The trade deadline day is here, and I expect a flurry of activity as we approach the 4:00 pm deadline.  As I discussed here the last couple of days, the Phillies are in sell mode.  Reports are that Shane Victorino has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers already, but I am also hearing that the Cincinnati Reds are in the mix.  The Fightin‘ Phils are dangling pitchers Cliff Lee and Joe Blanton, as well as outfielders Hunter Pence and Juan Pierre.  The Dodgers bolstered their bullpen by acquiring reliever Brandon League from the Seattle Mariners for a couple of minor leaguers.  The Chicago Cubs are unloading players.  They sent catcher Geovanny Soto to the Texas Rangers for a minor league pitcher and cash.  They also completed a trade with the Atlanta Braves, sending pitcher Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson for two pitching prospects, Jaye Chapman and Aroldys Vizcaino.  Still pending for the Cubs: outfielder Alfonso Soriano and pitchers Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster.  The Toronto Blue Jays sent outfielder Travis Snyder to Pittsburgh for pitcher Brad Lincoln.  Lot of noise in Boston about potential trades, but some people in their organization still believe that they are not out of the wild card race.  

It is relatively quiet on the Marlins front.  We have all heard during the last couple of days that they are not in a hurry to trade Josh Johnson.  I am hearing today that the Arizona Diamondbacks have been in touch and they really want a top of the rotation starter.  Sources also tell me that the Fish are desperately trying to unload the recently acquired Carlos Lee.  I must repeat what I’ve been saying since they got him:  WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING WHEN THEY TRADED FOR LEE?    

The Atlanta Braves came into last night’s game against the Marlins having lost 12 games in a row on mondays this season, 16 in a row monday losses dating back to last year.  The streak is over as the Braves beat up on Mark Buehrle and the Marlins 8-2.  The second game in their four game series is tonight at 7:10 pm. Ricky Nolasco will toe the rubber for the Marlins, Kris Medlen will be on the mound for Atlanta.  Wade LeBlanc will make his first start of the season on Wednesday against Ben Sheets, and Nathan Eovaldi will match up against Mike Minor on Thursday.  

The Yankees lost last night against the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4, and got a huge scare when Mark Teixeira injured his wrist diving for a ball.  X-Rays and tests this morning showed no damage, so they are breathing a little easier.  The Yanks may need to add a pitcher before the deadline and they also may be looking for some depth at third base.  The Yankees’ lead in the American League East is 6 1/2 games over the Orioles.  Good day yesterday for Kendrys Morales.  The Angel slugger connected a two-run homer and a grand slam from different sides of the plate in the sixth inning as the Angels pounded the Texas Rangers 15-8.  The San Diego Padres ended Cincinnati’s ten game winning streak with an 11-5 victory over the Reds. Yonder Alonso had four hits in that game for the Padres, including three doubles. 

In the 2012 Olympics, China and the United States are 1-2 in the medal race.  The Chinese have won 19 total medals: ten gold, five silver, and three bronze.  The Americans are at 18, with six gold, seven silver, and five bronze.  Highlights of today’s events include the team finals in women’s gymnastics, the US Women’s soccer team takes on North Korea, the 200 meter finals in swimming, and the US basketball team takes on Tunisia.

