The Marlins opened the second half of the season by losing two out of three to the first place Washington Nationals.  The Fish will try to salvage a split of the four game series tonight with Carlos Zambrano on the mound against Edwin Jackson.  In yesterday’s 4-0 loss, the Marlins reverted to their old ways and ended up 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.  This is With Jose Reyes hitting just over .260, and with Logan Morrison and Hanley Ramirez in the .240‘s, this is an anemic offensive team.  

There was some entertainment yesterday when manager Ozzie Guillen decided to turn back the clock and complain about pine tar on Bryce Harper’s bat.  I would have loved to see if Harper could have come close to George Brett’s reaction way back when.  Speaking of weak attempts at entertaining, Fox Sports Florida decided to show the selection of the pool boy at the Clevelander at the Stadium during their broadcast Friday night.  Note to the Marlins and to Fox Sports Florida:  NOBODY TUNES IN TO A BASEBALL GAME ON TV TO SEE THAT.  The fans that watch baseball on TV are serious fans that want to watch a game.  It is one thing to provide all that fluffy, glitzy, showbiz stuff at the park, but it is not what TV viewers want to watch.  Another indication that this ballclub has taken on the identity of the new stadium . . . a beautiful structure with a lot of glitz and a lot of “South Beach”, but with no heart and soul.  

Juan Carlos Oviedo, the artist formerly known as Leo Nuñez, had to leave a rehab game with elbow discomfort.  He is back in South Florida to try and determine what that is all about.  

In other baseball news this weekend, the Braves keep on rolling and swept the Mets in a three game series, extending their winning streak to seven games, and have crept to within three games of the Nationals.  The Cincinnati Reds swept their series with the St. Louis Cardinals to move into first place in the central division, one game ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lost two out of three to the Brewers.  The SF Giants somersaulted the Dodgers to move into first place in the NL West.  The Yankees are still dominating the AL East, with an eight game cushion over the Orioles.  New York took two out of three against the Angels in the Bronx.  

Leave it up to Bobby Valentine to continue to stir up controversy where there shouldn’t be any.  His comments yesterday on the bad ending with Kevin Youkilis were uncalled for and unnecessary.  He is an old gossip who has lost any credibility and respect he may have had in the Red Sox clubhouse.  Carl Crawford returns to the Red Sox lineup today, after Jacoby Ellsbury came back on Friday.  They need all the help they gan get. 

By the way, I’m sticking with my selection of Mike Trout of the Angels of MVP and Rookie of the Year.  What a talent!  Aroldis Chapman is dominating again as the closer in Cincinnati, but the Reds are still talking about turning him into a starter at some point.  How stupid is that?  Speaking of closers, Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves is having another monster year, and he is going to give RA Dickey and Gio Gonzalez a run for their money for the National League Cy Young.  

In the NBA,  LinSanity may be over in New York.  After the Houston Rockets extended an offer sheet that will pay Lin more than $25 million over the next three years, sources are reporting that the Knicks are content to letting him walk.  New York signed veteran point guard and future hall of famer Jason Kidd and obtained Raymond Felton in a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.  No room at the inn for Lin, especially at that price.  With  Lin seemingly going to Houston, could that become a factor in the Rockets working out a deal with the Orlando Magic for disgruntled center Dwight Howard?  Going back to Jason Kidd, he got arrested this weekend for DUI after crashing his car into a telephone pole.  Good start for Kidd in NY.

The 2012 version of the Dream Team trounced the Dominican team in their first exhibition game 113-59 and take the court again tonight for another exhibition friendly against Brazil.   

In NFL news, the New Orleans Saints and QB Drew Brees were able to reach an agreement on a five-year, $100 million contract, with $60 million in guaranteed money.  Today is the deadline for teams to sign their “franchise tag” players to long term deals.  Those that do not reach an agreement, can only play this year under the terms of the tag.  The top names on this list are wide receivers Dwayne Bowe of the KC Chiefs, Wes Welker of the NE Patriots, and running backs Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens and Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears.  We’ll know more tomorrow.

In golf, the British Open begins on thursday.  The most storied and historical tournament in golf will again be a battle to see which golfer can play best in horrible weather conditions.

Los Marlins abrieron la segunda mitad de la temporada perdiendo de 3-2 contra los Washington Nationals en el Marlins Park este fin de semana, y esta noche trataran de terminar dividiendo honores con los Nationals en el cuarto juego de la serie.  Los Peces enviaran a Carlos Zambrano a la lomita esta noche contra Edwin Jackson.  En la derrota de 4-0 ayer,  los Marlins regresaron a forma y se fueron de 13-1 con corredores en posicion anotadora.  Asi es muy dificil, si no imposible.  Con Jose Reyes bateando alrededor de .260, y Logan Morrison y Hanley Ramirez en los .240, estamos viendo a un equipo totalmente inepto en la ofensiva.  

