Unless something drastic and unexpected happens, we will be seeing a world series matchup of the two teams tied with the least amount of victories during the regular season.
The Detroit Tigers, who struggled in the regular season before finally overtaking the Chicago White Sox, swept their series with the Yankees, pummeling them yesterday 8-1. Jhonny Peralta connected long distance twice, Austin Jackson and Miguel Cabrera also went yard. Detroit starter Max Scherzer combined with three relievers to again bring the powerful Yankee lineup to its knees, holding them to only two hits. The Yankees hit .182 as a team in the series vs. Detroit, scoring in only three of the 39 innings they played against the Tigers. This, after hitting .157 in the series they won against the Baltimore Orioles. Very hard to win when you don’t hit. CC Sabathia was awful yesterday, going only 3 2/3 innings and giving up six runs and eleven hits. Definitely not his shining moment. Detroit will have five days to rest up for the world series, while the Yankees watch on television. It looks like it is going to be a very interesting winter for the Yankees.
In St. Louis yesterday, the Cardinals got seven terrific innings from Adam Wainwright, and he got all the support he needed from Jon Jay, Matt Holliday, and Yadier Molina, who drove in two runs apiece. With the win, the Cards now lead the series 3 games to 1, and can clinch it tonight. Game time is 8:00 pm. Lance Lynn will two the rubber for the Cards, Barry Zito will start for the Cardinals. You can watch the game on FOX, Channel 7 in Miami.
TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: When was the last time the Yankees got swept in a seven-game postseason series? Tell you later, alligator.
In tonight’s edition of Thursday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 13-6. Former Miami Hurricane Frank Gore ran for 131 yards in the win. San Francisco improved to 5-2, Seattle fell to 4-3.
Even though they are off this week, the Dolphins are keeping busy, and I am hearing that they are looking for some wide receiver help in a trade. Sources are saying that they have been talking to a couple of teams, including the KC Chiefs, supposedly zeroing in on Dwayne Bowe. Midseason trades are not the norm in the NFL, so we’ll see how these rumors pan out.

In college football this weekend, FIU takes their show on the road tomorrow when they visit Troy. Game time is 1:00 pm, and I invite you to catch game broadcast (in English) on your smartphone or on the computer at www.fiusports.com. I will be handling the play-by-play, and Pete Pelegrin will be handling the color analysis.
The University of Miami Hurricanes are coming off consecutive losses, and they will be at the Seven Names Stadium tomorrow night at 8:00 pm against the Florida State Seminoles. You can watch the game on ABC, Channel 10 in Miami. ESPN-U on your cable or satellite system. In other games involving the top-ten teams this week, last night, #3 Oregon beat Arizona State 43-21. Tomorrow, #1 Alabama is at Tennessee, #2 Florida hosts #7 South Carolina, #4 Kansas State is at #13 West Virginia, #5 Notre Dame is at home against BYU, #6 LSU travels to #18 Texas A&M, #8 Oregon State hosts Utah, Kansas is at #9 Oklahoma, and #10 USC is at home against Colorado.
The Miami Heat beat the Detroit Pistons last night, 105-78. The Heat got 51 points, 13 rebounds, and 15 assists from the “Big Three”, led by Dwayne Wade, who scored 21 points on 9-13 shooting, and played his best game since returning from knee surgery this past April. On Saturday, the Heat will welcome the San Antonio Spurs at the AAA. Game time is 3:30 pm. I really dislike NBA exhibition games. The regular season opener for the Heat is October 20th at the AAA against the Boston Celtics.
THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: When was the last time the Yankees got swept in a seven-game postseason series? It was the 1976 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, who disposed of the Yanks in four games. The Yankees were swept in a five-game playoff series in 1980 by the Kansas City Royals. I just love painful memories.
