring training games begin February 26th, when the Fish play the University of Miami Hurricanes.  They will then play the FIU Panthers on the 27th.  Both of those games will be in Jupiter.

Here is the complete preseason schedule for the Fish:

In boxing news,

Here is Santos Perez’ weekly boxing spotlight column from the Miami Herald.  This week’s column includes a story on up-and-coming boxers for 2014:

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Which ML baseball single-season record has stood the longest?

The single-season record that has been around the longest time is batting average in a season. Nap Lajoie hit .426 in 1901.  The next longest-standing record is wins in a season, set by Jack Chesbro in 1904, when he won 41 games.  I’l go out on a limb and GUARANTEE that these two records will never be broken.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
