After two games, the Marlins are still looking to score their first run of the season, after they were shutout again by Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals, 3-0.  Gio not only threw six scoreless innings before handing it off to his bullpen, but also homered against Marlins starter Kevin Slowey.  That was the only blemish on Slowey’s night in 5 1/3 innings of work.  The Fish and the Nats close out their series today, first pitch at 4:05 pm.  Jordan Zimmerman will be on the mound for Washington, Wade LeBlanc will toe the rubber for Miami.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Marlins set a franchise record for futility by getting shutout for the second straight game to start a season.  In 1996, they started off by being shutout over the first 13 innings of the season.  Who was the last team to get shutout the first two games of a season?  Tell you later, alligator.

In the rest of MLB yesterday, first in the National League,

Pirates 3 Cubs 0
Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez each drove in a run.  Wandy Rodriguez got the win in his debut with the Pirates.

Braves 9 Phillies 2
Justin Upton and Jason Heyward each connected long distance with a runner on base, Evan Gattis added a solo homer.  Freddie Freeman had a three-run double, and has driven in 6 runs in the first two games of the season.

Giants 5 Dodgers 3

D-Backs 10 Cardinals 9  (16 innings)
Cliff Pennington’s RBI single in the 16th inning ended the ball game.  Paul Goldschmidt, Martin Prado, and Gerardo Parra each had three hits and a home run.

In the American League,

White Sox 5 Royals 2

Rays 8 Orioles 7

In local college basketball news, I hate to say I told you so, but . . . FIU head coach Richard Pitino, who led the Panthers to within a basket of reaching the NCAA tournament, after finishing the regular season with a surprising 18-14 record, resigned after just one season to take the job at the University of Minnesota.  Apparently, not a lot of love and respect from Pitino for FIU’s program or for FIU’s athletic director, Pete Garcia.  Pitino, who had signed a six-year contract, owes FIU $250,000 for skipping out on his contract.  Mike Price is available, and would probably come cheap, after getting fired at Rutgers for abusing his players, both physically and verbally.  The AP had this regarding Price:

In Miami Dolphin news, are the Dolphins going to sign or trade for offensive tackle help?  Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post has some answers:

In college baseball, FIU defeated Florida A&M last night 8-4, sweeping their two-game series.  FIU heads to Mobile, Alabama to take on South Alabama in a three-game series beginning on Friday.  Meanwhile, the University of Miami lost to Bethune Cookman yesterday, 5-3.  Florida State will be in town this weekend to battle the Canes in a three-game weekend series.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria continues to defend his inexcusable purge of the team.  Here’s the story from the Palm Beach Post:

Personal note to Loria:  I don’t question the trading of all those players before the season . . . Hell, those players led the team to 93 losses last year.  What is totally, totally wrong is that you did not bring in any major league talent to replace these players.  You and your minions are squeezing the life out of Giancarlo Stanton, and might even end up trading him.  We already anticipate that Ricky Nolasco will most probably end up being traded at some point this season.  You repeatedly promised this community that the new stadium would allow you to spend more money on payroll.  That promise went out the window.  You lied to the Marlins fans, who, like all loyal baseball fans, expect and deserve a major league product on the field year in and year out.  Prospects for the future are all nice and good, but you cannot go from one extreme to the other because you and your baseball “minds” failed so miserably last year.  You need to face the harsh reality: If your economic situation prevents you from spending enough to be in a position to compete year in and year out, just do yourself and the community a favor - SELL THE TEAM.

The San Diego Padres were shutout by Randy Johnson and Curt Shilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks to begin the 2002 season. It has now happened 13 times in major league history.
