TODAY'S BLOG - Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

Ryan Braun was the first casualty of the Biogenesis investigation yesterday.  The former National League MVP and former Cane was suspended by MLB for the remainder of the season and any postseason games this year.  He will not appeal.  Here is the story from ESPN:

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick filed this report:

Jon Morosi of Fox Sports has no love at all for Braun:

Buster Olney of ESPN calls Braun the “Lance Armstrong” of baseball:

Tim Brown of Yahoo!Sports looks at what the Braun suspension means for Alex Rodriguez and others mentioned in the Biogenesis investigation:

More suspensions to come, especially if the players are smart.  A 60 game or so suspension this season is better than 100-150 games next year if they appeal.  The players union has already stated that they will not defend the cheaters if MLB’s evidence is strong.  Also look for the teams in contention to make deals to protect themselves against those possible suspensions.

Jim Bowden of ESPN talks about just that:

Back to baseball on the field.  The Marlins wasted no time last night to end their embarrassing scoreless innings streak.  The Fish scored two first-inning runs and went on to beat the Rockies 3-1.  Giancarlo Stanton drove in the first run with a double, scoring Ed Lucas.  Placido Polanco drove home Stanton with a sacrifice fly, and Lucas later homered to account for the third Marlins run.  Tom Koehler took advantage of the offensive explosion last night, giving up only a Troy Tulowitzki home run in his seven innings of work.  Koehler scattered eight hits, struck out seven, and didn’t walk anyone. Game two of the four game series with the Rockies is tonight.  Jhoulys Chacin will start for the Rockies, while Jose Fernandez takes the hill for the Fish.  Game time is at 8:40 pm, Miami time.  The expected pitching matchups for the rest of the series with the Rockies:

WEDNESDAY Jacob Turner vs Jorge de la Rosa 8:40 pm
THURSDAY Nathan Eovaldi vs Juan Nicasio 3:10 pm

The Marlins return home for a Friday night encounter with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first of ten consecutive games at Marlins Park.

After last night’s win, the Marlins optioned infielder Derek Dietrich and outfielder Marcell Ozuna to AA-Jacksonville and they are bringing up outfielders Jake Marisnick and Christian Yelich.  Marisnick is batting .294 with 12 homers and 46 RBI, while Yelich is hitting .280 with 9 home runs and 33 RBI.  Both Ozuna and Dietrich had been struggling offensively.  Ozuna had only 3 hits in his last 38 at bats, while Dietrich was 2 for his last 15.  The Marlins want them to get some work at the minor league level to get back to where they were.  Like I’ve always said, the place to learn and develop is NOT on the major league roster.  This is what happens when you bring up guys too early.

Here’s Juan Rodriguez’ article in the Sun Sentinel on the call-up of Marisnick and Yelich.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Cubs 4 Diamondbacks 2

Josh Reddick’s two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the A’s to the win, their twelfth straight win over the Astros.
