The Marlins take on the Phillies tonight at Marlins Park in the first game of a three-game series this weekend.  Ricky Nolasco will start tonight for the Marlins, John Lannan will open for the Phils. The Marlins have scored a grand total of 16 runs in their first nine games of the season, and have a 1-8 record to show for it.  I GUARANTEE YOU, here and now, that things will get better.  Nobody loses at an eight out of nine pace and scores less than two runs per game over an entire season.  All three games against the Phillies will be televised by Fox Sports Florida.

Here are the pitching match-ups this weekend against the Phillies:

FRIDAY 7:10 pm John Lannan vs Ricky Nolasco
SATURDAY 7:10 pm  Cole Hamels vs Jose Fernandez
SUNDAY 1:10 pm Roy Halladay vs Kevin Slowey

On Monday, the Washington Nationals will be here to open a three game series against the Fish.  First pitch for all three games against Washington will be at 7:10 pm.

The Marlins have scored a grand total of 16 runs in their first nine games.  For those of you who are not math majors, that is under 2 runs per game.  I will be posting the “bottom five” rankings in runs scored until the Marlins aren’t on the list:

TEAM W-L Runs
Miami 1-8 16
Pittsburgh 3-6 21
LA Dodgers 5-3 27
Padres 2-6 28
Cubs 3-6 29

Joe Frisaro, who covers the Fish for MLB.com, has some good information on the Marlins of the future:

In the rest of MLB yesterday, first in the National League,

Giants 7 Cubs 6
Pablo Sandoval and Angel Pagan each drove in a pair of runs as the Giants rallied from a 5-0 deficit.

Nationals 7 White Sox 4
Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman drove in a couple of runs each as the Nats completed a three-game sweep of the Sox.

Dodgers 3 Padres 2
Juan Uribe’s pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning gave the Dodgers the victory.  Adrian Gonzalez also connected long distance with a man on.  Bad news for the Dodgers - starting pitcher Zack Greinke suffered a fractured left collarbone during a bench-clearing brawl after the Padres’ Carlos Quentin was hit with a pitch.  No love lost between those two guys.

In the American League,

Tigers 11 Toronto 1
Prince Fielder drove in four runs, Torii Hunter finished with three RBI.  Former Marlin Josh Johnson gave up six runs and seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings.

Orioles 3 Red Sox 2
Adam Jones drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Chris Davis homered again. Manny Machado went 3-4 with two runs scored for the O’s.

Athletics 8         Angels 1
Break up the A’s.  They have won eight in a row after losing the first two games of the season.  Josh Donaldson and Yoenis Cespedes both connected long distance in the win.

Rangers 4 Mariners 3
AJ Pierzynski homered for Texas.

For a second consecutive night, the game between the Yankees and the Indians had to be postponed due to inclement weather.

In other news around baseball, I told you here yesterday that 21-year-old Cuban prospect Jorge Soler, playing in the Chicago Cubs’ Class A team in Daytona, was ejected from a game against Clearwater for approaching their dugout wielding a bat.  He has now been suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for the incident.  Here’s the full story from ESPN.com:

Can you believe the Designated Hitter has now been around for 40 years?

Here’s an interesting look by Dave Cameron of ESPN.com regarding the DH this season.  I don’t totally agree with him on his take on the Braves, however, because when Brian McCann is able to return from the disabled list, he will be the perfect DH until he is 100% healthy.:

Jayson Stark of ESPN feels the time has come to add the DH to the National League:

Here’s my opinion:  I believe that if you’re going to have the DH at every level of the game from little league to high school, from college to the minors, you have to have it in both major leagues.  Whatever they do, it has to be uniform for all levels of the game.  You can’t put an american league pitcher in a position to have to grab a bat and hit for the first time since he was a boy, much less against major league pitching.

Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Designated Hitter has now been with us for 40 years.  Who was the first designated hitter in a major league game?  Tell you later, alligator.

Still nothing new to report from Westchester regarding the search for a new basketball head coach at FIU.  David J. Neal, who does a terrific job covering FIU for the Miami Herald is following some names, which he talks here:

Let’s get into a little bit of football.  Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland talked draft yesterday:

Todd McShay of ESPN has his latest mock draft:

The greatest tournament in golf, the Masters, started yesterday.

In college baseball, FIU hosts Louisiana-Monroe this weekend at FIU Stadium.  Over in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes defeated Stetson yesterday 8-2, and they now head to College Park, MD to take on Maryland in a three-game series this weekend.
