The hammer of the NCAA is closer to landing in Coral Gables. Two former Miami assistant coaches have been told they will be charged with ''unethical conduct'' when the NCAA presents the Hurricanes' athletic department with its notice of allegations.
Sources close to the situation spoke to The Associated Press yesterday on condition of anonymity because neither the NCAA or Miami have announced the contents of the long-awaited notice.
Other sources are also reporting that former UM basketball head coach Frank Haith, now the head coach at Missouri, will also be charged with failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance while at Miami, a charge that could potentially cost him his job at Missouri, presently ranked #22 in the nation.
The Miami Heat return to the hardwood tonight at the AAA against the Toronto Raptors. We will see the debut of 6’10” forward/center Chris “The Birdman” Andersen. The Heat still sit atop the Eastern Conference with the best record, 26-12, the Knicks have the second-best record in the East at 25-14. We’ve talked about the rebounding issues for the Heat, but one thing we haven’t focused on is the fact that this team is shooting a franchise-record 48.8 % from the field and 38.7 % from behind the 3-point arc. Game time tonight is 7:30 pm, and you can watch the game on Sun Sports on your cable or satellite system.
In the NBA last night,
Cleveland 95 Boston 90
Kyrie Irving tallied 40 points, including 11 of the final 13 points the Cavs scored in the game

Milwaukee 110 Philadelphia 102

The countdown continues as we are forced to live through the longest two weeks in sports as we listen and read every imaginable story that bored sportswriters and ESPN reporters can muster. The Harbaugh brothers, Ray Lewis, Colin Kaepernick and his tatoos, ENOUGH ALREADY. Is Ted Ginn really going to be playing in a Super Bowl? At least we have the Pro Bowl to look forward to this Sunday, the least-interesting, least attended, and least watched of all the all star games. Four Dolphins will participate in the non-game.
The Las Vegas oddsmakers are keeping busy. The 49ers are now a 3 1/2-point favorites to win the Super Bowl over the Ravens. (Could have had them at 4 1/2 or 5 right after the Sunday games). The over-under on total points scored is down to 47.
TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION (and a bit of history): Colin Kaepernick is the sixth QB to start a Super Bowl game after not starting any of his team’s first five games that season. Who are the others? Tell you later, alligator.
Congratulations to the Marlins ownership for again causing us to lose out on an All Star game. Everyone had their sights set on getting the 2015 midsummer classic, but thanks to the dismantling of the team this winter, MLB has again decided to punish Miami and will award the 2015 game to Cincinnati. If this sounds familiar to you all, it should. We were supposed to also host the 2000 All Star game, but after the 1998 dismantling of the 1997 world championship team, MLB also dissed South Florida.
Today’s spotlight article comes from Buster Olney of ESPN who rates the top ten outfields in the history of MLB. (MY PERSONAL NOTE: Olney’s #3 should be no worse than second and the 1975 Boston Red Sox outfield should have been ranked higher)
Today’s second spotlight article comes from Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel talking about the possibility of the Miami Heat trading for Pau Gasol or even for Dwight Howard
Dear Santa Claus Tooth Fairy Cupid Easter Bunny Jeffrey Loria and minions:
What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team? You’re still here? What are you waiting for? The Super Bowl? Valentine’s day? Easter? Next year’s HOF election?
Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community. This latest dismantling now cost Miami the 2015 All-Star game. You really didn’t think that MLB would award you the game after this offseason, did you?
How soon before you get rid of Giancarlo Stanton for another group of so-called prospects, as you continue to allow your management to “sell low and buy high”. Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.
All kidding aside, your window of opportunity to get out of town is opening up in just a few weeks. The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013. After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team. You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone. Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.
We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.
