TGIF - - FRIDAY BLOG - - August 2nd, 2013

A lot to cover on the suspensions today:

FOX Sports is reporting that MLB will hand down the suspensions today:

Yahoo! Sports has a different time frame and different number of players:

ESPN says that MLB and A-Roid are far apart in their negotiations because of . . . . $$$.  Of course, I’m SHOCKED!  Here’s the story:

The New York Post says that A-Roid is ready to continue his rehab in Trenton tonight and tomorrow and is not ready to surrender to MLB:

This twist may make a difference and force A-Roid and his minions to accept a settlement:

Federal government prosecutors are now looking  to bring criminal charges against Anthony Bosch and his little clinic as they investigate, not only the charges of providing PED’s to professional athletes, but also to high school athletes and even politicians and public figures in South Florida. Two stories on this:

The New York Daily News, first:

ESPN says Jeff Novitzki, who headed the federal criminal investigations against Balco, Roger Clemens, and Lance Armstroing is now after Biogenesis:

Buster Olney of ESPN tells us what he thinks Bud Seelig should do with A-Roid:

Let’s go to the games.  The Marlins beat the Mets 3-0 yesterday.  Donovan Solano drove in two runs and Logan Morrison had an RBI single to account for the offense against All Star starter Matt Harvey, who for only the third time this season, failed to go at least six innings.  All three times have come against the Marlins.  Harvey is now 0-1 against the Fish, with a 3.52 ERA this season.  Against the rest of the world, he is 8-2, with a 1.97 ERA.  Tom Koehler threw six scoreless innings, AJ Ramos followed with two scoreless frames, and Steve Chisek closed the ninth for his 23rd save.  The Cleveland Indians are in town this weekend for a three-game interleague series.  The expected pitching matchups this weekend:

FRIDAY       Ubaldo Jimenez vs Jose Fernandez 7:10 pm
SATURDAY     Zach McAllister vs Jacob Turner 7:10 pm
SUNDAY       Scott Kazmir vs Nathan Eovaldi 1:10 pm

After this weekend, and a day off on Monday,  the Marlins will hit the road.  Three games at Pittsburgh against the Pirates, three games in Atlanta against the Braves, and three games in Kansas City against the Royals.

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 341 runs in their 107 games.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 42-65 341
White Sox 40-66 391
Nationals 52-56 401
Astros 36-71 408
Phillies 50-58 408

The Yankees need to be careful, as they are DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to making the bottom-dwellers list, as they are now the sixth lowest-scoring team in the majors, with 412 runs in their 107 games (56-51).

In contrast, the Boston Red Sox lead the majors with 553 runs in 110 games.  The Detroit Tigers have scored 549 runs in 106 games.

The University of Miami Hurricanes are two days away from starting preseason practices.  Coach Al Golden says his team is ready and focused:

Why hasn’t the NCAA come out with the results of their investigation against the University of Miami?  What the hell are they waiting for?

In Dolphin news, the Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys will play in the first preseason game this year this Sunday, August 4th, in Canton, Ohio, the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  The game will be broadcast nationally by NBC, Channel 6 in South Florida.  I can’t believe the football season is already here.  SIDE NOTE:  Thanks to Gerardo Gomez for catching the fact that I decided to move the game to Dallas in yesterday’s blog.

Here is Armando Salguero’s daily Dolphin report from the Miami Herald:

Here’s ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog, with news from all around the league:

We can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In NBA news, I know you've heard this before . . . Free agent center Greg Oden expects to make a decision on where he is signing today.  The Heat are still in the running.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Over the last 10 years, 73% of the teams in first place in their respective divisions (44 out of 60) on August 1st have advanced to the playoffs.  When was the last time that ALL six teams in first place on August 1st played in the post season?

The year was 2006, when the Yankees, Twins, and A’s all advanced and in the NL, the Mets, the Cardinals, and the Padres also made the playoffs.  The Cardinals beat the Tigers (the wild card team) in the World Series that year, by the way.
