The Miami Heat had mixed results this weekend.  On Friday, they beat up on the Detroit Pistons 110-88.  Dwyane Wade led the way with 29 points, while LeBron James added 23 points, to go with seven assists and seven rebounds.  On Sunday, the Heat were in Boston, where they always have trouble, and the proud Celtics were reeling in the middle of a six-game losing streak and they were playing without point guard Rajon Rondo, who is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.  The Celtics defeated the Heat in double overtime 100-98, their ninth straight regular-season win over Miami in Boston and their 17th in the last 21 regular-season encounters in Beantown.  The Heat will be visiting the White House today for their congratulatory meeting with President Obama for winning the NBA title.  Next game is Wednesday, in Brooklyn, against the Nets.  Game time will be at 8:00 pm and it will be televised on Sun Sports and on ESPN.  This road trip continues in Indianapolis on Friday, and Super Bowl Sunday in Toronto.

In the rest of the NBA yesterday,

LA Lakers 105 Oklahoma City 96
For the second straight game, Kobe Bryant finished with more assists than shot attempts.  The Lakers have won two in a row.  Mamba finished with 21 points and 14 assists.

Detroit 104 Orlando 102

The University of Miami basketball team has now won 7 games in a row, and last night they pummeled rival Florida State 71-47 to improve their season record to 15-3, including 6-0 in ACC play.  The polls come out today and Miami should improve on last week’s #25 ranking, after beating the #1 team in the country Duke last Wednesday.

The FIU basketball team has also been playing well, winning 7 out of their last 8 games under rookie head coach Richard Pitino.  Last night, however, the Panthers lost a heartbreaker to South Alabama, in Mobile, 70-68.  FIU is 11-9 overall this season, 6-5 in Sun Belt Conference play.  Nice job so far by the younger Pitino.

South Florida is again in the news, and it is unfortunately not for a good reason.  MLB is investigating a number of “wellness” clinics in the area as this area is “ground zero” for performance-enhancing drugs that are still filtering into the sport.  Check out these two articles for more details:

First, from ESPN

Second, from the Miami Herald

In Las Vegas, the San Francisco 49ers remain a 3 1/2-point favorites to win the Super Bowl over the Baltimore Ravens.  The over-under on total points scored is now at 47 1/2.  The opening lines were 5 points and over/under of 49.

Today’s featured article is from Jim Caple of ESPN.  He looks at the last 25 years in baseball history through the 1988 Topps baseball cards set.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Last season, BJ and Justin Upton hit their respective 100th homers in the major leagues on the same day.  Which brothers are the combined leaders in home runs and which pitching brothers lead the way in combined wins? Tell you later, alligator.

We again want to take a minute to congratulate the Marlins ownership for causing us to lose out on another All Star game.  Everyone had their sights set on getting the 2015 midsummer classic, but thanks to the dismantling of the team this winter, MLB has again decided to punish Miami and will award the 2015 game to Cincinnati.  If this sounds familiar to you all, it should.  We were supposed to also host the 2000 All Star game, but after the 1998 dismantling of the 1997 world championship team, MLB also dissed South Florida.

Dear Santa Claus  Tooth Fairy  Cupid  Easter Bunny  Jeffrey Loria and minions:

What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team?  You’re still here?  What are you waiting for? The Super Bowl?  Valentine’s day?  Easter?  Next year’s HOF election?

Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community.  This latest dismantling now cost Miami the 2015 All-Star game.  You really didn’t think that MLB would award you the game after this offseason, did you?

How soon before you get rid of Giancarlo Stanton for another group of so-called prospects, as you continue to allow your management to “sell low and buy high”.  Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.

All kidding aside, your window of opportunity to get out of town is opening up in just a few weeks.  The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013.  After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team.  You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone.  Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.

We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.

Here’s the answer to today’s question:  Last season, BJ and Justin Upton hit their respective 100th homers in the major leagues on the same day.  Which brothers are the combined leaders in home runs and which pitching brothers lead the way in combined wins? The Upton brothers have a very long way to go to catch the Aaron Brothers, Hank and Tommie, who combined to hit 768 homers (755 by Hank).  The Niekro brothers, Phil and Joe, combined for 539 career wins.  (Phil won 318, Joe had 221 victories).
