The Miami Heat were forced to play without Chris Bosh last night because of the flu, but the rest of the team responded nicely and beat the Houston Rockets 114-108.  LeBron James and Dwyane Wade handled the scoring load with 32 and 31 points respectively.  Udonis Haslem replaced Bosh in the starting lineup  and grabbed 13 rebounds.  The Heat defense was very good, especially in the last few minutes of the game to hold off the Rockets, who had cut a 12-point Miami lead to only 3 points.  Houston was held to only 9-25 shooting from behind the three-point arc, after hitting an NBA-record 23 three-pointers on Tuesday night.  The Heat won their fifth game in a row at home, improving to 20-3 at the AAA.  Overall, they have won eight out of their last 10 games.  The LA Clippers come a-calling tomorrow night, and the LA Lakers visit the AAA on Sunday afternoon.
In the rest of the NBA yesterday,

Cleveland 122 Charlotte 95
Kyrie Irving had a game-high 22 points.

LA Clippers 86 Orlando 76
Eric Bledsoe led the shorthanded Clippers with 27 points.  The Clippers were without Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, out with injuries.  The Magic have lost 11 games in a row.

Indiana 88 Philadelphia 69
The Pacers, who were playing in the NBA’s only back-to-back-to-back this season, won their third game in three days, holding the 76ers to 34% shooting.

Boston 99 Toronto 95
Kevin Garnett had 27 points and 10 rebounds as Coach Doc Rivers tallied his 400th win as Boston’s head coach.

Washington 106 New York 96
John Wall led six Wizards players in double figures with 21 points.

Atlanta 103 Memphis 92
Jeff Teague scored 22 points and dished out 13 assists.

Brooklyn 93 Detroit 90
Joe Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds left in the game.

In college hoops, the #8-ranked University of Miami is preparing for an important battle on Saturday afternoon against the North Carolina Tar Hells at the BankUnited Center.  Game time on Saturday is 2:00 pm, and you can watch the game on ESPN on your cable or satellite system.

The FIU basketball team returns to the hardwood tonight at home against Florida Atlantic, before heading out to North Texas to take on the Mean Green on Saturday at 8:00 pm.

A frantic day in college football, as National Letter of Intent day arrived, the day when the high school seniors are deciding where to go to school.  As I said yesterday, this process is more of a crap-shoot than even the NFL draft.

Rivals.com covers the process like no one else.

Rivals ranked the University of Miami signing class #44 in the country, while FIU was ranked #111 out of 123 total schools.  Alabama had the top rated class in the country, followed by Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, and Michigan.  Florida State was #9 in these rankings.  Ask me about the rankings for this particular class in 3 or 4 years.

Here is the complete list, team by team:

Here are the individual breakdowns of the local teams:

Miami Hurricanes

FIU Panthers

Florida Gators

Florida State Seminoles

The most interesting story to come out of the National Letter of Intent day is the story of South Plantation High School running back Alex Collins.  Check out what happened right here:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  A rare 148-year-old baseball card discovered at a rural Maine yard sale has been auctioned for $92,000. The 1865 card depicting the Brooklyn Atlantics amateur baseball club was sold in Connecticut.  What is the most expensive baseball card ever?  Tell you later, alligator.

Dear Jeffrey Loria and minions:

You're still here?!?!? What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team?  What are you waiting for now?  Valentine’s day?  Easter?  Next year’s HOF election?  Haven't you done enough damage already?

Here’s the answer to today’s question:  A rare 148-year-old baseball card discovered at a rural Maine yard sale was sold yesterday for $92,000. The 1865 card depicting the Brooklyn Atlantics amateur baseball club was sold in Connecticut.  What is the most expensive baseball card ever?

The most expensive card ever is a 1909 Honus Wagner card, which sold for $2.8 million back in 2007.  The card was issued by the American Tobacco Company, and the story goes that Wagner refused to allow production of his card to go on because he did not want kids to buy cigarettes in order to get his card.  A total of only 60 to 200 cards were distributed to the public.  The owner of the card?  Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick.
