The Marlins salvaged a split of their four game series against Washington yesterday, beating the Nats 5-3.  Down 2-0 in the third, Carlos Lee drove in two with a single, and two batters later, Hanley Ramirez absolutely crushed a home run off the Tower of Terror.  Emilio Bonifacio drove in the fifth run with a suicide squeeze.  The Fish turned four double plays behind Carlos Zambrano, who improved his record to 5-7.  The team is off to Chicago, where they open a three game series against the Cubs tonight, then they hit Pittsburgh for a three game series against the surprising Pirates.  

Can somebody explain to me why Justin Ruggiano was benched the last two games?  All this guy has done since June 1st is hit .385, with an on-base percentage of .451, and a slugging percentage of .730.  Those numbers put him only behind Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and rookie phenom Mike Trout of the Angels.  I understand that these numbers cannot possibly continue (???), but why not ride this guy as long as you can?  Please don’t feed me the righty-lefty thing, either.  I know the last two starters the Marlins faced were right handed, but Ruggiano is hitting .346 against right handers this season.  A team that finished last season with the worst batting average in their history, .247, and is even worse this year, at .241, needs all the help it can get.

Juan Carlos Oviedo, the artist formerly known as Leo Nuñez, has been diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his elbow and will be out of action indefinitely.  

In other baseball news, the Yankees keep on trucking.  Last night, local product Raul Ibañez  broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eight inning with a grand slam and the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.  The Yankees now lead the AL East by 9 games,  the biggest division lead in baseball.  With the loss, Toronto falls into the cellar of the AL east, behind the Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Jays lost Jose Bautista with a wrist injury during the game, and will know more about the extent of the injury after an MRI today.  The Cincinnati Reds, who lead the NL Central by a game over the Pirates, will be without first baseman Joey Votto for at least four weeks.  Votto had arthroscopic knee surgery this weekend.  Cincinnati will miss Votto and his league-leading on-base percentage of .465, but they can take solace from the fact that 24 of their next 27 games are against teams with a losing record.  The Atlanta Braves got a great performance on Sunday from former All Star Ben Sheets, and are looking to extend their seven game winning streak tonight against the San Francisco Giants.  The Giants roll into Atlanta having swept the Houston Astros to begin the second half.  The Braves have been rumored to be in the mix to obtain Zack Greinke from Milwaukee, but would only do so if they could sign Greinke to a long-term deal.  The White Sox are also very interested, and the Detroit Tigers are also after a top of the line starting pitcher.  The Brewers have scratched Greinke from making his next start while they sort out the trade offers.

In other trade rumors, a lot of teams are in on Arizona outfielder Justin Upton, including the Yankees.  The Philadelphia Phillies could become sellers at any time, and Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, and Cole Hamels could end up elsewhere.  Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza of the Cubs are popular starters that are available, and Cuban shortstop Yunel Escobar could be on the trading block as well, possibly to the Oakland A’s.  The Blue Jays feel that Adeiny Hechavarria is ready to move up to the majors.    

In the NBA,  Dwight Howard is still property of the Orlando Magic, just as Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.  

The 2012 version of the Dream Team had trouble last night in an exhibition game against Brazil. The Americans fell behind by 10 points early, and only led by seven with a little over four minutes left in the game.  LeBron James led the Americans with 30 points, including 14 in the deciding fourth period, as they beat Brazil 80-69.  They will next take on Great Britain in Manchester, England on Thursday, before facing Argentina and Spain in Barcelona, their final two exhibition games before the Olympics.    

In NFL news, Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens and Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears signed long term contracts with their teams, while wide receivers Dwayne Bowe of the KC Chiefs and Wes Welker of the NE Patriots will play with one year “franchise tag” contracts this coming season.  Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Dez Bryant was arrested on a family violence charge in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto, where he lives.  Denver Bronco defensive end Elvis Dumervil was arrested on South Beach this past weekend and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a traffic incident in which Dumervil and another man got into an argument with a woman and displayed weapons.

Los Marlins vencieron a los Washington Nationals ayer, 5-3, para dividir honores en su serie de cuatro juegos.  Perdiendo 2-0 en el tercer inning, Carlos Lee empato la cosa con un hit impulsador, y dos bateadores despues, Hanley Ramirez disparo un jonron que termino en la base de la torre del terror para poner a los Marlins arriba, 4-2.  Emilio Bonifacio impulso la quinta carrera del juego con un squeeze play.  Los Peces apoyaron a Carlos Zambrano con cuatro doble plays.  Zambrano mejoro su record a 5-7.  El equipo esta en Chicago, donde esta noche abren una serie de tres juegos con los Cubs.  El fin de semana estaran en Pittsburgh, donde tienen una serie de tres juegos con los Piratas.

En otras noticias en el beisbol, los Yankees siguen en fuego.  Anoche, Raul Ibañez, talento local de aqui de Miami Sunset High, rompio un empate de 2-2 en la parte baja del octavo inning con un jonron con las bases llenas y los Yankees venciaron a los Toronto Blue Jays, 6-3.  Los Yankees tienen una ventaja de nueve juegos en la division del este, la mayor ventaja en las grandes ligas.  Con la derrota, Toronto cayo en el sotano de la division, detras de las Medias Rotas y los Tampa Bay Rays.  Los Jays perdieron a Jose Bautista con una lesion en la muñeca durante el juego de anoche, y sabran un poco mas despues de un MRI en el dia de hoy.  Los Rojos de Cincinnati, que estan en primer lugar en la division central de la liga nacional por un juego sobre los Piratas, estaran sin la primera base Joey Votto por cuatro semanas por lo menos.  Votto fue sometido a una operacion artroscopica de la rodilla.  Cincinnati va a extrañar a Votto and su promedio en base de .465, el mejor en la liga, pero saben que  24 de los proximos 27 juegos son contra equipos que tienen records por debajo de .500.  Los Bravos de Atlanta recibieron una gran actaucion de Ben Sheets el domingo, y buscan extender su racha de siete victorias consecutivas esta noche contra los Gigantes de San Francisco.  Los Gigantes llegan a Atlanta despues de barrer con los Astros de Houston este fin de semana.  Los Bravos estan entre los equipos que estan tratando de obtener al pitcher abridor Zack Greinke de Milwaukee, pero solamente lo harian si pueden llegar a un acuerdo con Greinke en un contrato a largo plazp.  Las Medias Blancas de Chicago y los Tigres de Detroit tambien estan atras de un pitcher abridor de cabezera.  Mientras deciden lo que van a hacer, los Brewers sacaron a Greinke de la rotacion para su proximo juego.
