The blog coming to you from the beautiful North Georgia mountains:

The St. Louis Cardinals did what they had to do, winning a game in Boston, and last night it was Michael Wacha again who came through.  The 22-year-old rookie threw a career-high 114 pitches and allowed two runs and three hits in six innings of work.  He was not his sharpest, as he walked four hitters, but did strike out six.  His only blemish was a two-run homer in the sixth inning by David Ortiz, that gave the Sox a 2-1 lead.  The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the seventh, going ahead on a sacrifice fly by Matt Carpenter, followed by two Boston errors that allowed a second run to score after the fly out.

The Cardinals bullpen was lights out again, as Carlos Martinez threw two scoreless innings, and closer Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side on 11 pitches in the ninth inning to seal the deal.

Game 2 Recap and Box Score:

What happened?

Gordon Edes is nervous about the Red Sox:

The two teams enjoy a day off today, as the series moves to St. Louis for games 3, 4, and 5.

To again quote the legendary Babe Ruth:  “Baseball was, is, and always will be, the best game in the world.”

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals finally gave up a run in the postseason, after 18 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.  Who holds the record for consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason?  The answer comes later, alligator.

In other baseball news,

Lloyd McClendon interviewed for the Detroit Tigers manager job

I can’t resist this.  Here is a quote from Marlins president David Samson yesterday:

“I promise you this:  We’re not going to lose 100 games next year.  Not close.  Look what the Red Sox did.  They had the same record we did in 2012.  They turned it around to be in the World Series in 2013. Well it’s time for us to do the same.”  He added that Marlins Park hasn’t booked any concerts or events in October of 2014 because “we should be and will be playing playoff games.”
Unless the incompetent owner and his merry band of minions are going to get serious about adding talent and keeping talent, I want some of whatever Samson is drinking.
Let’s go to the gridiron:

Week 8 of the NFL season kicked off last night in Tampa, where the Carolina Panthers beat up on the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers by the score of 31-13.

Carolina 31 Tampa Bay 13

Cam Newton threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score as the Panthers won for the fourth time in their last five games after an 0-2 start.

In my NFL picks, the Panthers did good by me last night.  My record so far this season:  25-23-2 against the spread, and 31-19 straight up.

Here’s the rest of this week’s NFL schedule, along with my picks:

Miami @ New England -5 1:00 pm CBS

In order to beat the Patriots, the Dolphins are going to have to be a LOT better in pass protection and give Ryan Tannehill time to throw.  It is a combination of the O-line problems and the fact that Tannehill does not get rid of the ball in a timely fashion.  Tannehill has been sacked 26 times and has committed 11 turnovers this season.  That is not going to cut it.  Miami has lost six in a row to the Patriots, including four consecutive contests up in Foxboro.  I’m taking New England minus the points.

Cleveland @ Kansas City -6                         1:00 pm CBS

The Browns are starting Jason Campbell at QB and he is debuting against the NFL’s top defense.  Not a good combination at all.  Take the Chiefs and give the six points.

Buffalo @ New Orleans -11 1:00 pm CBS

Dallas @ Detroit -3 1:00 pm FOX

NY Giants @ Philadelphia -6 1:00 pm FOX

San Francisco @ Jacksonville +14 (London) 1:00 pm FOX

NY Jets @ Cincinnati -4 1/2 4:05 pm CBS

Taking Cincinnati at home and giving the points.  The Bengals are very tough against the run, and I see that as being a factor this week against the Jets.

Pittsburgh @ Oakland +2 4:05 pm CBS

Gotta go with the Steelers, who have won two games in a row and have only allowed one touchdown in those last two contests.  Oakland QB Terrell Pryor was sacked ten times and threw 3 interceptions against the Kansas City Chiefs last week.  Look for a lot of pressure from the Steelers defense.  I’m taking the Steelers and giving the two points.

Washington @ Denver -12 4:25 pm FOX

Atlanta @ Arizona -3 4:25 pm FOX

Green Bay @ Minnesota +9 1/2 8:30 pm NBC

The Vikings are back to Christian Ponder at QB, and sources are reporting that Adrian Peterson is hobbled by a hamstring injury.  Peterson was held to 28 yards on 13 carries last week and faces a Packers defense that is first in the NFC against the run.  Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers, especially against a pretty bad Vikings secondary.  I’m going with the Packers and give the points.

MONDAY

Seattle @ St. Louis +11 8:30 pm ESPN

This  game could get very ugly, very quickly.  The Rams lost QB Sam Bradford and even considered bringing in Tim Tebow and Brett Favre.  Bottom line, the Rams are definitely in trouble as Kellen Clemens get the start.  The crowd will probably not be a factor, as they play at the same time as game four of the World Series.  Take Seattle and give the points.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals finally gave up a run in the postseason, after 18 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.  Who holds the record for consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason?

Who else but Mariano Rivera with 33 1/3, set from 1997 to 2000.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.  HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!