Por lo menos, tuvimos un poco de entretenimiento ayer, cuando el manager Ozzie Guillen decidio volver al pasado cuando se quejo con el umpire sobre la cantidad de chapapote en el bate de Bryce Harper. (Se acuerdan de George Brett?) Hubiera querido ver si la reaccion de Harper se acercaba a la de Brett en el 1983.  Hablando de intentos  malos para entretener, la cadena de television Fox Sports Florida decidio perder el tiempo durante la transmicion del juego del viernes cubriendo la seleccion de un encargado de la piscina en el Clevelander en el nuevo parque.  Una nota para los Marlins:  NADIE SINTONIZA UN JUEGO DE PELOTA EN LA TELEVISION PARA VER SEMEJANTE RIDICULEZ.  Las persones que miran un juego de pelota por television lo hacen para ver el juego solamente.  Una cosa es entretener a la fanaticada en el parque con todos los shows, espectaculos, etc. pero creanme que eso no es lo que los televidentes buscan.  Otra indicacion de que este equipo ha tomado la identidad y la personalidad del nuevo parque . . . una estructura bella, con mucho “South Beach”, pero sin corazon y alma.

Me quedo con mi seleccion de Mike Trout de los Angelinos como MVP y Novato del año en la liga americana.  Que clase de talento!  Aroldis Chapman esta dominando como cerrador en Cincinnati, pero los Rojos siguen con la idea de convertirlo en un abridor en el futoro.  Que clase de estupidez seria eso.  Siguendo con el tema de los cerradores, Craig Kimbrel de los Bravos de Atlanta esta teniendo otra temporada monstruosa, y le va a dar a RA Dickey y a Gio Gonzalez una gran competencia para el Cy Young de la liga nacional.

After an exhausting investigation, it was determined that Penn State University “concealed critical facts” about child abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky from 1998 to 2011, a coverup that included the university president, athletic director, and head football coach Joe Paterno.  The lack of so-called “institutional control” is dwarfed by the lack of ethics, compassion, and human decency shown by these university officials that were in a position to put a stop to these horrendous acts from the beginning.  We can only hope that everyone has learned from this in order to prevent something like this from happening again. 

The National League pounded Justin Verlander and the American League 8-0 in the 83rd edition of the MLB All Star Game to win home field advantage for the World Series in October.  Melky Cabrera was selected as the MVP in the game, and is just adding zeroes and years to his new contract after his one-year deal with the SF Giants expires after this season. 

After a disappointing and underwhelming first half of the season, the Marlins look to get  off on the right foot this weekend at Marlins Park with a four game series against the first place Washington Nationals. (More on the Nats in a minute).  The Fish have underperformed up to now, with a 41-44 record, comparable to last year at the break when they were 43-48.  With the exception of Giancarlo Stanton and possibly Omar Infante, the Marlins have been pathetic offensively.  Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, and Logan Morrison have been mediocre at best, Gaby Sanchez and John Buck have been awful, and Emilio Bonifacio has been injured most of the first half.  With Stanton ready to miss about a month after knee surgery, the Fish need Boni to return, and hope that the surprising Justin Ruggiano keeps it up.  I still believe that the acquisition of Carlos Lee was a waste of time, and the team would have been better served by moving Logan Morrison to first base, where he will probably end up.  Hopefully, Gaby will figure out what is wrong, and Reyes, Ramirez, Morrison and Buck pick up the pace.  The starting pitching has been OK, but manager Ozzie Guillen needs to see more consistency from Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, and Carlos Zambrano.  Josh Johnson is beginning to look like the JJ of old, and Mark Buehrle has been very good.  The starters need to get better.  Closer Heath Bell has blown six save opportunities this  year so far, but he is not the only problem in the pen.  The Fish lost five of those games in which Bell blew up, and in eleven total implosions, the team managed to win four out the remaining five games.  Bell has to go back to being what he was the prior three seasons, saving 132 out of 146 opportunities, with an ERA of 2.36 and holding opposing hitters to under a .220 bating average.  This season so far, Bell has saved 19 out of 25 opportunities, has an ERA of 6.75, and opposing hitters are pounding him for a .307 batting average.  Who could have imagined that we would be looking forward to the return of Juan Carlos Oviedo, the artist formerly known as Leo Nuñez?  

Winning baseball teams establish an identity, be it after their manager, years of success and tradition, or with the example provided by the veterans on a club.  The 1997 Marlins, for example, had Jim Leyland and veteran leadership provided by the likes of Bobby Bonilla, Darren Daulton, Jim Eisenrieich, Kevin Brown, and Devon White.  The 2003 World Champs had Jack McKeon and great clubhouse and on-field guys like Pudge Rodriguez, Mike Lowell, Jeff Conine, Lenny Harris, and Gerald Williams.  I don’t see this year’s edition of the Marlins having the personality of Ozzie Guillen yet, and there is no veteran presence in the clubhouse that comes close to resembling Daulton, Eisenreich, Brown, Pudge, or Lowell.  It seems to me that this ballclub has taken on the identity of the new stadium . . . a beautiful structure with a lot of glitz and a lot of “South Beach”, but with no heart and soul.  There is still a noticeable rift between the front office and the manager and coaches as it pertains to the direction this team is going to take.  

Some first half surprises?  The Washington Nationals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago White Sox, and the LA Dodgers leading their respective divisions.  The rebirth of the Baltimore Orioles, the Cleveland Indians, and the New York Mets, who find themselves in the thick of things.  On the negative side, the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies in last place at this point are also things I did not expect to see.

