The Miami Dolphins have now lost five out of their last six games after losing to the San Francisco 49ers yesterday 27-13.  In those five losses, Miami has averaged just over 13 points a game.  Ryan Tannehill has not been able to establish a vertical passing attack, and obviously doesn’t have the weapons to stretch the field and throw the ball downfield more effectively.  Against a defense like the 49ers, as is the case with most defenses in the NFL, you cannot “nickel and dime” them and expect to win.  For the eighth time this season, the Fins could not muster 300 yards in offense, finishing yesterday with a measly 227 yards.  Tannehill completed 17-33 passes for only 150 yards, and completed only 7 of 19 passing attempts in the second half.  Miami had a chance to tie the game with a little more than four minutes left in the game, down by 7 and the ball at the 49ers 35-yard line, but four straight incompletions by Tannehill ended that drive and SF QB Colin Kaepernick ran for a 50 yard touchdown to seal the Fins’ fate.  The loss dropped the Dolphins into last place in the AFC East with a 5-8 record, assuring them of their sixth non-winning season in the last seven years, including four in a row.  Miami returns home to the Seven-Names Stadium to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, game time 1:05 pm.  It doesn’t look good for a sellout, so whether or not it is televised in South Florida is up in the air.

Yesterday in the NFL,

In baseball, the LA Dodgers are on the verge of signing Zack Greinke to a contract.  The Cincinnati Reds and outfielder Ryan Ludwick reached agreement on a two-year, $15 million contract.  The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla.  The Tampa Bay Rays pulled of a trade with the Kansas City Royals, sending pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City for top prospects Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi and two other minor leaguers. Myers and Odorizzi will have a chance to make an immediate splash with the Rays this year, while Shields and Davis join Jeremy Guthrie and Ervin Santana in a Royals rotation that should make them a contender in the AL Central this coming season.  The Cleveland Indians signed free agent Mark Reynolds to a contract.  That could signal that the Yankees will sign Kevin Youkilis to a contract to replace Alex Rodriguez at 3b.  Follow the link below to an excellent article by David Villavicencio regarding A-Rod.  Great job, David!

Dear Santa Claus Jeffrey Loria and minions:

If you are not going to try and field a competitive team immediately, please do yourself and the South Florida baseball fans a favor and sell the team as quickly as possible.  Unless you make a TRUE EFFORT, no player in his right mind will ever want to play here in the future, you have alienated players on your roster, and most fans will not buy a ticket to a game as long as you are still here.  You are only going to be able to get guys that have nowhere else to go.  Please refrain from feeding us the “look at what Oakland and Baltimore did last year” story.  That comparison does not apply here.  They had young players in their farm systems that were obviously ready to contribute immediately.  Inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible until the you dismantled the major league roster and traded for these new prospects now.  All of those prospects are still a couple of years away from being ready to contribute at the major league level.  You got a wonderful ballpark built in South Florida.  Sell the team so we can enjoy baseball in Miami again.

I know this may sound repetitious, but the five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013.  After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team.  Just keep your fingers crossed.

In boxing, Juan Manuel Marquez knocked out Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round of their scheduled 12-round fight on Saturday night.  After two losses and a draw in the first three fights, all on controversial decisions, Marquez made sure of the outcome this time, catching Pacquiao with a thunderous right hand that put him face down on the canvas, where he remained motionless for about two minutes.  On the same card, Yuriorkis Gamboa, fighting for the first time in 15 months, defeated Michael Farenas by unanimous decision.  Gamboa improved his record to 22-0

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: One of the many problems in boxing is the number of divisions and the number of governing bodies.  Championships mean absolutely nothing.  Pacquiao and Marquez fought at 147 pounds on Saturday, but Marquez is the WBO junior welterweight champion (140 lbs) and Pacquiao doesn’t hold any titles.  Who holds the heavyweight belt(s)? Tell you later, alligator.

In college football, the winner of the 2012 Heisman Trophy was Johnny Manziel.  The QB from Texas A&M - the redshirt freshman with the monicker “Johnny Football” - became the first freshman and the youngest player to win the prestigious award.  He was the first freshman ever to pass for at least 3,000 yards and run for 1,000.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  One of the many problems in boxing is the number of divisions and the number of governing bodies. If you said Vladimir Klitschko, you would be half-right.  Vladimir is the WBO, IBF, and WBA champion in the heavyweight (unlimited) division, while his brother Vitaly holds the WBC belt.  Alexander Povetkin (Who?) is the interim WBA “regular” (HUH?) heavyweight championship.
