The blog is again coming to you from the beautiful North Georgia mountains:

Only two out of the last 16 teams that lost the first game of the World Series have come back to win the Series.  The Cardinals did everything in their power yesterday to lose the game, committing three errors (could have been five) and fell behind immediately 3-0 in the first and 5-0 in the second inning and fell to the Red Sox 8-1.  It was probably the ugliest game the Cardinals have played all season, and the Red Sox were ready to pounce at the opportunity.  Jon Lester threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, giving up only five hits, and struck out eight hitters in the process.  To add injury to insult, Cards right fielder Carlos Beltran had to leave the game in the third inning with a rib injury.  Game two is tonight, first pitch again at 8:07 pm.  John Lackey will start for the Red Sox, Michael Wacha will be on the hill for the Cardinals.  You can watch all the games on FOX.

Congratulations to the umpiring crew, by the way, for getting together on the field and reversing an obvious bad call by the second base umpire on a dropped throw by Cardinals’ shortstop Pete Kozma, a play that would have a been an inning-ending double play.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Red Sox have now won nine world series games in a row.  When was the last time they lost a series game?  The answer comes later, alligator.

Let’s go to the gridiron:

Week 8 of the NFL season kicks off tonight in Tampa, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Carolina Panthers.  Lets take a closer look:

Carolina @ Tampa Bay +6 8:00 pm NFL Network

The Panthers are looking for their third straight win and are trying to get over .500 for the first time in five years, while the Bucs come into this game at 0-6.  Tampa Bay has a new QB in Mike Glennon, who is starting his fourth straight game after the Bucs benched Josh Freeman and eventually waived him.  It also looks like starting RB Doug Martin will miss tonight’s game with a shoulder injury.  Rookie Mike James from the University of Miami will start in his place.  Two teams seemingly going in opposite directions.  I’m going to have to take Carolina and give the six points.

A HORRIBLE Sunday in my NFL picks.  That’ll teach me to not stay home and watch the Red Zone and coach from my recliner.  It was so bad, that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended me for a day this week after my 1-6 record last week.  My record so far this season:  24-23-2 against the spread, and 30-19 straight up.  I’ll have the rest of this week’s picks in tomorrow’s blog.

Here’s the rest of this week’s NFL schedule:

In Dolphin news,

More from Armando Salguero:

Here is something more for you to ponder:  I’ve been hearing more and more that Dan Marino may want to return to the Dolphins in a front office capacity, and now Marino himself talked about it on this week’s Inside the NFL program on Showtime.  With all the success that John Elway has had in Denver, you can see why Marino would consider this.  Remember, back in 2004, Marino was named VP of football operations by then-owner Wayne Huizenga, but resigned three weeks later.  We need to keep our eyes and ears open on this one.

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with more news from all around the league:

Of course, we can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In college football, The University of Miami Hurricanes are 6-0 for the first time since 2004.  The #7-ranked Canes return to the field on Saturday, here at home at the Seven Names Stadium, against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.  Kickoff will be at 12 noon, and you can watch it on ESPN-U.  Vinny Testaverde will be honorary captain for the Canes on Saturday.

The big news out of Coral Gables is that the NCAA witch hunt is officially over, and the Canes football team lost nine scholarships over the next three seasons as punishment for their indiscretions in the scandal with convicted weasel and all-around ass-wipe Nevin Shapiro.  There is more from UM after the dust begins to settle:

Manny Navarro and Susan Miller Degnan have all the latest from Coral Gables:

The FIU Panthers return to the field on Saturday, here at home, against the Bulldogs from Louisiana Tech.  Game time at FIU Stadium is 6:00 pm.  Indianapolis Colts wide receiver TY Hilton will serve as honorary captain for FIU this week.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Red Sox have now won nine world series games in a row.  When was the last time they lost a series game?

We have to go back all the way to game 7 in the 1986 World Series against the Mets.
Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
