The Marlins have an opportunity this weekend to get out of last place in the NL east, as they take on the Mets in a three-game series at Citi Field. The Fish are sitting 1/2 game behind New York in the cellar, and the Metropolitans are 4-24 since the All Star break at home. The starting pitchers that will match up this weekend: Jacob Turner faces Jon Niese tonight; Mark Buehrle takes on RA Dickey on Saturday, and Ricky Nolasco squares off against Chris Young on Sunday. The Nationals and the Reds have both clinched playoff appearances. The only division race still in doubt is the NL East, where Washington leads Atlanta by 5 1/2 games. Atlanta visits Philadelphia this weekend, while the Nats host the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves are pretty much in control of the wild card race, with a six-game cushion over the Cardinals. The second spot is still up in the air, with St. Louis holding a 2 1/2 game lead on the Dodgers. The Brewers are 3 games behind, the Phillies 4 back, the Pirates and the Diamondbacks find themselves 5 1/2 games behind for that second spot. St. Louis is in Chicago to take on the Cubs, and the Dodgers visit Cincinnati.

The Yankees lead the East by 1 game over the Orioles. The Yankees welcome the Oakland A’s to Yankee Stadium for a weekend series. The O’s take on the Boston Red Sox at Fenway park this weekend. Toronto visits Tampa, Minnesota is at Detroit, and the White Sox travel to Anaheim to play the Angels. Chicago is up by two games over the Tigers. The Orioles and A’s are tied in the wild card race.

Various national sources are reporting that the Marlins will fire President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest and General Manager Mike Hill, possibly as early as next week. I have always asked the question, “When does the honeymoon with Beinfest end?”, but the debacle of 2012 cannot fall solely on his shoulders. Many bad moves, and many moves that were ill-timed can be blamed on ownership. The signings of John Buck and Heath Bell are all on owner Jeffrey Loria, for example. The trading of Hanley Ramirez when his value was the lowest also has to fall on ownership, with Beinfest at least being able to recoup the entire salary left on H2R’s contract. The hiring of Ozzie Guillen, who is also rumored to be on his way out, also comes to mind as a bad idea by ownership. In all fairness, this year’s failure is not something that can be blamed on Ozzie. He has to manage with the cards that he is dealt, and he has obviously not been playing with a full deck this season. Beinfest is responsible for the decline and demise of the Marlins‘ minor league system, and the way that players are handled leaves a lot to be desired. Their mismanagement of medical issues with players has been questioned and maybe it is time for a change. Mr. Beinfest should be very familiar with someone being “thrown under a bus”, which is exactly what he did with Fredi Gonzalez and Edwin Rodriguez. What goes around, comes around. The name mentioned as the replacement is Dan Jennings, a good baseball man, who has been doing his very best the past couple of years to repair the minor league system.
It is also being reported that Mike Lowell is being considered to replace Guillen. That would be a GREAT hire for this organization, but I would want to see Mike get a year of experience either at AAA or AA or as a coach with the Fish.
All that being said, what would I do if this was my team? Although I am not a devotee of Ozzie, I truly believe that he deserves to stay on. I think I want to see him manage with nothing hanging over his head and with a healthy roster. That would give the team the necessary time to groove Lowell for the position. By the way, Mr. Loria and Mr. Samson should keep their noses out of the baseball side of operations. Let the GM do his job, and the GM needs to let the manager do his.
In college football this week, the local universities are both in action again tomorrow. The Hurricanes travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in a 3:00 pm game. Georgia Tech is a 14-point favorite. No respect whatsoever for the Canes, even in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the FIU Panthers host the Louisville Cardinals, who come into the Cage ranked #20 in the country. Louisville is favored over FIU by 13 1/2. Game time for FIU-Louisville is 7:00 pm. Varias fuentes nacionales estan reportando que los Marlins van a despedir al presidente de operaciones de beisbol, Larry Beinfest y al gerente general Mike Hill, posiblemente la semana que viene. Yo llevo bastante tiempo ya preguntandome, “Cuando se acaba la luna de miel con Larry Beinfest?”, pero el debacle que ha sido la temporada del 2012 no es todo culpa de Beinfest. Muchas malas decisiones y movidas que no fueron hechas en el momento correcto son culpa de los dueños. Por ejemplo, firmar a John Buck y a Heath Bell fueron decisiones de Jeffrey Loria unica y exclusivamente. El llegar a la decision de que tenian que cambiar a Hanley Ramirez cuando su valor estaba por el piso tambien es responsabilidad de Loria. Por lo menos, Beinfest logro que los Dodgers pagaran el balance completo del dinero que se le debia a H2R. El traer a Ozzie Guillen, que tambien supuestamente va a ser reemplazado, fue tambien otra idea del Sr. Loria. Hay que ser justo: el fracaso de los Marlins en el 2012 no es culpa de Guillen. Un manager solamente puede jugar con las cartas que le dan, y el no tenia todas las barajas a su disposicion. Beinfest si es responsable por la decadencia que ha sufrido la organizacion de ligas menores de los Marlins los ultimos años, y sus equivocaciones en como trabajar con los jugadores lesionados en el equipo han sido criticadas tambien. Probablemente, ya es hora de hacer un cambio. El Sr. Beinfest tiene que estar bien familiarizado con la frase en ingles, “throwing someone under a bus” (tirar a alguien debajo de la guagua). Eso fue lo que Beinfest le hizo tanto a Fredi Gonzalez y a Edwin Rodriguez. Ahora le toca a el. El nombre que mas se oye para reemplazar a Beinfest y a Hill es el de Dan Jennings, una persona muy capacitada y muy respetado en el beisbol, que ha estado haciendo todo lo posible por reestablecer el sistema de ligas menores de los Peces.
Tambien se esta reportando que Mike Lowell esta siendo considerado para reemplazar a Guillen. Traer a Mike seria una tremenda decision, pero yo preferiria ver a Lowell conseguir por lo menos un año de experiencia, ya sea en AAA o AA como manager o como coach con los Marlins.
Que haria yo si la decision fuera mia? Aunque Ozzie Guillen no es necesariamente santo de mi devocion, pienso que el merece quedarse como manager. Me gustaria verlo manichar sin una nube negra sobre su cabeza, y con un roster saludable. Eso le daria el tiempo necesario a Lowell. Otra cosita: tanto el Sr. Loria como el Sr. Samson deben de mantenerse fuera de lo que son decisiones de beisbol del equipo. Tienen que dejar al gerente general hacer su trabajo, y el gerente general tiene que dejar que el manager haga su trabajo.
En el football universitario esta semana, las dos universidades locales estaran en accion mañana sabado. Los Huracanes de la Universidad de Miami viajan a Atlanta para enfrentarse a Georgia Tech a las 3:00 pm. Georgia Tech es favorito por 14 puntos. Ni Las Vegas respeta a los Huracanes. Mientras tanto, los Panthers de FIU reciben la visita de los Louisville Cardinals, que entran al juego ranqueados numero 20 en la nacion. Louisville es favorito sobre FIU por 13 1/2.
