Another day, another close loss for the Marlins, who fell to the Pirates in Pittsburgh by the score of 4-2.    Charlie Morton gave up two runs in his seven innings of work and Andrew McCutchen connected long distance for the Pirates in the win.  The Marlins have now lost four in a row and six out of nine.  It is up to Jose Fernandez today and he will be up against Gerrit Cole.  Game time today is at 12:35 pm.

After today’s game, the Marlins will head to Atlanta to take on the red-hot Braves in a three-game set over the weekend.

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 359 runs in their 112 games.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

Jay Bruce homered and finished with three RBI and Corky Miller had a pair of RBI doubles

Chris Davis hit the tie-breaking three-run homer in the eighth inning.  JJ Hardy also connected long distance.

Cubs 5 Phillies 2
Donnie Murphy hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, his second home run of the game.

Braves 6 Nationals 3
Jason Heyward broke a 3-3 in the eighth inning with a run-scoring single and Justin Upton followed him with a two-run double.  The Braves extended their winning streak to 13 in a row and are sitting in first place in the NL east by a very comfortable 15 1/2 games over the Nationals.

Mets 5 Rockies 0
Matt Harvey tossed his first complete game and shutout to improve his record to 9-3.

Dodgers 13 Cardinals 4
Andre Ethier and Skip Schumaker both had three hits and four RBI.  Ricky Nolasco got the win, giving up three unearned runs in his six innings of work.

Martin Prado went 4-4, including the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning.

Brewers 6 Giants 1
Norichika Aoki had a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning.

Prince Fielder hit a go-ahead two-run double in the 14th inning.  The Tigers have won 11 games in a row and extended their lead in the AL central to 6 games over the Cleveland Indians and 8 games over the KC Royals.

White Sox 6 Yankees 5  (12 innings)
Alejandro de Aza’s two-run triple in the 12th inning ended the game after Robinson Cano had homered in the top of the 12th to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead.  Mariano Rivera gave up the tying run in the ninth inning on a two-out single by Adam Dunn.

Alex Gordon homered and drove in two runs, Alcides Escobar also drove in a pair of runs.

Mariners 9 Blue Jays 7
Humberto Quintero connected long distance and finished with three RBI.

Stephen Drew hit the decisive three-run homer in the ninth inning

Rangers 10 Angels 3
Adrian Beltre went 3-4 with a homer and finished with three RBI and four runs scored.  The Rangers moved into a virtual first-place tie with the Oakland A’s in the AL west.
