Make it 12 wins in a row for the Miami Heat, as they beat the Sacramento Kings in double overtime 141-129.  LeBron James scored 40 points and dished out 16 assists, while Dwyane Wade had 39 points in the tough win.  The twelve wins in a row is the second longest winning streak in team history.  After playing five games over the last seven days, the team will enjoy a well-deserved couple of days to recover before they return to action on Friday, again at the AAA, against the Memphis Grizzlies.  After the Friday night game, the Heat will hit the road for games on Sunday afternoon in New York against the Knicks, Monday night in Minneapolis against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Wednesday in Orlando against the Magic.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Last night’s Heat win, their 12th in a row, is the second longest winning streak in team history.  What’s the record?  Tell you later, alligator.

In college hoops, the University of Miami Hurricanes take on the Virginia Tech Hokies tonight at the BankUnited center.  Game time is 7:00 pm.  A bad night yesterday for teams in the top ten, as #1 Indiana fell to unranked Minnesota, 77-73.  The #8 Florida Gators also lost last night, 64-58 against Tennessee.

The FIU Panthers return to the hardwood tomorrow night, in Louisiana-Monroe, against the Warhawks.

In college baseball, FIU lost to Texas Tech, 8-6 to split their two-game series.  Meanwhile, the University of Miami beat St. Thomas 5-4.  The Panthers, now 7-2 this season, welcomes Ole Miss to the FIU Baseball Stadium this weekend for a three-game series.  The Hurricanes will play Barry University this afternoon, and will have their first true test this season as they travel to Gainesville for a three game series against the Florida Gators.

In Major League exhibition baseball, the Marlins got home runs from the man-child, Giancarlo Stanton, Matt Downs, and a grand slam from Casey Kotchman to beat the Mets, 7-5.  Ricky Nolasco threw two scoreless innings.

Here are all the scores from yesterday’s spring training games.  You can “click” on the box scores and the recap under each individual game’s line score.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria continues to try and put a positive spin on his actions this offseason.  First, from ESPN.com, he says that he did not renege on his 2012 promises:

From the Palm Beach Post’s Joe Capozzi, Loria also says that the 2013 Marlins are not a AAA-level minor league team:

Here is Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria “Letter to our Fans” that was published in the three South Florida major newspapers last weekend.

I will have a reply to Mr. Loria’s letter, and I’ll share it with you in tomorrow’s blog.

Buster Olney from ESPN says that the Marlins need to act quickly on Gancarlo Stanton.  Interesting reading:

In other baseball news, the Braves and the Nationals are the class of the NL East.  Here is Mark Bradley’s story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Remember Manny Ramirez?  He’s back......

I continue with my analysis of all 30 MLB teams as we hit spring training running.  Please allow me to introduce to you the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Rays.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 88-74  Mgr. Mike Matheny

After finishing one game short of a second consecutive trip to the World Series, the Cards’ biggest question is SS Rafael Furcal’s return from a torn ligament in his throwing elbow.  For some reason, the team (so far) has elected not to re-sign P Kyle Lohse, even after a 16-3 season.  They believe that young pitchers like Trevor Rosenthal and Shelby Miller are ready for the show.  Like every year, the Cardinals will be a team to contend with.

TAMPA BAY RAYS   90-72  Mgr. Joe Maddon

The Rays manage to win 90 games every year, even while playing in the best division in baseball.  Lots of changes this year on the Gulf coast, as the Rays said goodbye to starting pitchers James Shields, Wade Davis, OF BJ Upton, DH Carlos Peña, and relievers Burke Badenhop and JP Howell.  New faces in Tampa include 1B James Loney, SS Yunel Escobar, OF Shelley Duncan, P Jamey Wright and Roberto Hernandez, OF Wil Myers, and IF Kelly Johnson.  Joe Maddon is the best manager in the American League and will count on Cy Young winner David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, and Matt Moore to anchor the starting rotation.  Can closer Fernando Rodney repeat on his career best 48-save season?

Tomorrow’s contestants are the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Last night’s Heat win, their 12th in a row, is the second longest winning streak in team history?  What’s the record?

The Heat are two wins away from the franchise's longest winning stretch of 14, accomplished from Dec. 6, 2004 - Jan. 1, 2005.
