Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer and the Braves beat the Marlins again last night, 7-5. Uggla has 13 RBI in 12 games against the Marlins this season, and has homered three times in 6 games at Marlins Park. Giancarlo Stanton missed last night’s game with a muscle strain, he may be able to return to the lineup tomorrow. The Braves have dominated the Marlins so far this season, taking 10 out of the first 13 encounters. The Fish will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound tonight, and he will face Paul Maholm. Game time is 7:00 pm. On Wednesday, also at 7:00 pm, Josh Johnson faces Kris Medlen. The Marlins will be honoring Chipper Jones in what will be his last appearance at Marlins Park after his hall-of-fame career on Wednesday, so you may want to get there early. The Yankees open up a series today at Yankee Stadium against the Blue Jays. Andy Pettitte returns to the mound in his first start since breaking a bone in his leg. Bad weather is looming in the Big Apple, so don’t be surprised if they have to postpone today’s game and play a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Oakland A’s are in Detroit to take on the Tigers. Boston is in Tampa against the Rays. The Chicago White Sox are visiting the KC Royals, the Texas Rangers are in Anaheim against the LA Angels, and the Orioles take on the Mariners in Seattle.
In the National League, the Dodgers are in Washington against the Nationals, Milwaukee visits the Pirates in Pittsburgh, the Phillies take on the Mets at Citi Field, weather permitting, Houston is in St. Louis against the Cardinals, and the Diamondbacks are hosting San Diego.
I am anticipating some very close races for some of the post-season awards this year in major league baseball. In the NL MVP, Ryan Braun appears to be the leader at the moment, but are the voters going to be willing to forgive and forget last year’s PED fiasco? Giants catcher Buster Posey has put himself in the running, Reds outfielder Jay Bruce is going to receive some votes, and Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is having a whale of a season, although he has struggled a bit the last month or so while his team has been in a downhill spiral. The Cy Young race in the NL is also very interesting. Local product Gio Gonzalez leads the majors in wins with 19, while RA Dickey is just behind him with 18. My choice for the Cy Young would still be Atlanta Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. This guy is the most dominating and clearly the best pitcher in baseball. Some of his numbers are just INSANE:

Manager of the year in the NL is pretty much in the bag for Dave Johnson, unless the Nats collapse. Fredi Gonzalez, Mike Matheny, Dusty Baker, and Bruce Bochy should also get some votes.

In college football this week, the new rankings are out and Alabama is again the clear-cut #1 team in the country. LSU is #2, followed by Oregon, Florida State and Georgia. Rounding out the top-ten, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, Stanford, and Clemson. Florida is # 14. The local universities are both in action again this saturday. The Hurricanes travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in a 3:00 pm game. Georgia Tech is a 14-point favorite. No respect whatsoever for the Canes, even in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the FIU Panthers host the Louisville Cardinals, who come into the Cage ranked #20 in the country. Louisville is favored over FIU by 13 1/2. Game time for FIU-Louisville is 7:00 pm. In yesterday’s monday night extravaganza, the Atlanta Falcons beat the Denver Broncos 27-21, withstanding a furious fourth-quarter rally by Peyton Manning. Manning completed 24-37 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, but couldn’t overcome three first-quarter interceptions. Matt Ryan completed 24-36 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns.
The Miami Dolphins are somewhat relieved after Sunday’s 35-13 win over the Oakland Raiders. The returning veterans still have the bitter memories of last season, when they got off to a horrendous 0-7 start. That, and a winless preseason this year, planted some seeds of doubt in the Dolphin fans, so much so that they stayed away in huge numbers in the first home game of the season. This week should be a little better, as the hated New York Jets come to town. Game time on Sunday against Rex Ryan’s team at Seven Names Stadium is 1:00 pm. I expect that the Dolphins will do what is necessary to make sure that the game is on local television.
By the way, I went 3-2 on my picks vs. the spread last week, losing the Dolphins and the Giants, who didn’t cover. Got the Falcons, the 49ers, and the Steelers. First two weeks of the season, I am 7-3 against the spread. Carlos Oliva of the Judge’s Nephews, who joined me on my Descarga Deportiva pick segment last week, also went 3-2 against the spread. Carlos got the Dolphins, the Buccaneers, and the Falcons, but misfired on the 49ers and Steelers.
