The last two minutes of the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphin games this weekend were outstanding for the home teams.
On saturday, the Heat trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-101 with 1:58 left in the game. No problem for LeBron James and company, as they ran off 9 unanswered points to defeat the pesky Cavs 110-108. The big four did all the damage - LeBron finished with 30 points, Chris Bosh had 23, Dwayne Wade added 18, and Ray Allen contributed 17 points, 15 in the fourth quarter. Miami is off again until Thursday, when the San Antonio Spurs visit the AAA.

Yesterday, the Miami Dolphins got a glimpse of what the future will bring as rookie QB Ryan Tannehill directed game tying and game-winning drives in the fourth quarter to lead the Fins to a 24-21 win over the Seattle Seahawks. After tying the game 21-21 on a 29-yard TD pass to Charles Clay, Miami got the ball back with 1:32 remaining in the game at their own 10-yard line. Head coach Joe Philbin decided to put the game in Tannehill’s hands and played for the win. Tannehill drove the team down the field and kicker Dan Carpenter closed it out with a 43-yard field goal as time expired. Great win for the Fins, who return to the field next Sunday, again here at the Seven Names Stadium, against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Game time for that one is 1:00 pm, and, if it sells out, will be televised by Channel 4, CBS, here in Miami.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: In yesterday’s game between the Dolphins and Seattle, Leon Washington of the Seahawks returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the eighth time in his career, tying the NFL all-time record. Who is he tied with? Tell you later, alligator.
In college football, the University of Miami Hurricanes got by the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday by the score of 52-45. The Canes end their season 7-5, as they sit and wait for the NCAA to come down with penalties and punishment after they complete this seemingly endless investigation. For the second consecutive season, the Canes self-imposed a post-season ban on themselves. This year, it cost them an appearance in the ACC Championship game, and a bowl game as well. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, FIU finished a disappointing 3-9 season with another close loss, this one in overtime to Louisiana-Monroe, 23-17. Five of their nine losses were by one score or less.
Notre Dame remained atop the BCS rankings after defeating USC. 22-13. The Fighting Irish will play in the BCS championship game against the winner of the SEC Championship game this Saturday between #2 Alabama and #3 Georgia. The top 10 BCS rankings, which include SIX teams from the Southeast Conference:
1 Notre Dame 12-0
2 Alabama 11-1
3 Georgia 11-1
4 Florida 11-1
5 Oregon 11-1
6 Kansas State 11-1
7 LSU 10-2
8 Stanford 10-2
9 Texas A&M 10-2
10 South Carolina 10-2
The Tampa Bay Rays and third baseman Evan Longoria signed a long-term contract extension that will keep Longoria in Tampa for a long time. Longoria will now earn $136 million from 2013 through 2022, with a club option for 2023.
It is kind of quiet around Major League baseball, as the Winter Meetings start next Monday, December 3rd, in Nashville. I fully expect a lot of trade activity during those meetings, as well as decisions on some of the popular names among the free agents, such as Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Mike Napoli, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, Adam LaRoche, Kyle Lohse, and former Marlins Cody Ross and Anibal Sanchez. The Boston Red Sox look like they’re trying to get a head start on these meetings, and they are involved in talks with Ross, Napoli, LaRoche, and Swisher.
Outfielder BJ Upton expects to make a decision this week on where he is going to sign, and the clubhouse leader at this point may be the Atlanta Braves. Ichiro Suzuki is leaning towards staying with the Yankees, who are also waiting for Andy Pettite to decide on whether or not to return, as well as Mariano Rivera, who already said he wants to come back.
At this point, nothing to report on the Miami Marlins, although there is a rumor out there that they may be looking to trade Billy the Marlin to either Red Lobster or Long John Silver’s. Since the team also seems to be looking for former Marlins to bring back, (not Cody or Anibal, of course) some of the names that are still available out there (all washed-up or mediocre at best) are Alfredo Amezaga, Alex Gonzalez, Kevin Gregg, Jeremy Hermida, Nick Johnson, Logan Kensing, Hector Luna, Guillermo Mota, Donnie Murphy, Miguel Olivo, Juan Carlos Oviedo (Leo Nuñez), Ronny Paulino, Brad Penny, Jose Veras, and Carlos Zambrano. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: In yesterday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the Seattle Seahawks, Leon Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the eighth time in his career, tying the NFL record. Who is he tied with? Josh Cribbs also has eight kickoff returns for TD. If you combine kickoff and punt returns, the NFL all-time leader is University of Miami product Devin Hester. Hester has returned 12 punts for touchdowns and has 5 kickoff returns for TD’s.
