The Miami Heat patiently wait for their opponent in the second round of the playoffs, either the Bulls or the Nets, and those two teams are taking it to the wire.  In yesterday’s NBA action,

Brooklyn 95 Chicago 92
The Nets and the Bulls will need a seventh game to decide their first-round playoff after the Nets escaped Chicago yesterday with a win in game six.  Deron Williams scored 17 points and dished out 11 assists, while Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson also scored 17 points each in the win.  The winner of this series will face the Miami Heat on Monday night in the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Golden State 92 Denver 88
The Warriors almost blew an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, but were able to fend off the Nuggets to advance to the Western Conference semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs.  Stephan Curry finished with 22 points, and Andrew Bogut contributed with 14 points and 21 rebounds.

Greg Cote of the Miami Herald says the Heat’s toughest opponent in the 2013 playoffs may be boredom:

The Marlins fell to the Phillies for the 10th time in their last 13 encounters.  Domonic Brown went 3-4 with a home run and two RBI and Ryan Howard also connected long distance in their 7-2 win over the Fish.  Marlins starter Alex Sanabia gave un four runs, two of them earned, in his five innings of work to take the loss.  Justin Ruggiano homered for the Marlins and Juan Pierre reached the 600 stolen bases milestone.  Here are the pitching match-ups for the rest of the series in Philadelphia:

Tonight Ricky Nolasco vs Jonathan Pettibone 7:05 pm
Saturday Jose Fernandez vs Cole Hamels 7:05 pm
Sunday Kevin Slowey vs Roy Halladay 2:35 pm

The Fish are still bringing up the rear in MLB in runs scored, with a grand total of 81 runs in their first 29 games.  I will be posting the “bottom five” rankings in runs scored until the Marlins aren’t on the list.  At this point, I am not very optimistic about this list not being a permanent part of this blog.

TEAM               W-L Runs
Marlins            8-21       81
Dodgers          13-14      91
White Sox       12-15       97
Twins              12-12      98
Cubs               11-17 100

If you think their runs scored statistics are sorry, just think of this - at this pace, Jeffrey Loria’s creation is looking at a W-L record of 45-117.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Jeffrey Loria’s 2013 Marlins are poised to threaten the worst record ever in Major League history.  Since the major leagues went to 162 games, what team has the worst record in history?  Tell you later, alligator.

In the rest of MLB yesterday, first in the National League,

Padres 4 Cubs 2
Everth Cabrera’s go-ahead single was part of a four-run eighth inning for the Padres.

Nationals 3 Braves 1
Dan Haren pitched eight innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk.  Denard Span went 3-4 and drove in two runs.  Dan Uggla homered for the Braves in the loss.

Cardinals 6 Reds 5
Allen Craig and Pete Kozma drove in two runs each.  The Cardinals are 7-3 in their last ten games.

Over in the American League:

Red Sox 3 Blue Jays 1
Ryan Dempster gave up a run and only four hits in six solid innings of work.  Toronto has lost six of their last seven games.

White Sox 3 Rangers 1
Tyler Flowers’ three-run homer in the sixth inning was the difference.

Tigers 7 Astros 3 (14 innings)
The Tigers scored four runs in the 14th inning, the go-ahead hit was provided by Don Kelly.  The Tigers have won six out of seven.

Orioles 5 Angels 1
Chris Tillman tossed eight scoreless innings.  Nate McLouth connected long distance with a runner on.

The game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Kansas City Royals was postponed due to heavy rains and frigid cold temperatures.  No makeup date has been announced.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Jeffrey Loria’s 2013 Marlins are poised to threaten the worst record ever in Major League history.  Since the major leagues went to 162 games, what team has the worst record in history?

The 1962 New York Mets hold that distinction, finishing their inaugural season with a horrific 40-120 record.  (Mercifully, MLB decided not to make them play two rained-out games).  Next worse:  the 2003 edition of the Detroit Tigers, who finished 43-119.  The Tigers finished that season by winning five of their last six games to avoid the all-time futility record.  There is hope, however:  The Mets finished last or next-to-last for seven years in a row until the Miracle Mets won the world series in 1969.  The Tigers also turned it around very quickly, and just three years after the disastrous 2003 season, finished with a 95-67 record, and won the 2006 American League pennant.
