The Marlins and the Phillies open up a three game series at Marlins Park today, both teams battling to get out of the cellar in the NL East.  Who would have thunk it?  Fish need to start putting it all together.  A lot of season left, but it hasn’t been what we expected to see so far.
The SF Giants took over sole possession of first place in the NL West.  Madison Baumgarner threw a one-hit shutout at the Cincinnati Reds yesterday, the fourth consecutive shutout for SF.  Tonight, Matt Cain tries to extend that streak and he’s looking for his ninth consecutive victory.
Derek Jeter tied Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th place on the all time hits list with 3,184 hits.  Next on the list is Nap Lajoie in 12th place with 3,252.  If the captain stays healthy, he should pass him before the end of the season.  The Yankees lost yesterday 4-3, on a Dayan Viciedo 3-run homer in the ninth inning.  Jeter almost passed Ripken in the bottom of the ninth but Alex Rios made a great play in right field, banging into the wall to preserve the victory for the White Sox.
The LA Dodgers came to terms with Cuban outfield prospect Yasel Puig, giving the 20-year old a 7-year, $42 million contract.  A lot of different opinions on this signing among major league scouts, but I still find it crazy that players that haven’t played a single game of professional baseball get this kind of contract.  Adding to the discord among scouts were reports that Puig was out of shape for workouts in Mexico, his physical skills and arm don’t come close to major league level, and Puig has barely played outside the Cuban league, not giving scouts the opportunity to see Puig in a more competitive environment.  In fact, the Dodgers have NEVER seen Puig play in a game.  The new rules for signing international players go into effect next week, so this may be the last exorbitant signing we see.  Yoenis Cespedes signed a 4 year, $36 million contract with the Oakland A’s in February, and last month, the Cubs gave Jorge Soler a 9-year, $30 million contract.
The Miami Heat traded out of the first round of the NBA draft yesterday, sending their pick to Philadelphia for a second round pick and the 76ers first round pick next season.  The Heat used the second round pick to select LSU forward Justin Hamilton, a seven foot junior, that will probably end up playing in Europe next season.  Bottom line, the players they liked were gone by the time their turn came up, and they decided to not tie themselves up with having to give a rookie a guaranteed contract for next year.  The term Pat Riley uses is “future flexibility”.
I love watching the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, and we had an early surprise yesterday when Rafael Nadal was eliminated in the second round by Lukas Rosol from Czechoslovakia.  Nadal  had reached the Wimbledon finals the last five times he played there.
In the European Championship Soccer final, it will be a clash between Italy and Spain for all the marbles.  Italy defeated Germany yesterday to advance as they try to unseat last year’s champions and win the title for the first time since 1968.
I’ll close out today’s blog by bringing you this oldie but goodie.  Yesterday marked the 15-year anniversary of the original zombie attack, the Mike Tyson-Evander Holifield ear-biting encounter during their world championship fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Time flies when you’re having fun!
Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.  Have a great weekend and I hope to see you here again on Monday!

  1. I like your blog idea - aside from the sports insights, I get to practice reading in Spanish - my Spanish reading skills are the equivalent of Marlins 5-8 hitters
