WOW!

Ray Allen’s step-back three pointer with 5 seconds erased a 10-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, but still trailed 94-89 with 28 seconds remaining.  LeBron James, who scored 18 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter after losing his trademark headband, hit a three-pointer, Kawhi Leonard made one of two free throws to give San Antonio a three-point lead with 18 seconds remaining.  LeBron missed a three, Chris Bosh got the rebound and found Allen dropping back beyond the three-point arc and Allen nailed it to send the game to OT.  In the extra period, LeBron hit a short jumper to give Miami the lead for good, 101-100.  San Antonio had still another chance to win the game, but Ginobili was stripped on his way to the basket, Allen ended up with the ball and sank the two clinching free throws.  Miami wins, 103-100.  Lost in all of this were a couple of HUGE rebounds and two key blocked shots by Chris Bosh that probably made the difference in the game.

An instant classic.  A game that we will be talking about for a long time, yet it is only the game that sets up a Game 7 tomorrow night.  To paraphrase Erik Spoelstra’s words after the game, “The two best words in team sports --- Game Seven”.  The Heat and Spurs will meet in a winner-take-all game tomorrow night at the AAA.  Tipoff at 9:00 pm, and you can watch it on ABC, Channel 10 on South Florida.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Heat are one win away from their second consecutive NBA title.  (In all fairness, so are the Spurs).  Miami went 16-7 in last year’s postseason as they won the championship.  What is their record in this year’s playoffs and finals series so far?  Tell you later, alligator.

Quotes after the game:

LeBron James:

“It was by far the best game I’ve ever been a part of.  The ups and downs, the roller coaster, the emotions, good and bad, throughout the whole game.  To be part of something like this, you would never be able to recreate once you’re done playing the game.”

Dwyane Wade:

“Only thing you can do when everything looks dim and dark, you just have to keep going.  We played to the last minute, the last second, and it was evident that we played that wey.”

Manu Ginobili:

It’s a tough moment.  We were a few seconds away from winning the championship and we let it go.  A couple of rebounds that we didn’t catch, a tough 3 by Ray (Allen), a couple of missed free throws.  It’s very tough.  A very tough moment.”

Coach Gregg Popovich:

“It was a hell of a game.”

The Heat responded on the court when the NBA started setting up for the trophy award ceremony before the game was over.  Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports:

After 3,230 three-pointers in his glorious NBA career, Ray Allen hit what could be the most important one in NBA Finals history:

Even the great coaches make questionable moves.  Dan Wetzel from Yahoo! Sports breaks it down:

Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel is, by far, the best basketball writer in the country.  Here’s his blog after last night’s classic:

The Marlins lost a heartbreaker last night in Arizona against the NL-west leading Diamondbacks 3-2.  Paul Goldschmidt provided the big blow with the walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the D-Backs the win.  The Fish wasted a terrific effort by Nathan Eovaldi, who returned from the DL and threw six innings, giving up only three hits and two runs.  Derek Dietrich and Adeiny Hechavarria drove in the Marlins’ runs.  They return to the field this afternoon, at 3:40 pm Miami time.  Trevor Cahill starts for Arizona, Jose Fernandez will toe the rubber for the Marlins.  You can watch the game on Fox Sports Florida.

The Fish are still the worst run-scoring team in MLB, with 218 runs in their 70 games.  Here are the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM           W-L       Runs
Marlins 22-48 218
Dodgers 29-39 240
Nationals 34-36 243
White Sox 29-39 246
Mariners 32-40 252

In the major leagues yesterday, in the American League,

Red Sox 5 Rays 1 (Game 1)
Red Sox 3 Rays 1 (Game 2)
Jonny Gomes walk-off two run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Red Sox the sweep.  In the first game, David Ortiz drove in three runs.

Indians 4 Royals 3
The Indians scored three runs in the eighth inning.

Orioles 5 Tigers 2
Adam Jones hit a three-run homer, JJ Hardy connected long distance with a runner on.

A’s 6 Rangers
Brandon Moss and John Jaso each hit solo homers.

Twins 7 White Sox 5
Ryan Doumit delivered the go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning.

Mariners 3         Angels 2 (10 innings)
Kendrys Morales drove in the winning run.  Raul Ibañez and Justin Smoak connected long distance in the win.

Blue Jays 8 Rockies 3
Edwin Encarnacion homered and drove in three runs, JP Arencibia also went yard and drove in two runs.

Astros 10 Brewers 1
Matt Dominguez went 2-3 with a grand slam and finished with five RBI.  SIDE NOTE:  Trading Dominguez for a decrepit Carlos Lee last year will probably go down as one of the worst trades ever made by the Marlins.

The game scheduled last night between the Dodgers and the Yankees was postponed by rain and will be made up today as part of a day-night doubleheader.

Over in the National League,

Mets 4 Braves 3 (Game 1)
Mets 6 Braves 1 (Game 2)
The Mets’ two top pitching prospects led them to the sweep over the first-place Braves.  Matt Harvey took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in game 1 and struck out 13.  Zack Wheeler allowed only four hits in six scoreless innings to win his major league debut in game 2.

Phillies 4 Nationals 2
Cliff Lee won his seventh straight decision to improve to 9-2 this season, giving up only two runs on five hits in his eight innings of work.

Pirates 4 Reds 0
Pedro Alvarez drove in a pair of runs.

Cubs 4 Cardinals 2
Ryan Sweeney and Cody Ransom homered and Jeff Samardzija pitched into the ninth inning.

Giants 5 Padres 4
Juan Perez drove in the deciding run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

More bad news on the injury front for the already-depleted Yankees:

The news is a little better for the Mets as their future is looking a little bit rosier with their stud young starters Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler:

David Schoenfield of ESPN and I both feel the same way - it is damn time for MLB to let the Oakland A’s move to San Jose.  The stadium situation in Oakland is more than embarrassing:
