After the 14-inning marathon the on Monday night, and knowing they have a game at 12:30 today, both the Marlins and the Braves needed a strong performance from their starting pitcher yesterday to let their respective bullpens recover a bit. Atlanta’s rookie pitcher, Julio Teheran, gave them just what they needed, pitching into the eighth inning, leading the Braves to a 6-4 win over the Fish. Justin Upton doubled twice and homered while BJ Upton got two hits and drove in a run to lead the Braves. Rob Brantly had a three-run homer for the Marlins in the loss. The Braves look for the sweep today, with a matinee starting at 12:40 pm. The Marlins will start Justin Turner, while Atlanta will counter with lefty Paul Maholm on the hill. The Fish will enjoy a day off tomorrow, while Atlanta will be in Cincinnati to take on the Reds in a four-game series before the All-Star break. Today’s contestant in the play of the year category comes from Marlins Park and Marlins’ third baseman Ed Lucas:
The Marlins’ Mike Stanton was not selected to participate in this year’s All Star Game and was also not chosen to take part in the Home Run Derby. Here is the story from Marlins.com’s Joe Frisaro:
TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Yoenis Cespedes was selected yesterday by AL team captain Robinson Cano as the American League’s final participant in the Home Run Derby. Cespedes is only the fourth player selected to participate in the Derby while not being chosen to play in the All-Star game. Who were the other three? Tell you later, alligator.
In a sad story, the bat-retrieving dog for the AA Trenton Thunder died at the age of 13:
It could get ugly. Fox Sports is reporting that up to 20 players, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, will be suspended after the All-Star break in connection to the ongoing investigation into the Miami-based Biogenesis Clinic, which allegedly provided PED’s to a number of players.
We need to remember and consider that MLB would be suspending these players using documents and testimony, as opposed to positive tests. Jon Paul Morosi talks about the potential disaster this could cause in the game:
Here are the up-to-the-minute standings in MLB:
Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:
In NBA news, all signs are pointing to the Birdman returning to the Miami Heat:

Henry Abbott of ESPN.com isn’t sure as to what the Howard signing will bring to Houston:
Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports talks about the fraud named Jay-Z:
Personal note: JayZ is a total nincompoop, as well as a low-life. He’s the knuckle-dragging, ignorant, scum-sucking weasel that just recently went to Cuba on vacation with his wife, Beyonce, who is obviously as dumb and stupid as she is beautiful.
In NFL news, Aaron Hernandez is still in jail, where he belongs.
More from the NFL. In case you missed it, if I was a betting man and was in Las Vegas, I would bet on the over for the number of wins for the Dolphins this season (7.5). Here is the complete Las Vegas list for predicted number of wins:
