The Miami Heat will try to figure out a way to rebound the basketball when they take the court tonight in Portland against the Trailblazers.  Rebounding, or lack thereof, was the biggest culprit in their loss against the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, when Indiana out-rebounded Miami 55-36.  Game time tonight is 10:30pm, Miami time, and you can watch the game on TNT.  The rest of the trip has the Heat playing the Sacramento Kings (Sat, Jan 12), the Utah Jazz (Mon, Jan 14), the Golden State Warriors (Wed, Jan 16), before closing out their trip the next night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.
In the NBA yesterday,

Utah 112 Charlotte 102
Al Jefferson had 26 points and 8 rebounds

Cleveland 99 Atlanta 83
Kyrie Irving went off for a game-high 33 points.  Atlanta has lost four games in a row.

Toronto 90 Philadelphia 72
Amir Johnson led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds

Boston 87 Phoenix 79
The Celtics’ bench was the key.  Jeff Green scored 14 points, Jared Sullinger had 12 points and 16 rebounds

Milwaukee 104 Chicago 96
Brandon Jennings scored 35 points to go with 6 rebounds and six assists

New Orleans 88 Houston 79

Sources are reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly for their head coaching job just a couple of days after his team lost to Alabama in the national championship game.  We’ll continue to show the list of casualties in the NFL until replacements are final:

Arizona Cardinals fired Ken Whisenhunt
Buffalo Bills fired Chan Gailey, HIRED
                                        SYRACUSE HEAD COACH
                                        DOUG MARRONE
Chicago Bears fired Lovie Smith
Cleveland Browns fired Pat Schurmur
Kansas City Chiefs fired Romeo Crennel,
                                        HIRED ANDY REID
Philadelphia Eagles fired Andy Reid
San Diego Chargers fired Norv Turner

Another couple of names may be joining that list, as the Jacksonville Jaguars are considering relieving Mike Mularkey of his duties.  Over in Dallas, owner Jerry Jones fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, and many are wondering if head coach Jason Garrett could be next.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  As we get ready to welcome back NHL hockey after the lengthy lockout . . . Who won the Stanley Cup Finals last season? Tell you later, alligator.

The voters over at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown did not select any inductees this year for the first time since 1996.  Craig Biggio was the highest vote-getter, receiving almost 68% oc the votes, falling just 39 votes short of the votes needed to reach 75%.  He will get in next year, along with a couple of first-time eligibles, as Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Mike Mussina, and Frank Thomas are eligible for the first time.  Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens received a little over half the votes needed for induction.  It will be interesting to see how the forgiving process begins, and if it does.  In my opinion, it is impossible to ignore an entire generation of players who happened to play in the so-called “steroid era”.  Their seasons are in the books, their teams won and lost, and those records are forever part of the rich history of the game, which must include both the good and the bad.  If they want to include mention of PED’s and steroids on the plaques of hall of fame inductees that were GUILTY after baseball instituted rules against them, OK.

Today’s article of the day comes from ESPN’s Michael Wallace, who discusses the Miami Heat’s problems in rebounding the basketball.

Dear Santa Claus  Tooth Fairy  Cupid  Easter Bunny  Jeffrey Loria and minions:

What do you mean, you still haven’t sold the team?  Christmas came and went! The New Year is here!!! What are you waiting for? Valentine’s day? Easter?

Your inept management allowed the Marlins farm system to deteriorate to the point of being horrible, and now have dismantled the major league roster while pissing off the players on the roster and the entire South Florida community.  You allow your management to continue the policy of “sell low and buy high”.  Please sell the team so we can once again enjoy baseball in Miami.

All kidding aside, you will soon have the window of opportunity you need to get out of town.  The five-year anniversary of the Marlins and Miami-Dade County agreement for the baseball stadium is coming up on February 21, 2013.  After that time, the “penalty” for selling the team is only 5%, a mere pittance, based on a $250 million value of the team.  You’ve already saved much more than that on the salary dump this season alone.  Of course, you and your minions have already decided not to field a quality major league roster this coming season, hopefully setting up the sale of the team.

We’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed and light a candle in the meantime.

Here’s the answer to today’s question: As we get ready to welcome back NHL hockey after the lengthy lockout . . . Who won the Stanley Cup Finals last season?  The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 4 games to 2 to win their first NHL title.