Individual players that are raising eyebrows include Mike Trout of the LA Angels of Anaheim, who has my vote for both Rookie of the Year AND Most Valuable Player in the American League.  I told you about him before the Angels brought him up.  Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been as good as anyone in baseball so far this season, and is there a better story than RA Dickey of the New York Mets?  How about Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals, who has made St. Louis forget Albert Pujols.  Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals, AJ Burnett (remember him?) and James McDonald of the Pirates, Chris Sale of the White Sox, Yu Darvish of the Rangers, have excelled on the mound so far.  Josh Hamilton of the Rangers and Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays are unstoppable, and David Wright of the Mets and Melky Cabrera are tearing it up in the NL.

The 2012 version of the Dream Team take the court tonight for the first time against the Dominican Republic in an exhibition game.  Is this 2012 version better than the original dream team of 1992?  I don’t think so, Cisco.  Speaking of the US team, wouldn’t it have been a really good idea for the team uniforms to have been made in the USA, not in China? 

The Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets have ended negotiations on a trade for Dwight Howard.  Looks like that one will not happen.  Could Howard end up a Laker, maybe a Hawk, or a Rocket?  The malcontent center rejected an offer from the new GM of the Magic to essentially start over and try and come to an agreement.  In my opinion, it has gotten so ugly that I sincerely doubt that Howard will play for the Magic next season.  The inmates are running the asylum.

Despues de una larga y detallada investigacion, se determino que la universidad de Penn State “cubrio y escondio los hechos” de abuso sexual contra niños por el ex-coach asistente de football Jerry Sandusky del año 1998 al 2011, un intento de cubrir y esconder los hechos por el presidente de la universidad, el director atletico, y el coach Joe Paterno.  La falta de “control institucional” no es nada, junto a la falta de etica, decencia humana, y compasion que demonstraron todos estos individuos que se encontraban en posicion de ponerle fin a estos actos horribles desde el principio.  Lo unico que podemos esperar es que todo el mundo aprendio de esto para prevenir de que algo tan horrendo vuelva a suceder en el futuro.   

La liga Nacional apabullo a Justin Verlander y a la liga Americana 8-0 en el juego de las estrellas el martes.  Con la victoria, la liga Naiconal tendra la ventaja en casa para la serie mundial esta temporada.  Melky Cabrera fue seleccionado como el jugador mas valioso del juego, lo que le agregara ceros y años a un nuevo contrato que seguramente va a recibir despues de esta temporada.   

Despues de una primera mitad de la temporada que debe de ser categorizada como un fracaso, los Marlins trataran de arrancar la segunda mitad con un buen paso en una serie de cuatro juegos este fin de semana en el Marlins Park contra los Washington Nationals.  Los Peces llegaron al juego de las estrellas con una marca de 41-44, bastante parecida a la marca de 43-48 del año pasado.  Con la excepcion de Giancarlo Stanton y posiblemente Omar Infante, este equipo ha sido horrible en la ofensiva.  Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, y Logan Morrison han sido del monton, Gaby Sanchez y John Buck han sido horribles, y Emilio Bonifacio se paso la gran parte de la temporada en la lista de los lesionados.  Con la triste realidad de que Stanton va a fallar por lo menos un mes despues de una operacion de la rodilla, los Marlins necesitan que Boni regrese en gran forma, y que la gran sorpresa, Justin Ruggiano continue como llego.  Sigo pensando que la adquisicion de Carlos Lee fue perder el tiempo, y que debian de haber movido a Logan Morrison para la primera base, donde probablemente va a terminar en un futuro no muy lejano.  Ojala que Gaby descruba y pueda resolver los problemas que ha tenido esta temporada con el bate, y que Reyes, Ramirez, Morrison, y Buck  es espabilen.  EL pitcheo abridor ha sido “OK”, pero el manager Ozzie Guillen necesita mas consistencia de parte de Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, y Carlos Zambrano.  Josh Johnson se esta empezando a parecer al JJ que todos conociamos, y Mark Buehrle ha estado muy bien.  Los cerradores como conjunto tienen que mejorar para quitarle un poco de presion y responsabilidad al bullpen.  El cerrador Heath Bell ha botado seis oportunidades de salvar juegos esta temporada, pero el no es el unico problema en el bullpen.  Los Marlns perdieron cinco de esos seis encuentros que Bell despercidio, y en once juegos en total en que Bell ha explotado, el equipo asi y todo logro ganar cuatro de los otros cinco juegos.  Bell tiene que volver a ser el pitcher que fue los ultimos tres años, donde salvo 132 de 146 oportunidades, con un ERA de 2.36 y los bateadores contrarios batearon menos de .220 contra el.  Comparando esos numeros con los del 2012, donde Bell ha salvado 19 de 25 juegos, con un promedio de efectividad de 6.75 y un promedio de bateo de .307 por los contrarios.  Quien se podia pensar que estariamos extrañando a Juan Carlos Oviedo, el artista anteriormente conocido por Leo Nuñez?

Sorpresas en la primera mitad de la temporada en las grandes ligas?  Los Washington Nationals, los Piratas de Pittsburgh, las Medias Blancas de Chicago, Dodgers de Los Angeles todos se encuentran en primer lugar en sus divisiones.  El renacer de los Orioles del Baltimore, los Indios de Cleveland, y los Metropolitanos de Nueva York, que se encuentran en la comida.  En el lado negativo, el que las Medias Rotas de Boston y los Phillies de Philadelphia esten en ultimo lugar tambien me sorprende.  

