The Marlins and the Washington Nationals continue their opening series in the nation’s capital this evening. After being dominated and shut down by Stephen Strasburg on Monday, the Fish will look to rebound with veteran Kevin Slowey on the mound against Gio Gonzalez. Slowey needs to avoid Bryce Harper, who homered twice in the opener against Ricky Nolasco to account for both runs in the 2-0 Nats win. The 28-year old is looking for his first win in the majors since September 28, 2010. He was only able to pitch in a total of 10 games, six of them starts, in 2011 with the Twins and 2012 with the Indians. Gonzalez, a Miami product, won 21 games for the Nats last season. Game time tonight is 7:05 pm.
In the rest of MLB yesterday, first in the American League,
Rockies 8 Brewers 4
Troy Tulowizki and Carlos Gonzalez both homered for the second straight game. Ryan Braun cracked a two-run homer for the Brewers in the loss.
Cardinals 6 D-Backs 1

In the American League,
Orioles 7 Rays 4
Adam Jones keyed a five-run, seventh-inning rally with a go-ahead three-run homer. Matt Wieters also homered for the Orioles.
Indians 4 Blue Jays 1

Rangers 7 Astros 0
Yu Darvish was perfect through 8 2/3 innings, retiring the first 26 batters, before someone named Marwin Gonzalez hit a ground ball between Darvish’s legs into center field. Ian Kinsler homered with a man on and Lance Berkman drove in two runs for the Rangers.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: 1) There were three perfect games last year in the majors. Who threw the gems? 2) Who was the last pitcher to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning? Tell you later, alligator.
Dave George of the Palm Beach Post talks about Marlin prospect Jose Fernandez and remembers Dwight Gooden:
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com gives us his list of 12 managers that he feels are on the hot seat this season:
Some things I want to see during the 2013 baseball season. This list is not all-inclusive:
- I want to see the Old Yankees perform like the old Yankees. Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter, and even Alex Rodriguez.
- I want to see Mike Redmond do a good enough job to keep his job with the Marlins for more than just a little while.
- Speaking of the Marlins, I want Jeffrey Loria to do the right thing and sell the team. Please let us enjoy baseball again.
- I want to see Troy Tulowitzki return to the form that made him one of the best players in the game.
- I want to see the Marlins sign Giancarlo Stanton to a long-term deal and then go out and fill out that roster with some proven major league talent to go along with the prospects.
- I want to see a complete season without hearing anything about PED’s, steroids, or human growth hormones.
- Long term, I want to see MLB do something about the financial unbalance which exists in the game. We understand the reality that it isn’t just about taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor. If a low revenue team gets revenue-sharing dollars, force them to spend it on on-field talent. Give the low-revenue teams that do things right even greater incentive by allowing them to select more players early in the amateur draft. Force owners to have a MINIMUM payroll. Make international players eligible for the draft.
- I also want to see MLB force Jeffrey Loria to sell the Marlins.
- Since the Yankees aren’t winning anything this year, I want to see the Oakland A’s and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in the AL Championship series.
- I want to see Fredi Gonzalez and the Atlanta Braves win the World Series.
The Miami Heat were again without LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Mario Chalmers in the lineup last night as they took on the New York Knicks at the AAA. The Knicks and Carmelo Anthony took advantage of their absence, beating the Heat 102-90. Anthony scored 50 points as the Knicks won their ninth consecutive game. All 26 of Carmelo’s shots were at least 15 feet from the basket. He was definitely “en fuego”. THe Knicks are now tied with the Indiana Pacers for the number 2 seed in the East, with nine games to play. Miami has already clinched the best record in the East, and their magic number to clinch home-court advantage throughout the playoffs is five. The Heat will rest until Friday, when they will be in Charlotte to take on the Bobcats. They return home to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.
In the rest of the NBA yesterday,
Washington 90 Chicago 86
Emeka Okafor’s dunk with 45 seconds left broke a tie at 86-86. John Wall led the Wizards with 27 points, 8 rebounds, and nine assists.
LA Lakers 101 Dallas 81
Nice game for Kobe Bryant, who finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. Dwight Howard added 24 points and 12 rebounds, Earl Clark had 17 points and 10 boards, Pau Gason finished with a double-double as well, 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers and the Utah Jazz are tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

In Miami Dolphin news, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has taken a special interest in a couple of players that the Dolphins are in the process of interviewing this week:
In other NFL news, the Oakland Raiders found someone to take QB Carson Palmer off their hands. ESPN.com has all the details:
In college baseball, FIU defeated Florida A&M last night 7-4. These two teams will meet again today, before FIU heads to Mobile, Alabama to take on South Alabama in a three-game series beginning on Friday. Meanwhile, the University of Miami will be home all week, taking on Bethune Cookman tonight, and hosting Florida State for three games this weekend.
I’m gonna keep this in here for a few days, for those of you that missed it. My good friend O. D. Villavicencio shared this with us. A couple of years ago, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wrote what he called “The Matheny Manifesto”, intended for youth baseball coaches and, especially, parents. It is one of the most thought provoking and incredibly accurate collection of thoughts that I have ever come across on the subject of youth sports. You really have to read this and share it with anyone you think would benefit from it:
High School Sports coverage, especially during baseball season, seems to have disappeared from the Miami Herald. Here is the web site for all the latest in High School Baseball -
My thanks go out to LaSalle head coach Oscar Benitez for sharing the web site with me.
Don’t miss my two “Descarga Deportiva” segments (for the Spanish-challenged, “Sports Jam Session”) every day, Monday through Friday, at 9:25 am and 12:15 pm on Radio Esperanza, 1550 AM or on the internet on www.miradioesperanza.com.
THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Two part question: 1) There were three perfect games last year in the majors. Who threw the gems? 2) Who was the last pitcher to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning?
- Last season’s perfect games were dished out by Phillip Humber, Matt Cain, and Felix Hernandez.
- Armando Galarraga, back on June 2, 2010. Of course, Galarraga was denied the no-hitter when umpire Jim Joyce missed an obvious out call at first base.
