The Cardinals are one win away from returning to the World Series.  Matt Holliday homered to lead St. Louis to a 4-2 win and a three games to one lead in their best of seven series with the Dodgers.  It looks good for the Cardinals as they try to close it out today in game 5.  The Dodgers will have Zack Greinke on the hill today against Cardinals rookie Joe Kelly.  Don’t be too quick to write the Dodgers off just yet.  The Cardinals have had 3-1 leads in the NL Championship series twice before, in 1996 against the Braves, and last year, against the Giants.  They ended up losing both series, so you know they are going to do everything they can to not let history repeat itself.  By the way, the Dodgers have never won a postseason series when trailing 3-1.  Game time today is at 4:00 pm, and you can watch it on TBS on your cable or satellite system.

The two best hitting teams in major league baseball are playing more like the Marlins.  John Lackey and Justin Verlander were brilliant yesterday, and Lackey was just a bit better, as the Red Sox escaped with a 1-0 win over the Tigers to take a 2-1 lead in their series.  Mike Napoli provided the only run of the game with a home run in the seventh inning.  The Boston bullpen was, once again, brilliant as well, shutting down the Tigers over the last 2 1/3 innings.  Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa, and Koji Uehara managed to hold the lead.  The Tigers had runners on first and third with one out in the eighth inning, but Tazawa struck out Miguel Cabrera and Uehara came in to strike out Prince Fielder.  Fielder hasn’t driven in a run in his last 15 postseason games.  He has become baseball’s new “Mr. May”.  How bad is Miguel Cabrera hurting?  He swung and missed NINE times in yesterday’s game.  That is the most in any game of his entire career.  The two teams return to the field tonight for game four.  Detroit will have Doug Fister on the hill, the Red Sox will counter with Jake Peavy.  First pitch will be at 8:07 pm, and the game will be televised by FOX.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Yesterday’s 1-0 win by the Red Sox over the Tigers was the 11th time in history that a postseason game that ended 1-0 was decided by a solo home run.  When was the last time this happened?  The answers comes later, alligator.

To again quote the legendary Babe Ruth:

“Baseball was, is, and always will be, the best game in the world.”

More on the story that just refuses to go away:

In case you missed this, on another story that, unfortunately, won’t go away, the Marlins are still owned by Jeffrey Loria.  While I’m still wishing and hoping that this inept and incompetent owner will eventually do the right thing and sell the team to someone who truly cares, it got me thinking . . . with Larry Beinfest now gone, does this open the door for a potential Giancarlo Stanton trade?  There are a number of teams that would jump over a tall building in a single bound to get Stanton.  The Phillies and Mets in the NL East, the Yankees, Orioles, and the Red Sox in the AL East, just to name a few.  Stanton remains under team control for another three seasons, and that makes him very attractive in a trade.

Let’s go to the gridiron:

NOTE:  A few of my readers and friends have asked me how I decide what games to pick every week.  Pretty simple:  I settled on seven games per week, again in honor of my childhood hero, Mickey Mantle.  I take the nationally televised games, (Thursday, Sunday night, Monday night, and the Dolphins).  I try and choose the rest of the games according to the interest for the Dolphins, one from the other network that is not carrying the Dolphins, and one at the late/early kickoff time (after or before the Fins game).

Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS, when Jorge Posada’s homer gave the Yankees a 1-0 win over the Oakland A’s.