Jugadores que me tienen fascinado hasta esta temporada incluyen a a Mike Trout de lod Angelinos, que tiene mi voto para MVP y Novato del Año en la liga Americana.  Se los vengo diciendo hace rato.  Andrew McCutchen de los Piratas del Pittsburgh ha sido tan bueno como cualquier otro jugador en el beisbol esta temporada.  Hay mejor historia este año que la de RA Dickey de los Mets?  Que tal Carlos Beltran de los Cardenales, que ha logrado que a la ciudad de San Luis se le olvide a Alberto Pujols.  Gio Gonzalez y Stephen Strasburg de los Nationals, AJ Burnett (se acuerdan de el?) y James McDonald de los Pirates, Chris Sale de las Medias Blancas, y Yu Darvish de los Rangers, entre otros, han brillado en la lomita esta temporada.  Los pitchers en la liga americana no han encontrado la forma de controlar ni a Josh Hamilton de los Rangers y tampoco a Jose Bautista de los Blue Jays.  David Wright de los Mets y Melky Cabrera ambos estan partiendo la bola en la liga nacional.

Pasando al basketball, los Miami Heat oficialmente le dieron la bienvenida a Ray Allen y a Rashard Lewis ayer.  Me encantan estas dos adquisiciones.  

La version del Equipo de Ensueño del 2012 tomara la cancha esta noche por primera vez en un juego de exhibicion contra el equipo de la Republica Dominicana.  La version del 2012 es mejor el equipo de Ensueño del 1992?  Bajense de esa nube, y vuelvan a la realidad.  Hablando del equipo olimpico, no hubiera sido mejor idea que los uniformes fueran hechos aqui en Estados Unidos, en vez de en la China? 

Los Orlando Magic y los Brooklyn Nets han cerrado las puertas a un posible cambio que hubiera enviado a Dwight Howard a los Nets.  Por ahora, este cambio no se va a dar.  Pudiera terminar Howard en Los Angeles con los Lakers?  En Houston con los Rockets?  En Atlanta con los Hawks?  El desagradable de Howard rechazo una oferta del nuevo gerente general de los Magic de borron y cuenta nueva para tratar de mantenerlo en Orlando.   En mi opinion, la cosa esta tan fea entre los Magic y Howard que dudo mucho que Howard vaya a jugar en Orlando esta proxima temporada.  Los locos estan a cargo del manicomio.

By the way, Prince Fielder won the Home Run hitting contest last night, his second win in this event.  Robinson Cano was booed unmercifully by the KC fans, and proceeded to get shutout after wining last year’s event.  The KC fans were upset that Cano didn’t select Royal Billy Butler to participate.  On that note, here’s a suggestion - make sure that a player from the team hosting the game is selected to participate.  End of discussion.  

The Marlins have no representation in tonight’s game, after Mike Stanton had knee surgery a couple of days  ago.  Probably a good thing.  The rest of the players on this team have all under achieved, and don’t deserve to be there.  Hopefully they watch the game and it motivates them to be there next year.   

The Baseball All Star game is the best all star game of all the sports.  The memorable moments from these games have made and will continue to make history.  Think about it . . . what memorable moment is there from any NFL Pro Bowl?  NBA All Star game?  

I guess I should make a pick for tonight’s game.  I’ll go with the American League.  

In NBA news, after reaching an agreement with free agent guard Ray Allen on a two-year deal, the Heat met with forward Rashard Lewis and are waiting for his decision.  The big NBA news is the proposed four-team trade that would send malcontent center Dwight Howard from Orlando to the Brooklyn Nets.  The teams include Orlando, Brooklyn, the LA Clippers, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The trade is complicated, because in the NBA, you have to trade dollar for dollar.  The specifics out there are Howard would go to the Nets with Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon, and Earl Clark.  The Magic would receive Brook Lopez, Luke Walton, Damion James, Shelden Williams, Armon Johnson and three first round picks, two from the Nets and one from the LA Clippers.  The Clippers would receive MarShon Brooks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers would receive Kris Humphries, Quentin Richardson, Sundiata Gaines, a first round pick from the Nets, and $3 million in cash.  ESPN is reporting that the Charlotte Bobcats could end up replacing the Cavaliers in this trade.

Prince Fielder gano el concurso de los jonrones anoche, su segunda victoria en este evento.  Robinson Cano fue abuchado muchisimo por la fanaticada de KC, y fue blanqueado este año, despues de ganar el concurso del año pasado.  La fanaticada de Kansas City estaban disgustados que Cano no selecciono a Billy Butler de los Royals para que participara en el concurso.  Una idea para el futuro - en el futuro, siempre seleccionen a un jugador del equipo de la ciudad donde se juega el juego de las estrellas.  Punto y aparte.  

Los Marlins no tienen representacion en el juego de esta noche, despues que Giancarlo Stanton fue sometido a una operacion de rodilla hace un par de dias.  Buena idea que no hay ningun Marlin en el juego.  El resto de los jugadores del equipo han sido un fracaso esta primera mitad y no merecen estar en Kansas City.  Ojala miren el juego por television y se motiven para el juego del año  que viene.

