In college hoops, the #5 University of Miami Hurricanes travel to play #3 Duke for a game tomorrow.  A victory over Duke would clinch the Canes’ first basketball conference championship ever, and would probably put them in excellent position for a top seed in the NCAA tournament later in March.  The Blue Devils are going to be a little angry, first after losing to Miami earlier this season by 27 points, and after losing last night against Virginia. To add fuel to the fire, the Duke women’s team lost to Miami last night, their first conference loss this season. You can watch the UM-Duke game on ESPN at 6:00 pm tomorrow.

The FIU Panthers defeated Louisiana-Monroe last night, 67-58.  FIU had a 17-0 run in the final 5:33 to defeat the Warhawks. The win was the 11th Sun Belt triumph for the Panthers this season, and they improved their record to 16-12, the most victories in a season since 2000-2001.  The Panthers close out their regular season on Saturday against Florida Atlantic at Boca Raton.  Tipoff will be at 7:00 pm.

In college baseball, the Hurricanes travel to Gainesville for a three game series against the Florida Gators this weekend. FIU hosts #8 Ole Miss at the FIU Baseball stadium for a three game set this weekend.

In Major League exhibition baseball, the Marlins lost to the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, 8-2.  Justin Turner did not get out of the first inning, giving up 3 walks, a hit batsman, and four hits, including a grand slam to non-roster player Oscar Taveras.  The Man-Child, Giancarlo Stanton, went 3-3 with a single, double, triple, and a walk. In a “B” game earlier yesterday morning, Marlins top pitching prospect Jose Fernandez retired all six batters he faced against the Cardinals.  The Fish take on the Minnesota Twins this afternoon in Jupiter at 1:05 pm.

Here are all the scores from yesterday’s spring training games.  You can “click” on the box scores and the recap under each individual game’s line score.

The Yankees have made a contract offer to Robinson Cano in order to avoid a bidding war after this season when he becomes a free agent, according to ESPNNewYork.com’s Wallace Matthews:

Pete Caldera of The Record reports that Mark Teixeira is sick of the steroid issue, but he doesn’t get tired of defending baseball against cheats:

Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers missed a game yesterday due to injury.  This is now getting ridiculous.  Here’s ESPN.com’s story:

Here is Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria “Letter to our Fans” that was published in the three South Florida major newspapers last weekend.

I will have a reply to Mr. Loria’s letter, and I’ll share it with you in monday’s blog.

I have reached the end with my analysis of all 30 MLB teams.  The last two teams left standing are the Washington Nationals and the Toronto Blue Jays

WASHINGTON NATIONALS 98-64  Mgr. Dave Johnson

The reigning NL East champions look ready to challenge for a World Series this year.  Stephen Strasburg will be off and running this year, Bryce Harper is back after his Rookie of the Year campaign, and they did not sit still this offseason.  Their bullpen cost them last year, and they went out and signed Rafael Soriano to handle the closing chores this season.  They also added P Dan Haren to further boost their starting rotation, as well as CF Denard Span and C Chris Snyder.  The Nats and the Braves look to be the class of the NL east this season.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS   73-89  Mgr. John Gibbons

Wheeling and Dealing doesn’t come close to describing what the Blue Jays did in the offseason.  Gone are manager John Farrell, SS Yunel Escobar, SS Adeiny Hechavarria, P Henderson Alvarez, C Jeff Mathis, and others.  New faces include, SS Jose Reyes, Cy Young award winner RA Dickey, P Josh Johnson, P Mark Buehrle, OF Melky Cabrera, IF Maicer Izturis, OF-IF Emilio Bonifacio, and IF Mark DeRosa.  This franchise looks to end a 20-year playoff drought.  If they can stay healthy, the Jays will make noise in the AL East.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The NFL free agency period is upon us.  The Dolphins are $44 million under the salary cap and are in excellent shape.  Rumors have them targeting former Steelers WR Mike Wallace.  Wallace is the deep threat they desperately need, averaging 17.4 yards per catch during his career, with 32 TD passes in 48 career starts.  Who was the last Miami WR to average 17.4 yards per catch in a season (minimum of 50 receptions)? Tell you later, alligator.

The NFL Free Agent period starts March 12, but we are beginning to hear rumblings and rumors about what could be going on.  There are also some possible trades to discuss, including the San Francisco 49ers trading QB Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs.  In my opinion, if the trade goes through, this is the best option for Smith, who fell from grace in San Francisco after suffering an injury that opened the door for Colin Kaepernick.

Of course, look for the Dolphins to be very busy in the free agent market, both their own players and players from around the league.  I still believe that the Fins will re-sign WR Brian Hartline and probably OT Jake Long, although that one is still in question, depending on who you talk to.  There are other needs to fill, and the  team has plenty of salary-cap space and five selections in the first three rounds of the NFL draft.  This offseason will either make or break GM Jeff Ireland.  The Dolphin owner, Stephen Ross, took a gamble by keeping Ireland in charge. Will NFL players be willing to sign with the Dolphins?  The next few weeks will tell.  Will he be able to sign the right players?  The next season should tell us.  In my opinion, this team will be in a position this coming season to get into the playoffs.  How far depends on Ireland.

Miami has not had any wide receiver with a minimum of 50 catches average that number even in just one season since Irving Fryar back in 1994.
