The hammer of the NCAA has taken a detour as the investigation into violations by the University of Miami is now focused on improper conduct by the NCAA itself in handling the complex UM case.  The Hurricanes' athletic compliance practices have been probed by the NCAA for nearly two years. Allegations of wrongdoing involving Miami's football and men's basketball programs became widely known in August 2011 when Yahoo Sports published accusations brought by former UM booster and all-around scumbag Nevin Shapiro, who is serving a 20-year term in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Here are more details on the situation, courtesy of Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.

The Hurricanes basketball team, ranked #25 in the country, must have been happy to hear the news of their (at least) temporary reprieve.  The Canes hosted #1 Duke last night in Coral Gables, and beat them into submission, 90-63.  It was the third worst defeat EVER for a #1 team, and the worst defeat suffered by the Blue Devils since January, 1984.

The football Canes may be close to hiring a new offensive coordinator, and it is a familiar name here in South Florida.  The Miami Herald is reporting that James Coley, the offensive coordinator at Florida State University, is considering an offer to join Al Golden’s staff here in Miami.  Coley grew up in Miami and attended Miami High, and is considered one of the best recruiters in college football.  FIU should have brought him as head coach when they made the mistake of firing Mario Cristobal.

The Miami Heat returned to the hardwood last night at the AAA against the Toronto Raptors, and the effects of a five-day rest showed.  It took an overtime period, but the Heat managed to prevail, 123-116.  Miami fell behind by as many as 15 points in the first half, but then it was time for the cream to rise to the top.  Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 35 points, while LeBron James put up a triple double, finishing with 31 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.  In a rare occurrence, Miami outrebounded Toronto 53-28, and they were led by Chris Bosh’s 12 rebounds, and Udonis Haslem, who collected 10 boards.  The Heat return to action tomorrow night at the AAA against the Detroit Pistons.  Game tiime tomorrow is 7:30 pm, and you can watch the game on Sun Sports on your cable or satellite system.

In the NBA last night,

Atlanta 104 Charlotte 92
Big game for Josh Smith, who finished with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists.

Chicago 85 Detroit 82
Jimmy Butler led six Chicago players in double figures with 18 points

Denver 105 Houston 95
Ty Lawson led the way with 21 points, Wilson Chandler scored 20 points off the bench

Memphis 106 LA Lakers 93
The Lakers continue to struggle as they suffered their fourth straight loss.

Brooklyn 91 Minnesota 83
Brook Lopez scored a game-high 22 points, Joe Johnson and Deron Williams each added 18 points in the victory.

San Antonio 106 New Orleans 102
Tony Parker had 24 points and 13 assists

Utah 92 Washington 88
Paul Millsap scored 16 points to go with 15 boards

Portland 100 Indiana 80
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points

Phoenix 106 Sacramento 96
Luis Scola scored 21 points, Michael Beasley added 19

Golden State 104 Oklahoma City 99
Stephen Curry led the way with 31 points and seven assists, David Lee had 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Atlanta Braves may be inching closer to working out a trade for Arizona left fielder Justin Upton.  If they can work it out, Justin would join his brother BJ in the Atlanta outfield.  Who was the only team ever to have three brothers in the same outfield? Tell you later, alligator.

Congratulations to the Marlins ownership for again causing us to lose out on an All Star game.  Everyone had their sights set on getting the 2015 midsummer classic, but thanks to the dismantling of the team this winter, MLB has again decided to punish Miami and will award the 2015 game to Cincinnati.  If this sounds familiar to you all, it should.  We were supposed to also host the 2000 All Star game, but after the 1998 dismantling of the 1997 world championship team, MLB also dissed South Florida.

In other baseball news, the Atlanta Braves are working hard in trying to trade for Arizona outfielder Justin Upton, who would join his brother BJ in the Braves outfield.  The NL East is really strong.

Speaking of strong, I love reading about Giancarlo Stanton.  Here is a today’s featured article with good scouting information and stats on the Marlins’ Man Child (El NiƱo Hombre).

Dear Santa Claus  Tooth Fairy  Cupid  Easter Bunny  Jeffrey Loria and minions:

What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team?  You’re still here?  What are you waiting for? The Super Bowl?  Valentine’s day?  Easter?  Next year’s HOF election?

Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community.  This latest dismantling now cost Miami the 2015 All-Star game.  You really didn’t think that MLB would award you the game after this offseason, did you?

How soon before you get rid of Giancarlo Stanton for another group of so-called prospects, as you continue to allow your management to “sell low and buy high”.  Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.

All kidding aside, your window of opportunity to get out of town is opening up in just a few weeks.  The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013.  After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team.  You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone.  Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.

We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.

Here’s the answer to today’s question:  The Atlanta Braves may be inching closer to working out a trade for Arizona left fielder Justin Upton.  If they can work it out, Justin would join his brother BJ in the Atlanta outfield, alongside Jayson Heyward.  Who was the only team ever to have three brothers playing in the same outfield?  The San Francisco Giants had the three Alou brothers, Felipe, Matty, and Jesus, in the same outfield way back in 1963.  It was only for two games, on September 10th, and September 15th of that year.  The Giants traded Felipe to the Braves after the 1963 season.