El juego de las estrellas es el mejor evento de estrellas de todos los deportes.  Las memorias de estos juegos siempre han hecho y seguiran haciendo historia.  Piensenlo bien . . . que momento significante recordamos de un Pro Bowl de la NFL?  De un juego de las estrellas de la NBA?

The Marlins salvaged a split of their four game series with the Brewers with a 4-0 win yesterday.  Mark Buehrle continues to impress me, with a 3.25 ERA to go with a W-L record of 8-8, which should be better with run support and bullpen support.  “El Caballo”, Carlos Lee, made a good first impression yesterday, 3-2 with a double.  I hope I am totally wrong, but I don’t believe that this was the move that the Fish needed to make.  Don’t get me wrong . . . Gaby had to be replaced and sent down to straighten out whatever ails him, but there were other players out there I would have targeted.  Kevin Youkilis comes to mind.  With Lee, you are getting a guy way past his prime, a guy that is out of shape, cannot play the field, and has not been producing the power numbers he had a few years ago.  Again, I hope I’m wrong and he has a born-again experience reuniting with Ozzie Guillen.  

Giancarlo Stanton is still nursing a sore knee, and hopes to be able to play in the all-star game.  Maybe I’m a little old-fashioned, but I would rather he was looking forward to returning to the Marlins lineup first.  The Fish are in St. Louis this weekend for a three game series in over 100 degree temperature against the St. Louis Cardinals, a team they can’t beat.  A sweep would put the Marlins above .500 at the all-star break.  

As we reach the halfway point of the season, who is not surprised that the Chicago White Sox, the Washington Nationals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the PIttsburgh Pirates find themselves in first place in their respective divisions?  

In NBA news, free agent guard Ray Allen met with Pat Riley and Erik Spolstra yesterday and later went out to dinner with them, Alonzo Mourning and Heat CEO Nick Arison.  I am hearing that the Heat are offering their maximum annual salary exemption, $3.1 million, for three years.  It looks like the Boston Celtics are the only other team in the mix, and have offered Allen a 2 year, $12 million contract to return to Boston.  Playing time, or lack thereof, may be the deciding factor.  The team will be meeting with forward Rashard Lewis sometime this weekend.  

A few point guards on the move - Jeremy Lin has signed an offer sheet with the Houston Rockets, Jason Terry is now a Celtic, Jason Kidd is going to the New York Knicks, and Steve Nash is joining Kobe Bryant with the Lakers.  The Knicks are expected, however, to match the Rockets offer sheet to Lin.  Still waiting to see if the Orlando Magic pull the trigger on a Dwight Howard trade.  Just thinking out loud . maybe the Steve Nash signing with the Lakers keeps Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol on the team.    

  

A connecticut family is selling a home run ball that Lou Gehrig hit in the 1928 World Series.  The Iron Horse connected of fellow hall of famer Grover Cleveland Alexander with Babe Ruth on base.  The ball is expected to fetch between $100K and $200K, and the money will be used to pay their son’s medical school debt.

Los Marlins se escaparon de Milwaukee dividiendo honores en la serie de cuatro juegos con los Brewers con una victoria de 4-0 ayer.  Mark Buehrle me sigue impresionando, con un ERA de 3.25.  Su record de 8-8 podria ser mucho mejor, con apoyo ofensivo y apoyo del  bullpen.  “El Caballo”, Carlos Lee, impresiono ayer en su debut, bateando de 3-2 con un tubeis.  Ojala yo este totalmente equivocado, pero no creo que esta era la mejor movida para los Peces.  No confundan la gimnasia con la magnesia, pero existen otros peloteros que yo preferia traer a Miami.  Kevin Youkilis, por ejemplo.  Con Lee, tienen un jugador que ya vio sus mejores momentos, un jugador fuera de condicion fisica que no tiene posicion en el  terreno, y no ha estado produciendo los numeros de poder que tenia hace unos años.  De nuevo, espero estar totalmente equivocado, y que Lee disfrute de un renacer completo al reunirse de nuevo con Ozzie Guillen.  

Giancarlo Stanton sigue batallando una lesion en la rodilla, y espera poder jugar en el juego de las estrellas y participar en el concurso de jonrones.  No se ustedes, pero yo preferiria que el niño hombre estuviera mas preocupado en regresar a la alineacion de los Marlins primero.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA ! ! !  

Ozzie Guillen lit into his ballclub last night after a 13-12 loss to the Brewers.  The Fish managed to erase a seven-run deficit and took a 12-11 lead in the 10th inning, but Aramis Ramirez ended the game with a two-run homer off closer Heath Bell, who blew his fifth save of the season.  Plenty of blame to go around, and although the easiest thing would be to lay it all on Bell, the rest of the pitchers gave up 10 runs.  The Fish also commited 3 errors in the field, and you just can’t do that day in and day out and expect to win.  I hope that Guillen’s temper tantrum and explosion last night serves the purpose of waking up this team.  They are too good to be playing like this.  

The Yankees still cannot find a way to win in Tropicana Field, losing their ninth straight contest in St. Petersburg to the Rays, 7-4.  The Yankees have lost four out of their last six overall, after winning 15 of 18.

Good move by the National League powers that be in naming Chipper Jones to the All Star team to replace the injured Matt Kemp, in what will be his last season.  By the way, Chipper is hitting .313 this season, so this is not just a ceremonial selection.  He deserves to be there, just as he deserves to get into Cooperstown in five years.  To celebrate yesterday, he went 5-5 with 4 RBI.  

