The championship of the World Baseball Classic belongs to the Dominican Republic, after they defeated Puerto Rico, 3-0.  The Dominican team marched through the tournament unbeaten and brings the championship to the Caribbean for the first time.  Too much hitting, fielding, and pitching for the rest of the world.  The Yankees’ Robinson Cano was named the MVP of the classic.  Too much pitching and too much hitting for a team that played like it had something to prove, after early exits in the first two classics.  Congratulations to Puerto Rico and manager Edwin Rodriguez, who led his team to the championship game, only to lose a third close game to the Dominicans.   For the most part, MLB did it right and I am looking forward to the next classic.  I truly hope that the USA team and fans learn something from the Dominicans and Puerto Ricans.

Here is MLB.com’s coverage of the classic:

In exhibition baseball yesterday, the Marlins fell to the Cardinals 5-4.  Placido Polanco drove in two runs for the Fish.  Starter Justin Turner gave up four runs and seven hits in his five innings of work, throwing 64 pitches, 42 of them for strikes.  Manager Mike Redmond was encouraged by Turner’s outing.  The coaches have been working with Turner on delivery issues, now it is time to just get sharper.  The 21-year-old is 0-2 with an ERA of 10.80 this spring in three starts, all of them against the Cardinals.  Today, the Marlins take on the Washington Nationals, again in Jupiter.  Chris Young will start for Washington, Wade LeBlanc will toe the rubber for the Fish.  First pitch at 1:05 pm.

Here are all the scores from yesterday’s spring training games.  You can “click” on the box scores and the recap under each individual game’s line score.

The Miami Herald has a story on the pitching options for the Marlins:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  When was the last season that both the Yankees and the Mets had a losing record? Tell you later, alligator.

In NFL news, the league’s annual meeting continue in Phoenix, Arizona.  Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald is blogging from Phoenix and he lists some available free agents who are considering joining the Dolphins:

Field Yates of ESPN Sports offers a list of five remaining free agents that would make a big impact:

The Miami Heat take their 23-game winning streak into Cleveland tonight, to take on the Cavaliers.  The Heat’s next four games are against the teams with the four worst records in the NBA.  Cleveland is 2-7 in their last nine games, and are playing without Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao due to injuries.  The Heat need to stay alert and keep their guard up, because long winning streaks have a tendency to come to an end against teams that you normally wouldn’t and shouldn’t lose to.  Game time tonight is 7:00 pm and you can watch the game on Sun Sports on your cable or satellite system.

In the rest of the NBA yesterday,

Indiana 95 Orlando 73
Paul George led the Pacers with 19 points, Tyler Hansbrough finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Milwaukee 102 Portland 95
Big game for Monta Ellis, who registered 21 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.  Brandon Jennings led the Bucks with 24 points.

Denver 114 Oklahoma City 104
Ty Lawson scored 25 points, one of six Nuggets in double figures.  Andre Miller had 20 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.

Sacramento 116 LA Clippers 101
Marcus Thornton scored 25 points and Toney Douglas had 19 points.  The two combined for nine 3-point baskets.

In college hoops, everyone is working on their brackets for the NCAA tournament that tips off tomorrow, as we are all waiting for Friday, when the University of Miami Hurricanes take on Pacific in the Eastern Regionals.  You can watch that game on TNT, starting at 2:15 pm.  The top seeds in the four different regionals are Indiana (East Regional), Kansas (South Regional), Louisville (Midwest Regional), and Gonzaga (Western Regional).  I absolutely LOVE the NCAA Tournament.  Tomorrow, I will post my Sweet 16, my Final Four, and my pick for the Champion. In college baseball, FIU salvaged one of the three games this weekend in Boca Raton against Florida Atlantic, pummeling the Owls yesterday, 12-1.  The Panthers hit the road again for a Wednesday game against #23 ranked Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, before returning home for a three-game weekend series against Western Kentucky.  Meanwhile, the Hurricanes also lost two out of three this weekend against North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  The Canes face Columbia on Tin a two-game mid-week series, and take on Virginia Tech this weekend in a three-game set.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  When was the last season that both the Yankees and the Mets had a losing record?

The last time it happened was in 1992.  Since the Mets were born in 1962, (51 years ago), it has only happened six times - 1965, 1966, 1967, 1982, 1991, and 1992.
