The Miami Heat finally return to the court tonight, again at the AAA, against Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and the rest of the San Antonio Spurs. Heat forward Shane Battier will be out for a few games due to a knee strain, an injury that seems to be minor, although the number of games he will miss is yet to be determined. Battier said he would be “back in a few”. After the game against the Spurs, the Heat welcome the Brooklyn Nets to the AAA on Saturday, go on a quick trip to Washington DC for a game against the Wizards on Tuesday, and they return home for six straight games, beginning with the Knicks on Thursday, December 6th.

Free agent outfielder BJ Upton is no more, reaching agreement with the Atlanta Braves on a five-year, $75 million contract. Good deal for the Braves, who needed a center fielder as well as another right-handed bat with pop, and they get the top position player available in free agency for his ages 28-32 seasons. Upton is an very good defensive center fielder, and has raw power and a history during his career of discipline at the plate. Upton hit 28 homers last year with Tampa Bay, although his .248 batting average was not up to par. The Braves continue to be an organization with a plan, and they continue to plug in holes where needed, while maintaining some fiscal stability.
The Yankees signed Andy Pettite to a one-year deal for $12 million, and are now trying to finalize a contract with Mariano Rivera. Ryan Madson, who missed all of last season due to injury, signed a one-year, incentive-laden contract with the LA Angels.
The Hall of Fame announced the names of players on the ballot for the first time, and let the steroid fireworks begin. Among the 24 names up for election for the first time are Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, and Curt Schilling. The top holdover candidates are Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell, and Tim Raines. It is going to get ugly.
Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt suggests a new voting process for the Hall, in which the entire pool of voters all vote for 10 finalists, and then set up a committee to select the inductees from that list of 10. Schmidt’s plan has some merit, as players from the “steroid era” enter the ballot. Writers are fully divided on what to do about these players, with some voters who won’t vote for anyone who used performance-enhancing drugs, but you also have voters that won’t vote for players who they suspects used PED’s, while some voters won’t vote for muscle-bound players.
The Winter Meetings start next Monday, December 3rd, in Nashville. I fully expect a lot of trade activity during those meetings, as well as decisions on some of the popular names among the free agents, such as Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Mike Napoli, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, Adam LaRoche, Kyle Lohse, and former Marlins Cody Ross and Anibal Sanchez.
TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Who were the first five players inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame? Tell you later, alligator.
The Miami Dolphins are getting ready to take on the New England Patriots on Sunday at the Seven-Names Stadium, something that is never an easy task. Tom Brady is playing at his usual level, so the Dolphins defense will have their work cut out for them this week. The Pats have won five games in a row, and during those five games, they are averaging 44 points per game. In his last four games here in Miami, he has completed 91-126 passes (72.2%) with an average of 344 yards per game, 13 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. As Fins coach Joe Philbin said, “We’re going to have to play our best game of the year to win.” Game time on Sunday is 1:00 pm, and it will be televised by Channel 4, CBS, here in Miami.