Local product Yasmani Grandal, enjoying his first season in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres, had three home runs in his first 14 at bats, his only three hits to kick off his major league career.  That streak ended yesterday, when he hit a single in five trips to the plate.  El catcher cubano Yasmani Grandal, que esta disfrutando de su primera temporada en las grandes ligas con los Padres de San Diego, conecto tres jonrones en sus primeros 14 turnos al bate, sus unicos tres hits.  Anoche, se acabo esa rachita, despues de batear un sencillo en cinco turnos.  

In NBA news, point guard Deron Williams decided to return to the Nets as they move to Brooklyn.  Williams, Gerald Wallace, and Joe Johnson make a very interesting “big 3” and sources tell me that they have not yet given up on trying to trade for Dwight Howard.  Speaking of Howard, the LA Lakers have reared their ugly head and have supposedly offered Andrew Bynum and others for Howard.  If nobody gets Howard this year, look out for the Atlanta Hawks next year.  Tons of cap room and Howard is from the area.  The Heat will be meeting with shooting guard Ray Allen tomorrow.

Feliz Cumpleaños a los Estados Unidos de America ! ! !

Ozzie Guillen se dio banquete anoche despues del juego, arracandole la tira del pellejo a su equipo completo.  Los Marlns lograron borrar un deficit de siete carreras y se fueron arriba en el decimo inning, 12-11, antes de que Aramis Ramirez enviara a toda la concurrencia para la casa con un jonron con uno en base en la parte baja del decimo contra el cerrador Heath Bell.  Lo mas facil fuera echarle el muerto completo a Bell, pero el resto de los pitchers permitieron 10 carreras y los Peces cometieron tres errores en el terreno.  Asi no se puede jugar si esperan ganar.  Espero que la explosion de Guillen espabile al equipo, los baje de la nube y vuelvan aqui a la realidad.  Este equipo tiene demasiado talento para estar jugando de esta forma.  

Los Yankees siguen sin poder ganar en el Tropicana Field, donde anoche perdieron por novena vez consecutiva contra los Tampa Bay Rays, 7-4.  Los Yankees han perdido cuatro de sus ultimos seis encuentros, despues de ganar 15 de 18.

Buena movida por la liga nacional en nombrar a Chipper Jones al juego de las estrellas para reemplazar a Matt Kemp.  Entre parentesis, la seleccion de Jones no es un acto de ceremonia, ya que Chipper esta bateando .313 en esta temporada, que sera la ultima temporada en su carrera.  Jones merece estar en el juego, al igual que merece ir al salon de la fama en Cooperstown dentro de unos cinco años.  Para celebrar ayer, Chipper se fue de 5-5 y remolco cuatro carreras.  

El catcher cubano y talento local de aqui de Miami, Yasmani Grandal, esta disfrutando de su primera temporada en las grandes ligas con los Padres de San Diego, y conecto tres jonrones en sus primeros 14 turnos al bate, sus unicos tres hits.  Anoche, se acabo esa rachita, despues de batear un sencillo en cinco turnos.  No han habido muchos peloteros que pueden decir que sus primeros tres hits en las grandes ligas fueron jonrones.

En noticias de la NBA, el armador Deron Williams decidio regresar a los Nets, que se mudan para Brooklyn esta proxima temporada.  Williams se une con Gerald Wallace y Joe Johnson para formar un trio muy interesante, y fuentes me informan que no se han rendido en tratar de obtener al center Dwight Howard en un cambio.  Hablando de Howard, los Lakers de Los Angeles lucen estar metiendo la cuchareta en la sopa y dicen las malas lenguas que estan ofreciendole a Andrew Bynum y otros jugadores a los Orlando Magic para obtener a Howard.  Si no logran cambiar a Howard esta temporada, cuidado con los Atlanta Hawks, que tienen muchisimo espacio debajo del tope salarial para traer a Howard y hasta a Chris Paul, que seran agentes libres el año que viene.  Los Heat siguen planeando reunirse con el franco tirador Ray Allen mañana jueves.

The Marlins blew a 5-2 lead yesterday, and lost to the Brewers 6-5.  Not a good day  for Carlos Zambrano, who continues to be his own worst enemy on the mound.  In his last four games, covering 19 total innings, Z has walked 19 hitters.  He has given up 19 runs in that time.  He is pitching his way out of the rotation.  With Wade LeBlanc getting the call-up this week to replace the injured Edward Mujica on the roster, it shouldn’t come as a complete shock if LeBlanc replaces Zambrano in the rotation, at least for a couple of starts.  In other Marlins news, Emilio Bonifacio is ready to begin a rehab assignment in Jupiter with the Class-A Hammerheads tomorrow (Wednesday).  If everything goes well, Boni should return to the club right after the all-star break.  Juan Carlos Oviedo, the artist formerly known as Leo Nuñez, will be eligible to return to the big club on July 23rd.  

Dontrelle Willis announced his retirement from baseball yesterday.  The D-Train played for the Marlins from 2003 to 2007, when he was traded to Detroit with Miguel Cabrera for no one in particular.  Willis was one of the most beloved players to ever put on a Marlins uniform.  I wish him well and it is a real shame that he didn’t retire a Marlin.  

