The Miami Heat’s road trip got off to a bad start last night, as the Heaters fell to the Indiana Pacers 87-77. Rebounding, or lack thereof, was again the issue as Indiana out-rebounded Miami 55-36. Miami’s supporting cast was also nowhere to be found yesterday, as the big three combined to score 66 of the 77 points. No time to wallow in the mire as the team is now in Portland, where they take on the Trailblazers tomorrow night. Late night for Heat fans in Miami, game time on Thursday is 10:30pm, Miami time. The rest of the trip has the Heat playing the Sacramento Kings (Sat, Jan 12), the Utah Jazz (Mon, Jan 14), the Golden State Warriors (Wed, Jan 16), before closing out their trip the next night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: When was the last time the BBWAA did not elect a new member to the Hall of Fame? Tell you later, alligator.
In news around baseball, the Washington Nationals and first baseman Adam LaRoche finally came to an agreement on a new contract, a two-year deal worth $24 million, with a mutual option for 2015. The Nats are now looking at trading Mike Morse, and there is a lot of interest out there, including the Yankees. The Yankees’ GM, Brian Cashman, said yesterday that Derek Jeter will be in the opening day lineup as he comes back from the broken ankle he suffered in the playoffs. Alex Rodriguez will have surgery on his hip next week, and his doctor’s best guess at this time is that A-Rod will be ready to return after the All-Star break.
The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will be in the spotlight later today as we wait to see who the inductees for this year are. There is a distinct possibility that nobody gets the required 75% vote from the Baseball Writers of America to get in this year. Too many of these writers are hung up on whether or not anyone even suspected of PED use gets in. The leading candidates (as I see it) this year are Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, and Jack Morris, among others. Also eligible are Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro, but McGwire has said he wouldn’t vote for himself, and Palmeiro did test positive for PED’s after the rules were put in place. Any hall of fame who has managed to keep players like Minnie Miñoso, Tony Oliva, and Luis Tiant out of the hall is not believable. A hall of fame that has made Pete Rose ineligible, but elected convicted illegal drug traffickers and users has no credibility.
Today’s article of the day comes from Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, talking about the baseball hall of fame.
Dear Santa Claus Tooth Fairy Cupid Easter Bunny Jeffrey Loria and minions:
What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team? Christmas came and went! The New Year is here!!! What are you waiting for? Valentine’s day? Easter?
Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community. You allow your management to continue the policy of “sell low and buy high”. Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.
All kidding aside, you will soon have the window of opportunity you need to get out of town. The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013. After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team. You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone. Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.
We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.
Here’s the answer to today’s question. When was the last time the BBWAA did not elect a new member to the Hall of Fame? The year was 1996.

The college football season came to an end last night, and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide pummeled Notre Dame in the BCS Championship Game 42-14. The only time the game was close was at the opening kickoff. Total domination by Alabama, who wins their third national championship in the last four years. A tremendous run by Alabama, who are now undeniably among the greatest college football dynasties of all time, and putting Nick Saban at the top of any list that wants to talk about the best college football coach in the game. Congratulations to Alabama and Coach Saban. What a performance. Roll Tide!

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Today’s question is a simple one. Who is the only player in the history of major league baseball to play ate least one full season as a catcher and at least one full season at second base? Tell you later, alligator. Too easy, today.
