The Miami Heat hit the hardwood tonight at the AAA against the Detroit Pistons.  The Pistons gave Miami all they wanted in their only encounter so far this season, when the Heat blew a 32-17 lead after the first period and lost to Detroit 109-99 up at the Palace of Auburn Hills.  Miami played that game without Dwyane Wade, who was serving a one-game suspension from the league for inadvertantly kicking Ramon Sessions in the previous game.  Game time tonight at the AAA is 7:30 pm, and you can watch the game on Sun Sports on your cable or satellite system.  The Heat starts another road trip this Sunday, in Boston, against the Celtics in a nationally-televised encounter at 1:00 pm on ABC (Channel 10 in Miami).  They continue on the road with a game on Wednesday night in Brooklyn against the Nets, before continuing on to Indianapolis on Friday the first against the Pacers, and Super Bowl Sunday in Toronto against the Raptors.

In the NBA last night,

Toronto 97 Orlando 95
DeMar DeRozan hit the game-winner at the buzzer

New York 89 Boston 86
Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points

Phoenix 93 LA Clippers 88
Goran Dragic had 24 points, 8 assists, and five rebounds.  The Clippers have lost three in a row.

The University of Miami football team has hired James Coley as their new offensive coordinator.  Coley leaves Florida State University to take this position.  Coley grew up in Miami and attended Miami High, and is considered one of the best recruiters in college football.  Excellent move by the Hurricanes and head coach Al Golden.  FIU should have brought him as head coach when they made the mistake of firing Mario Cristobal.

Everyone is waiting to see what happens in the NCAA’s botched investigation of the University of Miami.  Here are a couple of opinions:

First, from the Miami Herald

Second, from the Palm Beach Post

In Las Vegas, the San Francisco 49ers are still a 3 1/2-point favorites to win the Super Bowl over the Baltimore Ravens.  The over-under on total points scored is now at 47 1/2.

Today’s featured article brings us 47 predictions for Super Bowl 47 (all in good fun) from David Fleming of ESPN the Magazine.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The San Francisco 49ers are 5-0 in Super Bowls all time.  What team is winless in four appearances in the big game, and who was their quarterback?  Tell you later, alligator.

We again want to take a minute to congratulate the Marlins ownership for causing us to lose out on another All Star game.  Everyone had their sights set on getting the 2015 midsummer classic, but thanks to the dismantling of the team this winter, MLB has again decided to punish Miami and will award the 2015 game to Cincinnati.  If this sounds familiar to you all, it should.  We were supposed to also host the 2000 All Star game, but after the 1998 dismantling of the 1997 world championship team, MLB also dissed South Florida.

In other baseball news, the Atlanta Braves got their man and completed a trade for Arizona outfielder Justin Upton.  The Braves sent infielder/outfielder Martin Prado, pitcher Randall Delgado and three minor leaguers, picher Zeke Sprull, shortstop Nick Ahmed, and first baseman Brandon Drury to Arizona for Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson.  Tough for the Braves to trade a clubhouse leader like Prado, but the upside to the trade is tremendous.  That outfield of Justin Upton, BJ Upton, and Jayson Heyward looks formidable.  Great trade for the Bravos.

The Marlins continue to make little splashes in Jeffrey Loria’s kiddie pool, as they signed pitchers Kevin Slowey and Mitch Talbot to minor league contracts, with invites to spring training.  Neither one of these gentlemen pitched in the major leagues in 2012.  The Fish also signed catcher Craig Tatum to the same minor league deal, with an invite to spring training.  Tatum also didn’t play in the majors in 2012.

In a move that may raise some eyebrows, the Marlins have a minor league offer out to former Dolphin failure Pat White.  I give you my word that I am NOT making this up.

Dear Santa Claus  Tooth Fairy  Cupid  Easter Bunny  Jeffrey Loria and minions:

What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team?  You’re still here?  What are you waiting for? The Super Bowl?  Valentine’s day?  Easter?  Next year’s HOF election?

Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community.  This latest dismantling now cost Miami the 2015 All-Star game.  You really didn’t think that MLB would award you the game after this offseason, did you?

How soon before you get rid of Giancarlo Stanton for another group of so-called prospects, as you continue to allow your management to “sell low and buy high”.  Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.

All kidding aside, your window of opportunity to get out of town is opening up in just a few weeks.  The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013.  After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team.  You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone.  Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.

We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.

Here’s the answer to today’s question:  The San Francisco 49ers are 5-0 in Super Bowls all time.  What team is winless in four appearances in the big game, and who was their quarterback?  The Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Twins are both 0-4 in their Super Bowls. Hall of Famer and former University of Miami QB Jim Kelly was at the helm for Buffalo in their four losses, Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton took the snaps for three of the four Viking losses.  Joe Kapp was the QB in their other loss.