Llego el dia de la verdad en el beisbol, y los equipos tienen hasta las cuatro de la tarde para completar cambios.  Como les vengo diciendo hace un par de dias, los Phillies estan vendiendo.  Fuentes estan reportando que el jardinero Shane Victorino esta rumbo a los Dodgers de Los Angeles, aunque otras fuentes estan reportando que los Rojos de Cincinnati estan en la comida tambien.  Los Phillies estan tratando de salirse de los lanzadores Cliff Lee y Joe Blanton, y los jardineros Hunter Pence y Juan Pierre.  Los Dodgers mejoraron su bullpen con la adquisicion del relevista Brandon League de los Mariners de Seattle por un par de jugadores de ligas menores.  Los Chicago Cubs tambien estan limpiando su casa.  Enviaron al catcher Geovanny Soto a los Texas Rangers por un pitcher de ligas menores y dinero.  Los Cubs tambien completaron un cambio con los Bravos de Atlanta, enviando al pitcher abridor Paul Maholm y al jardinero Reed Johnson por los lanzadores Jaye Chapman y Aroldys Vizcaino.  Los Cubs tienen pendiente todavia cerrar posibles cambios del jardinero Alfonso Soriano y los pitchers Matt Garza y Ryan Dempster.  Los Toronto Blue Jays enviaron al jardinero Travis Snyder a Pittsburgh por el pitcher Brad Lincoln.  Mucho ruido en Boston sobre algunos posibles cambios, pero varias personas en la gerencia y en la organizacion piensan que todavia estan peleando para el wild card.    

Las cosas estan bastante tranquilas aqui en Miami con los Marlins, por lo menos en este momento.  Los ultimos dias hemos estado oyendo que los Peces no tienen ningun apuro en cambiar a Josh Johnson.  Las malas lenguas me estan diciendo hoy que los Arizona Diamondbacks han estado en contacto, y que estan buscando un abridor de cabezera.  Fuentes estan reportando que los Marlins estan locos por salirse de Carlos Lee.  Repito lo que vengo diciendo desde que trajeron a Lee:  QUE DIABLOS ESTABAN PENSANDO CUANDO HICIERON ESE CAMBIO??    

Los Bravos de Atlanta entraron al juego de anoche con los Marlins con doce derrotas consecutivas los lunes esta temporada, 16 derrotas consecutivas si contamos la temporada pasada.  La racha al fin murio anoche, a costilla de los Peces.  Atlanta apabullo a Mark Buehrle y a los Peces, 8-2.  El segundo juego de la serie de cuatro es esta noche a las 7:10.  Ricky Nolasto abrira en la lomita para Miami, Kris Medlen abre para Atlanta.  Wade LeBlanc abrira su primer juego de la temporada mañana jueves contra Ben Sheets, y el jueves, Nathan Eovaldi abre contra Mike Minor.  

Los Yankees perdieron anoche contra los Orioles de Baltimore, 5-4, y recibieron un gran susto cuando Mark Teixeira se lesiono la muñeca al tirarse para tratar de fildear un batazo.  Rayos X y otras pruebas esta mañana fueron negativas, y el equipo esta mucho mas tranquilo hoy.  Los Yankees probablemente van a necesitar agregar un abridor antes de esta tarde, y tambien quisieran agregar una tercera base, por si las moscas, mientras que Alex Rodriguez se recupera.  La ventaja de los Yankees en la division del este es de 6 juegos y medio sobre los Orioles.  

Buen dia ayer para Kendrys Morales.  El toletero de los Angelinos conecto larga distancia con un hombre en base y con las bases llenas de ambos lados del plato y lo logro en el mismo inning.  Eso no se da todos los dias. Victoria para los Angelinos sobre los Texas Rangers, 15-8.  Los Padres de San Diego pusieron fin a la racha de diez victorias consecutivas de Cincinnati, ganandole a los Rojos 11-5.  Yonder Alonso bateo cuatro hits para los Padres, incluyendo tres tubeis.  

En las olimpiadas, China y los Estados Unidos estan peleando para el liderrazgo de las medallas. Los Chinos tienen 19 medallas en total: 10 de oro, 6 de plata, y 3 de bronce.  Los Americanos tienen 18 en total:  6 de oro, 7 de plata, y 5 de bronce.  Entre los paises latinoamericanos, Brasil tiene tres medallas, una de cada metal, Colombia y Mejico tienen dos medallas de plata cada uno, y Cuba tiene una de plata tambien.    Entre los eventos de hoy,  tenemos las finales de gimnasia, el equipo de soccer de mujeres Americanas se enfrentan a Corea del Norte, y el conjunto de basketball de Estados Unidos se enfrenta a Tunisia.
