NOTE TO ALL:  Don’t miss tomorrow’s blog as I participate in the phenomenom known as Throwback Thursday.  Tomorrow, I will bring you my top 100 Chris Berman baseball nicknames.

The Marlins lost to the Nationals last night by the score of 2-1.  Enough said.  They pitched well, but cannot hit a watermelon with a guitar.

I know that the Marlins are the worst offensive team in the majors,  but I wanted to see it in detail.

This is the sorry reality:  The Marlins have been held to three runs or less 84 times this season, and their record in those 84 games is 17-67. Here is the breakdown:

When scoring three runs in a game   - 6-15
When scoring two runs in a game - 9-17
When scoring one run in a game - 2-20

Of course, they lead the majors in getting shutout, 15 times.  For the non-math majors, the Fish are (OF COURSE) 0-15 when they get shutout.

On a positive note, the Fish are 32-14 when they score four runs or more in a game. You would think that the team’s crack management and incompetent owner would figure this out and add some offense for next season.

The pitchers for the rest of the series against the Nationals:

TONIGHT Henderson Alvarez vs Stephen Strasburg 7:05 pm
THURSDAY Tom Koehler vs Gio Gonzalez 7:05 pm

The Fish will then head to Atlanta to take on the Braves over the weekend.  Jose Fernandez will be on the mound on Friday against Julio Teheran.  Fernandez has pitched 152 2/3 innings so far this season, and the Fish are adamant that he will be limited to 170 innings or so this season.  That means that he will probably pitch a maximum of three more times this season.

Fernandez is making a case to win the NL Rookie of the year award, although shutting him down could cost him the award.  The 21-year-old phenom is 10-5 with the third-best ERA in the majors (2.30).  He has even been better recently, having given up two runs or less in eight straight starts.  What to do, what to do?

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 415 runs in their 130 games, an underwhelming 3.19 runs per game.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers, and we now have a three-way tie for fifth place in the Hall of Shame:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 49-81 416
White Sox 55-76 496
Phillies 60-72 498
Giants 59-73 500
Nationals 66-65 511
Padres 59-73 511
Twins 57-73 511

In contrast, the Boston Red Sox (78-55) lead MLB with 674 runs scored and the Detroit Tigers (77-55) have plated 671.  The Sox have played 1 more game than the Tigers.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Mets 5 Phillies 0
Jonathon Niese pitched his second career shutout and drove in three runs.

Braves 2 Indians 0
Alex Wood combined with four relievers to shutout the Indians.  Elliot Johnson had a two-run triple.  The Braves lead over the Nats remains at 13 games.

Brewers 7 Pirates 6
Caleb Gindl drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.  Aramis Ramirez had four hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs.

Giants 5 Rockies 3
Former Marlin Yusmeiro Petit pitched six solid innings to win for the first time in the Major Leagues since August 2009.  Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval homered for the Giants.

D-Backs 10 Padres 9 (10 innings)
Aaron Hill drove in the game-winner with a single.  The D-Backs have been excellent in extra-inning games this season, with a 15-5 record.

Cubs 3 Dodgers 2
Travis Wood gave up only an unearned run in his seven innings of work as the Cubs beat Clayton Kershaw.  Incredibly enough, former Marlin Kevin Gregg recorded his 27th save of the season.

Over in the American League,

Yankees 7 Blue Jays 1
Alfonso Soriano blasted two home runs, the second homer the 400th of his career.  Andy Pettitte got the win, throwing seven scoreless innings

A’s 6 Tigers 3 (6 innings)
In a game shortened by rain, Brandon Moss and Seth Smith connected long distace as the A’s beat Justin Verlander.

Red Sox 13 Orioles 2
Shane Victorino went 3-3, with two home runs, and drove in seven runs.  Felix Doubront improved to 10-6.

Angels 6 Rays 5
Erick Aybar hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to give the Angels the win.  Aybar finished with 4 RBI.

White Sox 4 Astros 3
Jordan Danks hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally the White Sox.

Royals 6 Twins 1
KC scored 5 runs in the eighth inning, Alex Gordon’s three-run double the key hit.

Rangers 4 Mariners 3 (10 innings)
Ian Kinsler scored the deciding run on a controversial balk call.

Speaking of the Braves, Braves’ reserve outfielder and pinch-hitter extraordinaire Elliot Johnson does a GREAT impersonation of Harry Caray (sorry - MLB.com puts an ad before the video):

Congratulations to the Houston Astros and MLB.  The Astros and the Marlins continue to snub their noses at the rest of the MLB teams and their fans by putting a “minor-league” product on the field and raking in huge profits.  According to Forbes, the worst team in baseball is also the most profitable in the history of the sport:

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  An oldie but a goodie, but a very easy question today.  What pair of brothers have hit the most home runs in major league history?

Too easy.  Hank Aaron and Tommie Aaron combined to hit 768 homers in their combined major league careers.  Hank hit 755, Tommie hit 13.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.
