The Marlins blew a 3-0 in the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves last night, and had  to go to extra innings.  Closer Steve Chisek did his best Heath Bell imitation and gave up the three runs, the first on a Dan Uggla run-scoring single and a two-run double by Brian McCann.  This season, the Fish have done their best work in extra inning games, and in the 10th, Jose Reyes hit a bloop single to drive in Rob Brantly, who walked and went to second when Gorkys Hernandez was hit with a pitch.  Marlins win, 4-3.  The Marlins are now 11-5 in extra inning games this season.  These two teams close out their three game series tonight.  Josh Johnson will take on Kris Medlen, first pitch at 7:10 pm.  The Marlins will be honoring Chipper Jones in what will be his last appearance at Marlins Park after his hall-of-fame career tonight, so you may want to get there early.  Marlins management obviously learned their lesson after ignoring Bobby Cox’ retirement a couple of years ago.  Reviewing yesterday’s action in the majors, first in the National League,

Last night’s game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees was postponed and the game will be made up today at 1:05 pm as part of a day-night doubleheader.  The second game will begin at the originally scheduled time at 7:05 pm.

I speculated yesterday about the post season awards in the National League.  Today, belongs to the American League.  In the MVP race, nobody has meant more to his team than rookie outfielder Mike Trout of the Angels.  Trout wasn’t called up from the minors until the end of April, and since being inserted in the Angels lineup, this 21-year old has been nothing less that spectacular.  In 125 games this season, Trout is hitting .327, with 118 runs, 46 stolen bases, 27 homers and 77 RBI, while usually hitting in the leadoff spot.  Defensively, he is an ESPN top play highlight almost every day.  He is a shoe-in for rookie of the year, and I have insisted all season he is a true candidate for MVP as well.  Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers has other ideas, and is on the threshold of a magical season, whether or not the Tigers advance to the playoffs.  Miguel is poised to become the first triple crown winner in the major leagues since Carl Yastrzemski led the AL with a .326 average, 44 HR’s, and 121 RBI.  Cabrera leads the American League with a .333 average, is second in homers with 40 (2 behind Josh Hamilton), and leads the league with 129 RBI.  It just doesn’t get any better than that, especially in a season where Cabrera was asked to move to third base to accommodate Prince Fielder.  THe race for the AL Cy Young award should go down to David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays,  Jered Weaver of the Angels, and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox.  Matt Harrison of Texas, Justin Verlander of the Tigers, and Felix Hernandez of Seattle will get some votes, but Price will probably get it.  Manager of the year in the AL is done already, with Buck Showalter taking it, with some competition from Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox.  Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin will also get some votes.

In college football this week, the local universities are both in action again this saturday.  The Hurricanes travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in a 3:00 pm game. THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Carl Yastrzemski was the last triple crown winner in the American League in 1967.  Who was the last national league player to lead the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in?  Bonus question: Two players won the triple crown twice.  Who were they?  Joe Medwick of the St. Louis Cardinals led the NL with a .374 batting average, 31 home runs, and 154 RBI in 1937.  The only two players to win the triple crown twice were Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox in 1942 and 1947 and Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1922 and 1925.  The most incredible thing about Williams is that he missed three seasons, from 1943 to 1945 between triple crown seasons, while serving in the military in WWII.

Ayer, estuve especulando sobre los premios de final de temporada en la liga nacioanal.  Hoy le toca a la liga americana.  En la carrera para jugador mas valioso, nadie ha significado mas a su equipo que el jardinero novato de los Angelinos, Mike Trout.  Trout no llego al equipo de grandes ligas hasta los ultimos dias de abril, y desde que fue incorporado a la alineacion de los Angelinos, el novato de 21 años de edad ha sido espectacular.  En 125 juegos esta temporada, Trout esta bateando .32y7, con 118 carreras anotadas, 46 bases robadas, 27 jonrones, y 77 RBI, bateando casi exclusivamente como primer bate.  Defensivamente, da la impresion que lo vemos todos los dias en una jugada espectacular en ESPN.  Se va a llevar el premio de novato del año indiscutiblemente, y yo les he estado diciendo la temporada completa que es un candidato legitimo para el JMV de la liga.  Miguel Cabrera de los Tigres de Detroit tiene otras ideas, y el ex-Marlin esta a punto de completar una campaña de triple corona, la primera desde el año 1967, cuando Carl Yastrzemski fue el lider en las tres categorias ofensivas en la liga americana con un promedio de bateo de .326 average, 44 HR’s, y 121 RBI.  En este momento, Cabrera es el lider en la liga americana con un promedio de .333 average, esta en segundo lugar en jonrones en la liga con 40 (2 detras de Josh Hamilton), and es el lider en la liga con 129 RBI.  Todo esto en una temporada en la que los Tigres movieron a Cabrera a la tercera base para acomodar la presencia de Prince Fielder.  La carrera para el premio Cy Young award debe de ser entre David Price de los Tampa Bay Rays,  Jered Weaver de los Angelinos, y Chris Sale de las MEdias Blancas de Chicago.  Matt Harrison de Texas, Justin Verlander de los Tigres, y Felix Hernandez de Seattle tambien van a recibir votos, pero creo que Price se lo lleva.  El trofeo de manager del año ya lo mandaron a imprimir con el nombre de Buck Showalter de los Orioles.  Buena competencia este año de Robin Ventura de las Medias Blancas y Bob Melvin de los Atleticos.