The Marlins continue their road trip with a 4:10pm game  this afternoon, and they will not have Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup today.  The man-child needs to rest a tender knee today, and should be back tomorrow.  After today, the Fish have two more games vs the Brewers, before moving on to St. Louis to square off against the Cardinals this weekend.  They will return to Marlins Park for a four-game series against the Washington Nationals starting on friday, the 13th of July, after the all-star break.    

The Yankees lost yesterday in St. Petersburg, their eight consecutive loss against the Rays in Tropicana Field.  The Yankees still have the biggest division lead, six games, in baseball, even after losing Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia to the DL last week.  CC should be back right after the break, but look for the team to make some sort of move to bolster their starting rotation.  Don’t look for that guy to be Zack Grienke.  If the Brewers finally decide to move him, a more likely scenario would be Atlanta, if only for the rest of 2012.

As I mentioned yesterday, the Brooklyn Nets are busy, busy, busy.  The Nets obtained Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks (more on them in a second), they are aggressively pursuing point guard Deron Williams, and they are still working on reaching a deal with the Orlando Magic to get Dwight Howard.  If they are unable to get Howard, the Atlanta Hawks have put themselves in a VERY GOOD situation to get the disgruntled center, as well as point guard Chris Paul, both of them would be free agents after this coming season.  After trading Johnson, they are over $40 million under next year’s cap, and could easily clear more space if needed by trading Al Horford.  This is something to keep your eyes on.  The Heat have a scheduled meeting with shooting guard Ray Allen on thursday.  The Heat have also had conversations with free agent Rashard Lewis.  The 6 foot 10 inch forward played in only 28 games last year due to a knee injury.

A little Miami Dolphin talk today.  The team announced that 15 team workouts will be open to the public when training camp opens on Friday, July 27th.  You’re going to have to get out of bed early to see them.  Twelve of the fifteen will start at 8:00 AM at the team’s training facility in Davie.  Seating will be available to the first 2,000 fans and parking is free.  No Dolphins talk would be complete without the question - Who’s going to be the starting QB on September 9th when they open the regular season against the Houston Texans - David Garrard, Matt Moore, or Ryan Tannehill?

Los Marlins  desperdiciaron una ventaja de 5-2 ayer, y perdieron contra los Brewers 6-5.  Carlos Zambrano sigue siendo su propio peor enemigo.  En sus ultimos cuatro juegos, cubriendo un total de 19 innings, Zambrano ha permitido 19 carreras y ha regalado 19 bases por bolas.  El solo se esta buscando una desgracia.  Los Peces subieron a Wade LeBlanc  de las ligas menores para reemplazar a Edward Mujica, y no nos debe tomar de sorpresa si LeBlanc reemplaza a Zambrano en la rotacion, por lo menos para un par de turnos.  En otras noticias de los Peces, Emilio Bonifacio comienza el proceso de rehabilitacion con los Jupiter Hammerheads mañana miercoles.  Si todo va bien, El Boni debe regresar al equipo despues del juego de las estrellas.  Juan Carlos Oviedo, el artista antes conocido como Leo Nuñez, es elegible para regresar al equipo el dia 23 del corriente mes.  

Dontrelle Willis anuncio su retiro del beisbol ayer.  El D-Train pitcheo con los Marlins desde el 2003 al 2007, cuando fue cambiado a los Tigres del Detroit junto a Miguel Cabrera por nadie en particular.  Willis sigue siendo uno de los peloteros mas queridos con el equipo.   Le deseo lo mejor, y considero que es una lastima que no se pudo retirar como un Marlin.  

Los Peces tienen un juego esta tarde a las 4:10, y no tendran a Giancarlo Stanton en la alineacion.  El niño hombre esta descansando la rodilla hoy, y se espera que regrese mañana.  Despues de hoy, los Marlins tienen dos juegos con los Brewers, antes de viajar a San Luis para una serie de tres juegos este fin de semana contra los Cardenales.  Regresan al Marlins Park para una serie de cuatro juegos contra los Washington Nationals comenzando el viernes 13 de julio, despues del descanso del juego de las estrellas.  

Los Yankees perdieron ayer en St. Petersburg, su octava derrota consecutiva contra los Rays en el Tropicana Field.  Los Yankees disfrutan de la ventaja mas amplia en su division en las grandes ligas, seis juegos, aunque perdieron a Andy Pettitte y a CC Sabathia con lesiones la semana pasada.  Sabathia debe de estar listo para regresar la semana que viene despues del juego de las estrellas, pero pienso que el equipo va a hacer algun tipo de movida para ayudar a la rotacion de los abridores.  No creo que esa ayuda se llame Zack Grienke.  Si los Milwaukee Brewers deciden hacer un cambio con Grienke, un destino mas probable seria Atlanta con los Bravos, aunque sea solamente por el resto del 2012.  

