MONDAY, MONDAY! Here's the Blog - November 18th, 2013

Let’s kickoff the week with the NFL and the Dolphins:

PLEASE NOTE:  I will continue to refrain from any Incognito / Martin babble until something newsworthy happens.

The Dolphins got past the San Diego Chargers yesterday at the Seven Names Stadium by the score of 20-16.  With the win, the Fins are back the wild card picture, tied with the NY Jets, who set a new NFL record by alternating wins and losses for ten straight weeks.

Why does it take all of preseason and the first nine games to figure out what book you’re reading?

MONDAY NIGHT

New England @ Carolina -3 8:30 pm ESPN

Carolina favored over New England?  Who would have thunk it?  Are we living in Bizarro-World?  The Panthers have won five straight, and have outscored their opponents 140-57 during that streak, including the 49ers last week, in San Francisco, holding them to nine points in a 10-9 win.  The Panthers have also been very good on the offensive side of the ball, as Cam Newton has led the offense that leads the NFL in time of possession.  Regardless, although my heart says go with Carolina, my head tells me to not go against the Patriots, after a bye week, and on Monday night, when Tom Brady is 13-4.  Another example of hoping I’m wrong, but I’m taking the Pats plus the points.

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with more news from all around the league:

Of course, we can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In college football, the University of Miami’s hopes to reach the ACC Championship game came crashing down on Saturday as Duke absolutely crushed the Canes 48-30.  The Canes have now lost three in a row, and in those three losses, their non-existent defense has given up 1,609 yards and 131 points.

MY TAKE:  Coach Al Golden has been praised repeatedly, and deservedly so, for keeping the Canes focused and playing well while they were under that suffocating NCAA cloud.  That honeymoon is now over.  As much as I appreciate Golden’s assertions that Defensive Coordinator Mark D-Onofrio is “working his tail off to get it (the defense) fixed”, you are judged on results, not just on effort.  D’Onofrio’s defense hasn’t given up less than twenty points in a game since the third week of the season, and that was to Savannah State, a Division II team.  That is totally unacceptable.  Not everyone is meant to be a defensive coordinator at the NCAA Division I level, and that could be the case here.  Firing the coordinator during the season may not be the short-term answer, but it may be the needed first step in fixing the situation long-term.

The Canes take on Virginia this Saturday at 12 noon, back home at the Seven Names Stadium.  Virginia is 2-8 this season, and 0-6 in the ACC.  The Cavaliers could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the Canes, or could be the nail in the coffin for this season.  Virginia is 109th in the country in points scored this season.  You can watch the game on ESPN-U.

The Canes will close out their season on Friday, November 29th, in Pittsburgh, against the Pitt Panthers.

Manny Navarro and Susan Miller Degnan have more from Coral Gables:

The FIU Panthers lost to UTEP on Saturday, 33-10.  Their record is now 1-9, and will take on the Thundering Herd of Marshall at FIU Stadium this  Saturday, at 6:00 pm.  No TV or radio.

The Panthers mercifully close out their season in Boca Raton on Friday, the 29th, in their annual crosstown battle against Florida Atlantic.  That game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 on your cable or satellite system.

Moving to the hardwood,

The Heat enjoyed their weekend, as they beat the  Dallas Mavericks on Friday, 110-104 and then beat up on the hapless Charlotte Bobcats, 97-81.  This week, the Heat have three games on tap, hosting the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, traveling to Orlando to take on the Magic on Wednesday, and returning to host the Magic on Saturday here at the AAA.  All three games this week will be televised on Sun Sports on your cable or satellite system.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Other than the San Diego Padres, who have never had one, what team has gone the longest since its last no-hitter?  The answer comes later, alligator.

On the NHL ice, George Richards has all the latest on the Panthers, as they continue on the road to take on the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow night, the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, and the Calgary Flames on Friday night.  The team returns home to take on the Philadelphia Flyers next Monday.

Here is Santos Perez’ weekly boxing spotlight column from the Miami Herald:

PERSONAL QUESTION:  Can someone please explain to me why the Miami Herald Sports Department has a “PRO WRESTLING EDITOR” (Jim Varsallone)?  Hasn’t the Herald figured out that Pro Wrestling is only entertainment, and not a real competition sport?  Do they also have “SANTA CLAUS, EASTER BUNNY, AND TOOTH FAIRY EDITORS?

I am not one of those people who refuse to admit that they enjoy watching professional wrestling, (I have always enjoyed watching wrestling on TV), and I agree that wrestlers are tremendous athletes, but the fights are staged and the results are preplanned.  The Herald needs to step it up when it comes to their boxing coverage.  They’re boxing coverage is pathetic, and they are totally underutilizing one of the most talented boxing writers in the industry in Santos Perez.  C’mon, Herald!  Get with the program!

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Other than the San Diego Padres, who have never had one, what team has gone the longest since its last no-hitter?

The Cleveland Indians - Len Barker threw their last no-hitter, a perfect game, back on May 15th, 1981.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
