The good news is that the Marlins finally scored a run, albeit in their third game of the season.  Justin Ruggiano’s solo homer was all the offense the Fish could muster against the Nationals, who swept the series, outscoring the Marlins 11-1 in the three-game sweep.  The big blast for the Nats in yesterday’s 6-1 win was a three-run homer by Jayson Werth.  Ryan Zimmerman went 3-3 with two RBI.  Not a good beginning to the season for the Mets, who now head to the Big Apple to take on the Mets in a weekend series. The starting pitchers this weekend will be Alex Sanabia vs Jeremy Hefner on Friday, Ricky Nolasco vs Jon Niese on Saturday, and on Sunday, we will see the major league debut of 20-year old Jose Fernandez vs Aaron Laffey.  Game times this weekend against the Metropolitans: Friday 7:10 pm, Saturday 1:10 pm, Sunday 1:10 pm.

In local college basketball news, after FIU head coach Richard Pitino bolted after just one season here, Athletic Director Pete Garcia said yesterday that he expects to have a replacement in no later than a week to ten days.  He added that there was a lot of interest for the job last year, and that the number now “has tripled”.  I believe that the next FIU coach will be an up-and-coming assistant, possibly with South Florida ties, that will want to make more of a long-term commitment, not just use FIU as a stepping stone.

No such problem at UM, where Jim Larrañaga, who led the Canes to the ACC regular-season and tournament titles and a No. 2 ranking during the year, received the AP's National Coach of the year award.  The 63-year-old had a 29-7 record in his second season with the Hurricanes, which earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.  Larrañaga is the first UM coach to win the award and the first ACC coach to get it since Roy Williams won it in 2006.

In Miami Dolphin news, the Dolphins will face the Dallas Cowboys in the first pre-season game of the year on August 4.  The rest of the preseason schedule has Miami traveling to Jacksonville and Houston, and they will be at home to take on Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger talked to NFL.com and he had some good things to say about new Dolphin WR Mike Wallace

Mel Kiper Jr. has a new Mock Draft, a two-rounder:

In college baseball, FIU is in Mobile, Alabama to take on South Alabama in a three-game series beginning tonight.  Meanwhile, over in Coral Gables, the University of Miami hosts Florida State this weekend in a three-game series.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  40-year-old Andy Pettitte was the Yankee stopper yesterday, dominating the Red Sox after they beat up the Yanks the first two games.  Pettitte is the active leader in career wins in the Majors.  How many wins does he have in his career?   Tell you later, alligator.

Pettitte leads all active pitchers with 246 wins.  Roy Halladay (199), Tim Hudson (197), and CC Sabathia (191) are next and should all reach the 200 mark this season.