Pasando a la NBA, como les mencione ayer, los Brooklyn Nets estan bien agresivos. Los Nets obtuvieron a Joe Johnson de los Atlanta Hawks (un poco mas sobre los Hawks en un segundo), estan persiguiendo al armador Deron Williams, and siguen tratando de llegar a un acuerdo con los Orlando Magic para obtner al center malcriado Dwight Howard.  Si no logran obtener a Howard, los Atlanta Hawks se han puesto en una gran posicion para negociar con  Howard y con el armador Chris Paul, ambos agentes libres despues de la temporada que viene.  Despues de completar el cambio de Johnson, Atlanta se queda mas de $40 millones por debajo del tope salarial del año que viene, y pudieran mejorar ese numero cambiando a Al Horford.  Eso es algo para seguir vigilando.  Los Heat, por su parte, tienen una reunion el jueves con el franco tirador Ray Allen, y tambien han tenido conversaciones con el agente libre Rashard Lewis.  El delantero de 6 pies 10 pulgadas jugo en solamente 28 juegos la temporada pasada debido a una lesion en la rodilla.

Cerramos hoy con un poquito de conversacion de los Miami Dolphins.  El equipo anuncio que 15 de sus practicas van a ser abiertas al publico cuando abran el campo de entrenamiento el viernes 27 de julio.  Para verlos, van a tener que levantarse temprano, ya que doce de las practicas todas en Davie, arrancan a las 8 de la mañana.  Los primeros 2,000 fanaticos tendran asientos a su disposicion, y el estacionamiento es gratis.  Ninguna conversacion de los Dolphins estuviera completa sin la pregunta - Quien va a ser el quarterback titular cuando los Fins abran la temporada el dia 9 de septiembre en Houston contra los Texans - David Garrard, Matt Moore, o Ryan Tannehill?

EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!  The Marlins SWEPT their 3-game weekend series against the Phillies, to cement the Phillies position in the cellar in the NL East.  The Fish finished the month of June with eight victories, four of them against the Phils.  The Marlins hit the road this week with four games in Milwaukee against the Brewers, and three against the Cardinals in St. Louis.  Hopefully,  July will be better.  Justin Ruggiano has been a pleasant surprise.  Look for him to stay in the outfield when Emilio Bonifacio returns, which would allow Logan Morrison to move to first base to replace Gaby Sanchez, who is either Lost in Space or in The Twilight Zone.  If the Marlins are going to compete for a playoff spot, they need to get a lot more production from the 6, 7, and 8 hitters in the lineup.  Good second halves from Reyes, Hanley, and the pitching staff would also help.  Lots of excitement and anticipation with the selection of Giancarlo Stanton to the all star team and the home run hitting contest.  Should be interesting to see what the man-child does.  

All Star game selections are out.  There are always too many bad decisions made on selecting the starting lineups and the rosters.  I’ll concentrate on the starters today.  My AL starters would be:  Joe Mauer at catcher, Prince Fielder at first, Robinson Cano at 2B,   Derek Jeter at SS, and Miguel Cabrera at third.  My outfield would be Jose Bautista, Josh Hamilton, and Mike Trout, the DH would be David Ortiz.  In the NL, Carlos Ruiz would be behind the plate, Joey Votto at first, Jose Altuve at second, Starlin Castro would be the SS, and David Wright at third base.  In the outfield, Melky Cabrera, Andrew McCutchen, and Ryan Braun, with Carlos Beltran at DH.  We’ll discuss the rest of the bad decisions during the week.   

The NBA free agent frenzy is beginning, and the Heat are very interested in shooting guard Ray Allen, but they can only offer him the $3.1 million veteran mid level exception.  The Celtics, who reached a contract agreement already with Kevin Garnett, are willing to pay Allen $6 million per year to keep him, and Memphis has an offer of $5 million per year on the table.  The Atlanta Hawks and the LA Clippers also have interest.  Point guard Steve Nash has a three year $36 million offer from the Toronto Raptors, so he looks out of the question as well.    

The Brooklyn Nets are meeting with PG Deron Williams today and they supposedly are the only team that C Dwight Howard wants to be traded to.  At this point, they are sitting pretty.   

Spain crushed Italy to win their second consecutive Euro Cup Championship, making them the first team ever to put two Euro Cup Championships (2008 and 2012) around a World Cup title (2010).  

In golf, Tiger Woods won his third tournament of the year,  the AT&T National.  His win was the 74th in his career, passing Jack Nicklaus for second place, and Woods is 8 wins behind the legendary Sam Snead.

ULTIMO MINUTO!  Los Marlins barrieron su serie de tres juegos este fin de semana contra los Phillies, asegurando que los Phillies estaran en el sotano mas tiempo.  Los Peces terminaron el mes de junio con ocho victorias, cuatro de esos triunfos contra Philadelphia.  Esperemos que el mes de juio sea mejor.  El equipo sale de viaje, con cuatro juegos en Milwaukee contra los Brewers y tres partidos en San Luis contra los Cardenales, antes del juego de las estrellas.  El jardinero Justin Ruggiano ha sido una gran sorpresa, y estoy anticipando que se quedara en los jardines cuando regrese Emilio Bonifacio, abriendole la puerta a Logan Morrison para que se mude para la primera base, donde remplazaria a Gaby Sanchez, que esta perdido en el espacio y no le da a un globo con una guitarra en este momento.  Si los Marlins van a competir para ir a los playoffs, van a necesitar mas produccion de su sexto, septimo y octavo bate.  Buenas segunda mitad de Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, y los lanzadores ayudarian bastante tambien.  Mucha anticipacion y embullo con la seleccion de Giancarlo Stanton al juego de las estrellas y para el concurso de jonrones.  Va a ser bien interesante ver lo que hace el niño  hombre.
