The Marlins lost to the Mets yesterday, 4-3, but the big story was the major league debut of 20-year-old Jose Fernandez on the mound.  The young Cuban was brilliant, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings, walked just one, and struck out eight.  He was in line for the win, but the bullpen, specifically Steve Chisek, let Fernandez down.  Chisek gave up gave up the game-winning two-run single to Marlon Byrd against a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the ninth, handing the Mets the win.  SIDE NOTE TO MARLINS ROOKIE MANAGER MIKE REDMOND:  With the tying run on third, and the winning run on second, you should have walked the next hitter intentionally so you don’t necessarily have to bring the infield in all the way.  Rookie mistake.

The Fish open a three-game series tonight at Marlins Park against the Atlanta Braves.  The pitching match-ups for this series:

THE MARLINS EXPECT A DROP IN ATTENDANCE THIS SEASON! Really? You think? Here’s the full article:

In other baseball news, the Atlanta Braves placed Freddie Freeman on the 15-day DL with an oblique injury.  Freeman is not real happy, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

O’Brien has a preview of the Braves vs Marlins series:

After getting rocked by the Red Sox on Opening Day, CC Sabathia looked good yesterday against the Tigers, shutting them out over his seven innings of work.  The New York Post’s Kevin Kernan says we could be seeing a new and improved version of CC:

In local college basketball news, no news yet from Westchester regarding the search for a new basketball head coach at FIU.   Athletic Director Pete Garcia said last week that he expects to have a replacement in no later than a week to ten days, so we may have something as early as sometime later in the week.

In Miami Dolphin news, the Dolphins and Miami-Dade County are closing in on an agreement for upgrades to the Seven-Names Stadium.  The Miami Herald is all over this story:

I’m beginning to sense that there is a very real possibility that the Dolphins may be leaning to possibly trading the #12 pick in the first round and dropping down in the first round, and adding another pick in the first two or three rounds.  At some point, they will probably look at perhaps drafting a running back to replace Reggie Bush.  Here a name for you, and remember, you heard it here first:  Ed Lacy.  Check him out here:

In college baseball, FIU lost two out of three against South Alabama in Mobile this weekend.  Meanwhile, over in Coral Gables, the University of Miami also fell twice in their three-game series against arch-rival Florida State this weekend.  FIU hosts Louisiana-Monroe this weekend at FIU Stadium, while the Canes will host Stetson on Wednesday, and travel to College Park, MD this weekend to take on Maryland.
