The Oakland A’s and the San Francisco stayed alive in their respective best-of-five series and will play another day.  The Giants knocked off the Reds 2-1 in 10 innings, thanks to an error from an unexpected source, third baseman Scott Rolen.  That’s why it is so difficult to predict what happens in a baseball game.  The guy with eight gold gloves in his career commits the costly error.  In Oakland, the A’s got by Detroit 2-0.  Seth Smith homered and Coco Crisp climbed the wall in right-center field to rob Prince Fielder of a homer.  Brett Anderson threw six shutout innings, besting Anibal Sanchez, who pitched well enough to win, allowing only the two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Four games on the docket today.  At 1 pm, on the MLB Network, the Cardinals and the Nats hook up in the nation’s capital.  Edwin Jackson faces Chris Carpenter.  At 4 pm, on TBS, Cincinnati will try and close out the series against the San Francisco.  The Reds will send Mike Leake to the mound, the Giants will counter with Barry Zito.  At 7:30, also on TBS, the Orioles visit the Yankees at the stadium.  Hiroki Kuroda will toe the rubber for New York, Miguel Gonzalez will start for Baltimore.  The nightcap tonight is Detroit in Oakland against the A’s.  Max Scherzer against A. J. Griffin. Game time is 9:30, and you can watch it on TNT.

“Things that would drive me crazy if I let them” . . . . . . .

When are national broadcasters going to figure out how to correctly pronounce the names of Hispanic players?  It is Anibal (Ah-KNEE-bal) Sanchez, and Alex (AH-vila) Avila.  All major league teams publish a Media Guide that lists the correct prounciations, so there is really no excuse for these and many others that we get to hear constantly.  Over 25% of all the players in the majors and over 50% of players in the minors are from Latin America.  GET WITH THE PROGRAM.

Why do national writers and journalists insist on creating controversy by telling MLB managers how to set up batting orders, pitching rotations, who to play and who to bench?  BTW, the Yankees need to drop A-Rod in the batting order.  He is getting many chances to produce, especially with Robinson Cano hitting behind him, and not responding.  Something to watch for tonight:  O’s starter Miguel Gonzalez does not light up any radar guns, topping off at around 90-91 mph.  This is a guy that A-Rod should feast on.  Look for Nick Swisher to rebound against Gonzalez as well.  His numbers with runners in scoring position in the post season, (1 for 33) are downright ugly.

These same writers and journalists are also in charge of selecting MVP and Cy Young award winners.  I have been on the Mike Trout bandwagon for MVP all season long.  HOWEVER, after seeing Miguel Cabrera win the triple crown and lead the Tigers to a division championship, all after moving to third base to accommodate Prince Fielder, Miggy would get my vote this season.

Are the Texas Rangers going to re-sign outfielder Josh Hamilton or are they really willing to let him walk?  How are the Atlanta Braves going to handle their option with catcher Brian McCann?

What are the Marlins waiting for in order to make a decision on Larry Beinfest, Michael Hill, and Ozzie Guillen.  Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and his inner circle of “yes” men continue to “run on empty”.  But, on a positive note, we do have a great baseball park.

The University of Miami Hurricanes will be a good team next year and the following year.  Their defense is horrible and painful to watch.  That may not change overnight.

The Dolphins are in a logjam in the AFC East, tied with the Jets and the Bills at 2-3, behind New England at 3-2.  The Dolphins could be in a position to add some help at cornerback and/or some draft choices next year.  The Green Bay Packers are looking for help at running back, and the Fins have Daniel Thomas to offer.  The Kansas City Chiefs may be looking for QB help, and backup Matt Moore may fill the bill in KC. I’m just saying....

I hate to admit this, but Bill Belichick is a damn good coach.  It helps, though, when you have Tom Brady leading the offense.  Speaking of leading an offense, Andrew Luck is going to be a stud and I am ALMOST ready to jump on the Ryan Tannehill bandwagon.

The Houston Texans and the Atlanta Falcons are not going to end the season unbeaten.  However, they are very good choices to be the last two teams standing when the Super Bowl comes around.

Regardless of their record so far, the New Orleans Saints may be about ready to go. A bye week after an emotional win usually doesn’t help, but they will benefit from the time off.

Just thinking out loud, but the Green Bay Packers and QB Aaron Rodgers are having a difficult time so far this season.  Could it be that they miss their former offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin, now the Dolphin head coach?

I’m SICK of exhibition games and preseason games in any and all sports.  Yeech.

Did you even notice that the NHL and the players are involved in a labor dispute and have cancelled the first few weeks of the season?

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Who was the first Latin American player to play professional baseball in the United States?  Cuban Esteban "Steve" Bellán played for the Troy Haymakers during the inaugural season of the National Association, baseball's first recognized big-league circuit in 1871.  Bellán, who learned the sport while studying at Fordham University, thus became the first official Latin American major-league ballplayer.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
