Freddie Freeman provided the magic last night, a two-run game winning homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves clinched a playoff spot, beating the Marlins 4-3. Chipper Jones led off the ninth with a double against Mike Dunn, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on the Freeman blast. A wasted effort for the Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi, who allowed only two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out eight. Donovan Solano homered twice for the Fish, his first two major league home runs. This guy better have a spot with the Marlins next year. Kris Medlen started for the Braves and did not factor in the decision, but the Braves won their 22nd straight game started by Medlen. That is the longest such streak in the major leagues since Yankees won 22 consecutive games started by Whitey Ford in 1950 and 1953. (Ford was serving in the Korean War in ’51 and ’52.) Congratulations and my best wishes go out to Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez. Tonight, these two teams meet again as Josh Johnson takes the hill for the Fish against Paul Maholm.
The Braves find themselves now only four games behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East. The other division races are settled, and the only playoff slot still in doubt is the second wild card participant. St. Louis holds a 4 1/2 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and 5 1/2 over Philadelphia and Arizona. Over in the American League, things tightened up in the AL Central and the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox are tied for the lead in the division. Texas leads the Oakland A’s by 4 games in the west, and the Yankees still lead the AL East by 1 1/2 games over the Orioles. The AL wild card standings show Baltimore ahead of Oakland by half a game, the Angels are two games behind the A’s, and Tampa Bay is 3 games behind Oakland. Promises to be an exciting finish to the season.

The backlash from the Monday Night fiasco continues as the NFL keeps trying to sweep the situation under the rug. The league needs to get the real officials back on the field as quickly as possible. Commissioner Roger Goodell needs to understand and accept the reality that the integrity of the game is in question.
The games go on, and this coming Sunday, the Miami Dolphins travel to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Cardinals, one of three remaining unbeaten teams in the league. Game time is 4:00 pm, and the game will be televised by CBS, Channel 4 in Miami.

La reaccion en el mundo del football de la NFL sigue siendo bastante negativa contra la liga y la situacion que se han buscado con los referees y el paro laboral. La liga sigue tratando de tapar el sol con un dedo despues del fiasco del juego del lunes. La NFL tiene que hacer lo necesario para que los arbitros regulares regresen al terreno. El comisionado de la liga, Roger Goodell, tiene que entender y aceptar la realidad de que la integridad del deporte esta en peligro.
Asi y todo, los juegos continuan, y este domingo, los Miami Dolphins estaran en Phoenix para enfrentarse a los Arizona Cardinals, uno de tres equipos invictos que quedan en la liga. El juego arranca a las cuatro de la tarde, hora de Miami, y sera televisado por CBS, el canal 4 en Miami.
