In what could possibly end up being the biggest and rowdiest crowd at Marlins Park this year, the Dominican Republic advanced to the Championship round of the World Baseball Classic, by beating the US team, 3-1. 34,366 fans saw another good game, as they went into the ninth inning tied at 1-1, with US closer Craig Kimbrel on the mound. Nelson Cruz led off the inning with a double, took third on a groundout, and scored on a pinch-hit single by Erick Aybar. Aybar then stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Jose Reyes. The Dominicans had tied the game in the second inning with a Hanley Ramirez home run. Tonight’s game between the US and Puerto Rico is an elimination game, with the winner advancing to the Championship round to join Dominican, the Netherlands, and Japan. You can watch the game tonight on MLB Network and ESPN Deportes starting at 7:00 pm.
Here is MLB.com’s coverage of the classic:
David Schoenfield of ESPN.com writes that it is about time the fans in the US started caring about the World Baseball Classic:
In exhibition baseball, the Marlins enjoyed a rare day off yesterday, and are in Tampa to take on the New York Yankees today at 1:05 pm. John Maine will start for the Fish and the Yankees will have CC Sabathia on the hill. The biggest news from the Marlins yesterday was when Marlins president David Samson and Jose Reyes exchanged hugs before the US-Dominican Republic game.

The Fins have lost TE Anthony Fasano, also to the Chiefs, and RB Reggie Bush as well, Fasano to the Rams, and Bush signed with th Detroit Lions. The Chiefs have been busy, and they also traded for QB Alex Smith from SF and released their QB, Matt Cassel.
Former Dolphins #1 overall pick OT Jake Long has spent the last two days in St. Louis getting checked out by the Rams’ medical staff, and negotiating a deal. He may also soon be joining the list of ex-Dolphins.
