The Marlins look to be in a hurry to end the season and go on vacation. They are ending a nightmarish 2012 season appropriately, losing 11 out of their last 13 games. Yesterday, they were dominated by the Phillies and Cole Hamels, who allowed 1 run and 5 hits while striking out 8 in seven innings. Nathan Eovaldi pitched well enough, allowing only 3 runs and six hits and striking out seven in his six innings of work, but you usually don’t win when you only score one run. Phillies won 4-1 to take two out of three in the weekend series. The season will mercifully come to a close this week, after the Fish host the Metropolitans in a three-game series. Tonight at 7 pm, Josh Johnson takes on Jeurys Familia; tomorrow at 7 pm, Jacob Turner will face RA Dickey, and on Wednesday, Mark Buehrle is slated to go, but that decision will be finalized in the next day or so. Jeremy Hafner will start for the Mets on Wednesday, first pitch for the last game of the year will be at 4 pm. Plenty of good seats available for this series.
As we reach the last three games of the season, there is still a lot to be determined as we sort out the playoff possibilities. In the American League, the Yankees and the Orioles remain tied for first place with three games to play in the AL East, and both have clinched a postseason appearance. The Yankees close out their season against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, while the Orioles travel to St. Petersburg for a series against the Tampa Bay Rays. In the AL west, Texas is in as well, and the A’s have a magic number of one to reach the playoffs. The division is far from settled, as the Rangers lead is two games over Oakland, and they play each other in a three-game series starting tonight in Oakland. The Detroit Tigers have taken control of the AL central, and their lead is three games with three games left to play. The Tigers take on the Royals in Kansas City, while the White Sox cling to the slimmest of hopes as they travel to Cleveland to face the Indians.
Over in the national league, starting in the NL East, the Nationals and the Braves are both in the post season. The Nats have a three-game cushion over Atlanta with three games left to play, so the best the Braves can hope for is a tie. The NL west and central divisions are done, with the Giants and Reds winning their divisions respectively. The second wild card slot is still up for grabs, if only technically, leading the Dodgers by two games, with three games to play. The Cards host Cincinnati to close out the season, and the Dodgers host the Giants.
Tracking Miguel Cabrera’s quest for the Triple Crown, Miggy still leads the AL with a .325 batting average, Joe Mauer is second with a .323 average, Mike Trout is third at .321. Cabrera and Josh Hamilton are tied for the home run lead with 43, and Cabrera is comfortably ahead in RBI, 136 to 127 for Hamilton.

In college football this past weekend, the FIU Panthers were blown out by Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, 48-20. The Panther defense, expected to be their strength this season, has disappeared, giving up a whopping 501 yards to ULL. Short turnaround this week, as they return to the field on Thursday, here at home, against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Game time is 7:30 pm. The University of Miami beat North Carolina State in a shootout, 44-37. UM quarterback Stephen Morris threw for a school record 566 yards, completing 26 of 49 passes and 5 touchdowns. This saturday, the Canes travel to Soldier Field in Chicago, where they will take on the #9 team in the country, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Game time for Miami - Notre Dame is 7:30 pm, and you can watch it on Channel 6, NBC in South Florida. Some games with possible national championship implications this saturday, including #3 LSU @ #10 Florida; #8 West Virginia @ #11 Texas; #5 Georgia @ #6 South Carolina, #3 Florida State @ NC State, and #23 Washington @ #2 Oregon. The #1 team in the nation, Alabama, is off this week.
Jumping to the NFL, another heart-breaking loss for the Miami Dolphins, as they again fell in overtime, 24-21 to the Arizona Cardinals. A breakout game for rookie QB Ryan Tannehill and WR Brian Hartline. Tannehill completed 26 of 41 passes for 431 yards, and Hartline set a new Dolphin record with 253 receiving yards, on 12 catches. Cameron Wake had 4 1/2 sacks and Sean Smith intercepted two passes. Next Sunday, the Fins travel to Cincinnati to take on the much-improved Bengals. Game time is 1:00 pm and the game will be televised by CBS, Channel 4 in Miami.

Los Marlins estan desesperados por que se acabe la temporada para poderse ir de vacaciones. Estan completando la temporada del 2012 apropriadamente, y llevan 11 derrotas en sus ultimos 13 juegos. Ayer, fueron dominados por Cole Hamels y los Phillies de Philadelphia, 4-1, y los Phillies ganaron de 3-2 en la serie. Hamels permitio una sola carrera y solamente cinco hits, y poncho a 8 en sus siete innings de labor. Nathan Eovaldi no pitcheo mal, permitiendo 3 carreras y seis hits en los seis innings que trabajo. Es muy dificil ganar anotando solamente una carrera en un juego. Misericordiosamente, la temporada se termina el miercoles, despues de que los Peces reciban la visita de los Metropolitanos en una serie de tres juegos. Esta noche a las 7 pm, veremos a Josh Johnson contra Jeurys Familia; mañana, tambien a las 7 pm, Jacob Turner se enfrenta a RA Dickey; el miercoles le toca a Mark Buehrle, pero esa decision esta en veremos. Jeremy Hafner abrira para los Mets en ese ultimo juego, que comienza a las 4 pm. Quedan muchas entradas buenas para esta ultima serie.
Llegando ya al final de la temporada, todavia tenemos varias cositas para decidir en los playoffs. En la liga americana, los Yankees y los Orioles siguen empatados para el primer lugar de la division del este, quedando solamente tres juegos por jugarse. Los Yankees cierran con una serie contra las Medias Rotas de Boston, y Baltimore viaja a St. Petersburg para enfrentarse a los Tampa Bay Rays. Tanto los Yankees como los Orioles ya estan garantizados avanzar a la post temporada. En la division del oeste, los Texas Rangers ya saben que van a los playoffs, y los Atleticos de Oakland tienen que ganar un solo juego para avanzar tambien. Lo que esta en discusion en el oeste es el primer lugar de la division, ya que Texas tiene una ventaja de dos juegos sobre los A’s, y estos dos equipos tienen una serie de tres juegos en Oakland, comenzando esta noche. Los Tigres de Detroit estan en control de la division central, con una ventaja de tres juegos sobre las Medias Blancas. Detroit tiene tres juegos en Kansas City contra los Royals, y Chicago tienen que viajar a Cleveland para enfrentarse a los Indios sus tres ultimos partidos.
